Looking for a couple of specific map types, help appreciated
Hello, was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.
I am looking for a couple of maps for single player use to practice with a couple of towns I dont know well. Specifially, I need a map which can be played with the original game (NO expansions), which is Medium or maybe Large (perhaps one of both), and I would really really really like a map which doesnt have lots of neutral town castles around which one could take -- I mean that I want to practice with MY starting town and perhaps any towns of enemies I capture, but not lots of freebies.
Anyone have some tips for me? THank you!

I´m not sure about maps for version 1.4 (Restoration of Erathia), but if u take a look on the sticky thread here in the maphaven forum called "Where to find good custom singleplayer maps..", u will find some nice threads about any kind of maps.
Try to get Heroes Complete (4.0) or at least Shadow of Death (3.2), so u will be able to play much more maps.
Most of the maps i played are XL maps with underground and take a long time to finish. But in all these maps, u prolly play only one town type and have to face all other town types one after the other. This way, u learn to fight with your starting town against all other town types.
The 3 maps i could recommend are:
1. Unleashing the bloodthirsty
--> You play with stronghold / fortress army mostly. First u face fortress opponent, then Tower, then Rampart, Inferno, Castle, Necro and finally Dungeon.
2. To Kill for Power
--> You play Inferno army (with support of some Titans later) and have to face all other kind of town types.
3. The Empire of the World II
--> You play Castle army the whole game (some golddragons support u later though...)

Hm thanks.
Yes, I only have 1.4 (Erathria). I DID check out that sticky before posting, but wasnt able to find quite what I was looking for.
My problem is, that when I face these other town types and beat them, I get their castle -- so that then I can make their troops too. Thats why I was asking about smallerish maps with only a few towns on them.
However, thank you, I will continue my search there!

The troops in the town u capture won´t help ya that much. At the time u will conquer them, your army is that huge, these weekly production of other towns won´t replace the stacks u have on your main. You normaly stick to your "home" army the whole game.

To me, The Lord of War is a classic, along with Sanders Folly. A few new classics for me would be Ad Hominen and Fallen Stars and Eight Player Cutthroat. The three maps I mentioned here are some of my favorites to play.

Hello, thanks!
It looks like Sanders Folly requires ArmBlade (not Erathia -- I only have Erathia currently, so any maps requiring an expansion are out for me); I searched here at MapHaven but there were no entries for Lord of War or Ad Hominem. Thanks for the suggestions, however.

Why don't you play only with your main town and just put other towns' creatures in their garisson? This way, all towns are protected and you play with your town. (To learn how to play, you should complete Chronicles.)
