2006 winter olympics - opening ceremony

Just watched the opening ceremony of the 2006 winter olympics live from Torino Italy, it started kinda slow but slowly evolved into an awesome event that was worth watching.

I especialy liked the Ferrari Formula 1 car showing off on the slippery ice (was a bit hard to see with all the steam going up from the tyre heat).

And what an original idea with lighting the olympic flame! I thought to myself what is this construction supposed to be? But when the chain of fire spread all around the stadium and ended up 30 feet high I was speechless...

All and all a nice ceremony now the real deal is up, I personaly am waiting for the hockey games, GO RUSSIA!!!

I don't think I've seen any opening ceremonies since I saw a parody of the 1994 Lillehammer opening. Nothing can ever compare to that: Drunk vikings going off at wild rampages; killing royalty, robbing IOC officials, and generally spreading havoc.

I don't get to see much of the games because in Australia it is shown at night.

As for me it isn't really a big deal, because Australia hardly ever gets gold medals.

Don't you have any family roots to other countries?
I live in Israel and its delegation to the olympics consists of 4 figure skaters who got not even a tiny chance in getting a gold medal, probably cause of the lack of snow... There is no snow, EVER, EVER EVER...
So cause all my family is from russia and I was born there I will cheer for them.

Anyway medal updates :
Country      Total      Gold     Silver    Bronze
Norway         5          0         3         2
USA            3          2         1         0
Germany        2          2         0         0
Russia         2          1         0         1
France         2          1         0         1

Russia has got to do some homework, way to go Germany! And the dissapointment is definately Sweden with one of the biggest delegations still with no medals...

According to february 13
Top 5 medal holders
Country----Total----Gold----Silver----Bronze
Norway-------8--------1-------3----------4
USA----------5--------3-------2----------0
Russia-------5--------2-------2----------1
Germany------3--------2-------0----------1
Netherlands--3--------1-------2----------0

I don't think they should arrange those by the number of medals though. Are they saying that the athletes in a country with 10 gold medals are weaker than those living in a country with 11 bronze medals???
I think they should arrange this by the number of gold medals.

The official rankings care about the golds first.
On these lists, USA is in first place, followed by Russia and then Germany.

Yep. But I'm not so sure how good that is, either. In Salt Lake City, Norway won the most gold medals (16 or 12, I think), but we only won like 3 or 4 each silver and gold, but I still see Norwegian media presenting this as if we "won" the Olympics. Even though Germany had only one less gold than us, but 16 silver or something...

Oh well, the important thing isn't who's winning, but ... er... how did that go again?

Russia first and second at womens biathlon! Hurray!

Russia got first and second places at todays womens biathlon competition, which means 2 more medals to wrap home! God Job Ladies!!!

As it was recommended gold medals will decide the standings (not just becuase I want to post Russia at first place, that can't be it ).
Country----Gold----Silver----Bronze----Total
Usa----------4-------2----------0--------6
Russia-------3-------3----------2--------8
Germany------3-------0----------1--------4
Norway-------1-------5----------5-------11
Netherlands--1-------2----------0--------3

Hmmm... Now it just looks stupid, Germany is placed above Norway when there are 7 medals between them???
Something is wrong in your planning Angelito.
Just because Norway are serial loosers they still deserve at least the second spot.

Well the time has come for hockey action yeah!
I watched Canada and Sweden crushing their oppositions both 7-2 talk about lots of action. The medals will be fought between Canada, Sweden, Russia and USA but it is just 3 medals out of... a lot...
So almost at half of the competition the standigs are:

Country----Total----Gold----Silver----Bronze
Norway------11--------1-------5----------5
Russia-------9--------4-------3----------2
USA----------8--------5-------2----------1
Germany------8--------4-------2----------2
Austria------5--------2-------2----------1

Norway is stuck with 11 from yesterday so a little push from Russia or some loke to USA can cost them the first spot.

Congrats on team Sweden beating Team USA for women's hockey.

I'm not happy about team USA loosing, I'm just happy that Europe is getting better at hockey.

And congrats to team Suisse and team Finland men's hockey. They kicked Canada's behind. Good lesson to us.

It's sad to see Norway still doesn't have a team...

Canada men's haven't scored in 6 periods now. I think everyone in Canada is asking themselves what is going on.

Hey, we have a team! It's just that it's barely good enough for the  second rate world cup.

Speaking of women's hockey, I saw Canada destroy Finland yesterday, or something. That was some serious superiority.

And speaking of superiority (), did any of you see Norway fight their way to a win against Germany in tonight's curling match? That was some of the best curling I have seen in a long, long time. And to imagine that the Germans are out of the tournament! They were by far the best team I've seen so far....

Oh well. Another gold medal to Norway yesterday; the nearly 40 year old Kjetil André Aamodt won the Super G! That's quite an achievment, especially as he has been among the best alpine skiers for the last 15 years. I mean, it's his fifth Olympic gold medal! Respect!

The Olympic Games:

Every two years we are blessed with a bunch of athletes competing in a super orgy for little medallions. I have no real problem with this "GO USA"! What REALLY grinds my gears is the freaking melodramatic bullcrap coverage and sponsorship of these larger than life, oh-my-god I just pissed my pants, games and athletes.

Beef Number 1:

For every freaking event, there is a USA team "star athlete". This is the person who is sexy enough to warrant a camera on their glowing hypocritical face at every feasible opportunity. We, the viewers at home, are taken away from actual footage of the games (you know footage that doesn't involve any American teams) so we can see some sob story, scripted out refuse about what it took THIS particular athlete to make it to the Olympics. Never mind the thousands of other hard working athletes, we want to be able to brainwash people into thinking this person is important enough to watch on all the after game specials during daytime TV. Eat your wheaties kids because this glamour athlete we care nothing about, and will never speak of again in our lives, says you should. All of these interviews are the same: "[Insert name here] has been training since [he/she] was 7 years old"! . "[close relative] got cancer when [he/she] was 12"! "When [he/she] was 15. [his/her] dog became sideway soup when a speeding driver liquefied the creature!" .

You get the idea. Honestly, I don't give a crap about your past. You're in the Olympics, we know you're probably a really good athlete. NO INTERVIEW NECESSARY! No one gives a crap how long you had to train for this. Its expected that you were probably squirted out of your mother's womb wearing a pair of skis, holding a javelin, or endorsing a NIKE ad. Get over yourself about the hardships of training, idiot. Also, when the hell did personal drama become an Olympic event. I swear athletes compete over who had the worst childhood. Call me cruel, but I don't think your little sister with asthma or your alcoholic father has anything to do with how fast you can run, or how high you can jump. So check your bags at the door, and be thankful you're in the most competitive sports event ever.

Beef Number 2:

Sometime ago, it became a standard to refer to these athletes as heroes.

Hero. n. A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.

I suppose the new cross country skiing event is pretty life threatening, but still I'm not so convinced that these guys are heroes. Lets forget about the people everyday who actually help save peoples lives, or do self-less acts of goodwill to further humanity. They're not marketable. Lets get the worlds largest population of jocks (and jockettes) and credit them with a term more suitable for a sanitation worker. We've all seen these ads that further this notion: "They left home, normal people they came back heroes!" BULLCRAP ALERT!!! I wish this same principal applied to other events.

"Kevin Knutson went to Pizza Hut, a normal person... he came back...God!"

This year takes great exception to the pseudo-standard. Anyone seen the latest ads? A bunch of booger-nosed little brats pose the voiced over question "What makes a SUPER-hero?" Apparently, being heroes isn't enough for America anymore. Now our athletes must be supersnowingheroes. Now, don't get me wrong. These athletes are great. They are amazing at what they do. Truly the world's best athle---blah blah blah wank wank and all that stuff. But SUPERHEROES? Contrary to what the voice acting kids say, being a super hero takes more than "being determined", "being a fast runner", or "wearing McDonalds logos on your outfit". Being a superhero means you can freaking shoot BEAMS out of your eyes, rip elephants in half, maintain double-d sized breasts while having a 6 inch waist, and the like. Superheroes are fictitious beings of comic book jerk-off land. I don't see Superman running hurdles. Wolverine isn't exactly a speed skater. And the Incredible Hulk isn't in the wrestling department (obviously). So screw you little kids. What makes a superhero? Someone who can use their mind to rip off your pre-pubescent testicles and roast them with a fire created in the palm of their hand.

I think I'm done here.

Go USA!

well... did you watch the Canada - Italie 16-0 blowout? Even some Canadians say that went a bit too far...

Anyways, Sweden played well, but in the end it was all Canada in a 4-1 for a gold in women's hockey. (as expected)
