Multiple Upgrade Options
I know this has been discussed before, but i think i have a good new idea how creatures could be upgraded where little work would have to be done to animations and things to the game. Just a simple colour change method could be used for creatures.
You could have the option to upgrade crature groups, without upgrading the dwelling would be a good idea cause i think upgrade places are a bad idea. But the cost could be very costly. You could upgrade a certain creature up to like 5 time would be really cool. For example:-
Dwarves:
16 HP
3-4 Damage
3 Haste
14 Movement
0 Spell Points
0 Shots (this is for shooters)
50% Magic Resistance
COST LETS SAY - 100 GOLD.
Armed Dwarves:
20 HP
3-4 Damage
4 Haste
14 Movement
0 Spell Points
0 Shots (this is for shooters)
60% Magic Resistance
UPGRADE COST FOR DWARVES TO ARMED DRARVES - 50 GOLD
Battle Dwarves:
24 HP
3-5 Damage
5 Haste
15 Movement
0 Spell Points
0 Shots (this is for shooters)
70% Magic Resistance
UPGRADE COST FOR ARMED DWARVES TO BATTLE DWARVES - 60 GOLD
Master Dwarves:
28 HP
4-6 Damage
6 Haste
16 Movement
0 Spell Points
0 Shots (this is for shooters)
80% Magic Resistance
UPGRADE COST FOR BATTLE DWARVES TO MASTER DWARVES - 70 GOLD
Golden Dwarves:
32 HP
5-7 Damage
7 Haste
18 Movement
0 Spell Points
0 Shots (this is for shooters)
90% Magic Resistance
UPGRADE COST FOR MASTER DWARVES TO GOLDEN DWARVES - 80 GOLD
-----------
Changing the Dwarves apperance using colours can be easily done. Or simply add small bits to the creatures like helmets or better looking swords. Also the creatures could only be upgraded at their respective castle, or possibly even an external dwelling of that type.
Due to the fact that upgrading would be very costly you could say only maintain one or 2 upgraded groups depending on how wealthy you are. Maybe you have like a army of Battle Dwarves and everything else is kept normal, due to the fact that it would be too costly to do so otherwise.
I think upgrading should be a luxury for those players who want to push their creatures to be a little better providing they can afford it.
I think this would be a real cool way of upgrading creatures in HOMM 4.

Good thinking, BlueGreen.
Your idea is great, although it's not a totally new one. Multiple upgrades were a wonderful feature in "Disciples - the Sacred lands".
As an improvement to your idea, we could have 2 or more upgrade paths. For example we could choose between upgradin dwarves into Battle Dwarves or, let's say, Dwarven Clerics. Maybe dwarves don't make the best example, but elves could be up-graded into Grand Elves, Elf Assasins or Elf Scouts (more movement - last time I read a H4 preview they said troops would be able to move on their own on the adventure map).
Anyway, the poin is it would be great to have multiple upgrades in Heroes4.

Golden Dwarves? I think it is a good idea, even though I'm glad upgrades disappear from Heroes IV. Managing two levels of the same creatures was sometimes tedious, and made me wish sometimes I did not upgrade at all.

Ok thanx for the feedback guys and I still think it would be a cool idea in the way that I suggested. Perhaps maybe like one of u said to have different upgrade options. So you can choose 2 different upgrades and maybe another upgrade on top of that.
I still think it should be kept simple though, without having to upgrade the dwellings and things and you simply have the option available if you have the extra cash. The creatures would stil have to be bought normally, but could then be upgraded for a price!

I agree with angelspit on this one. While multiple upgrades can be really cool, and works quite well in games like Disciples, it was annoying enough just having 2 levels of upgrade in H3. Nothing worse then say having skeleton warriors in your party and then not being able to take on a new group of skeletons because they are a slightly different type of troop and don't mix with your original troop. now imagine how annoying that would be if there were 5 levels of the same creature.
Disciples doesn't run into this problem because you don't have creature stacks and so every creature is individual.

The idea isn't bad . . . it just needs to be refined.
How about instead of paying for the upgrades, you give the creatures levels? After so many battles, the Dwarves become battle dwarves and can do +5 damage and +5 HP. Something simple, but worth having. If the stacks are combined with another, the XP is evened out. The higher the creature, the more XP it takes.
Who wouldn't enjoy taking on a level 5 Fierce Black Dragon?

How about instead of buying upgrades you have to earn them in the feild to reflect experience without actually having experience points.
Lvl 1 Recruits
Lvl 2 Blooded
Lvl 3 Regular Army
Lvl 4 Experienced
Lvl 5 Veteran
Lvl 6 Battle Hardened
Lvl 7 Warriors
Lvl 8 Veteran Warriors
Lvl 9 Master Warriors
Lvl 10 Survivors
Lvl 11 Psycho guy that sits in the corner
Lvl 12 Isn't my hitch up yet?
Lvl 13 I'm gonna frag that guy if he makes us fight again
Lvl 14 Enough already I'm outta here
Lvl 15 Please, I wanna go home
Lvl 16 I'm begging you here
Lvl 17 Very quiet and looking at people funny
Lvl 18 Laughs uncontrollably
Lvl 19 Gazebo Slayer
Lvl 20 Kamikazi
Each level you would get 1 additional stat bonus ie. attack /defence /hp /damage/ movement/ haste. If you add new troops to the stack, the stack loses one experience level.

I like the idea of units "auto-upgrading" as they gain experience. This makes a lot of sense, and it wouldn't be excessively complicated to do either. When two stacks are combined, just average out the experience - example: add 20 new dwarves (0 xp) to a stack of 100 veteran dwarves (let's say 6000 xp) and you get 120 with 5000 xp. It's not entirely realistic, but it's a lot less complicated that way.
P.S. If anyone else has this avatar already, I'll change it. I've noticed a few people seem to be really touchy about their avatars.

Exellent Ideas Everyone!
These ideas are great! If 3DO reads this thread (And a lot of others) they might see what is wrong, what should be changed, and what can stay the same. BlueGreen and OldTimer's ideas are my favourites, monsters gaining levels would be cool.

This kind of upgrade system are usually used by RTS games. In Re Alert 2, experienced units will have different attacks and they will have a nifty medal icon on their image. We don't need to change the colour of the units, just add a medal icon beside them and that'll do.

I thought I brought up the level thing. Oh well, my fragile ego will survive. I guess once you start offing a few gazebos, everyone looks up to you!
You can e-mail this thread to 3do. They claim to read everyone (you will get a reply) and tell them to the design team (yeah, right). It's worth a try. I e-mailed an idea about being able to place gravestones on the make-a-map, and they claimed it was a great idea. Anyway, here is there e-mail address:

Paul please don't change your posts on my account. You'll find that I have very thick skin, and do not anger quickly. We are talking about a game after all. If anyone posts something that may seem confrontational I'll just argue with them in a humorous manner, and hopefully we'll have fun with it. If they don't have a sense of humor, I guess they will just be PO'd at me, either way it doesn't really matter.
(and I don't expect people to read every thread from weeks and months ago to find out where ideas come from. It is entirely possible for two people come up with similiar ideas independantly.)
Have fun. Post more.

I don't really like the idea of upgrading your creature 5 times to get a better one. If you have 5 upgrades, in 4 levels and 8 creatures, it is going to get a bit much, and will be focused on getting one type of upgrade.
I think the creatures would be too redundant, and you would pay like 1000 dollars for a structure upgrade.
You can't say i'm for the idea.

As I see it the upgrading should be in an outer building so you don't pay for structure, but just for upgrading.
On the other side I really think that the growing-with-the-XP idea is better.

Exactly, Slav! It would be a gradual process, and it wouldn't be a huge bonus. Same pic (or maybe a new hat or something), a small bonus per level (like +1 Damage), and it wouldn't really effect gameplay. It would be like a small bonus that will lean the fight towards you.
