A couple of questions, because im completely and utterly new to HOMM3
1. Are there replays/videos/written recollections of good players playing 1v1s ? Where can I find them?
2. Is there some sort of definately guide for new players who are COMPLETELY lost?
3. What are the popular maps for 1v1s, so I can practice? Where can I find them?
thanks in advance

Make a post in Volcanic Wastelands called "Brag about your games" and you'll get plenty.

Yes, more of a training map, actually. Go to http://wizardsandwarriors.net/trainingmaps.htm and download Heroes3 Basic Training Map. It should give you a basic idea of what it's all about.
Once you've finished it, you can find a lot of strategy info in Library of Enlightenment, especially HOMM3 tactics thread, special buildings threads (Crypts, Medusa Stores, etc).
Here is a very basic summary of how you should play:
1) Might heroes are usually better than magic, so select one of might ones (Crag Hack, Tazar, Ivor, Mephala, Gunnar, Neela, etc).
2) Hire 2 heroes with troops from the tavern and combine them with your starting hero's troops. That should give you a good starting army. Also, it is usually a good idea to hire AT LEAST a 4-th hero from the tavern on week 1 to explore, etc. Hire 1 more native hero for his troops each week after the 1-st week.
3) Fight with your "main" hero, collect stuff with your other "scout" heroes. Also, use your scouts to transfer army from your castle to your main hero.
4) Always choose gold from the chests.
5) On week 1 try to build the highest possible creature dwelling + castle. Don't worry about building gold buildings on week 1 - you should get plenty from fighting.
I could add more, but I think those are enough for the first few online game to avoid overloading you.

Go to Zone and play. I think it is one of the multiplayer options. It will bring you to the Zone website.
