erhm...
not to fan the flames or anything (that would be sooo unlike me) but after reading some of the reactions here, i decided to show this vid to ten people i know, all of different age, beliefs, composure, marital status, etc...
9 out of 10 people laughed at the whole thing with an off comment or two along the lines of "poor kid" ...while still laughing
1 out of 10 ...well, he was scared off the chair... said a few things that would get me banned if i posted and then laughed
10 out of 10 said they would do this to someone else without so much as a second thought... three of them have children of their own and happen to be among the most compassionate people i know (for those familiar with the World of Darkness, think Humanity 8+)
may be a cultural thing after all...
as for their comments on the shocked reactions here... better not go there

It was a great post to begin with, but got some unexplained offensive reaction from some people with issues that now seem very wrong.
The scary part only lasts as for 2 sec (longer if the game played at full volume!) but the funny part lasts longer, gives you a lifetime story to tell your kids and grandkids and of course a new trick to play on your friends. Altough it's not recommended to show them the kid first, by the way you should have gone straight to the second video from the beggining, that would have helped a lot.
Great thread overall, 2 of my friends down 5 more to go!
Should I try this on my mom she is like 56? Or it will go bad?

About the influence of such things on the young mind:
Terminator 2. I'll bet the vast majority of the people who read this have seen this movie. I've seen it too. First time at the age of 4. Does it seem to have affected me in any particular way?
Sure, it is a whole different kind of experience, but based on mine, I expect that the prank shouldn't have any long term influence on him.

Rational Thought: A Higher/Advanced Brain Function
The second video is an excellent comparison. I don't think anyone could have successfully explained the problem without the second video to compare with. It is very clear to me. Look at the second video. See the age difference of the recipient(s). You might also notice that many reactions, whether positive or negative, involved the person/recipient immediately grasping some part of their self to help recognize and rationalize the true reality.
This can be easily understood by anyone with a fully formed brain (ie adult). The younger the person, the less their brain is formed and in turn a much lesser ability to rationalize their fears. All life has a will to live but not all life forms have fear. Fear is a basic function of most living things. Its purpose is usually to make certain the identity of danger to one's self. I would even characterize fear as an "instinct" because it could easily be considered or explained as "the will to live".
As a parent who speaks from the experience of being present during childbirth, I can attest to even the youngest form of person to having fear. A baby cries thusly to communicate with its mother. Take the mother away, even for an instant and only a few feet away (but out of sight), and the newborn will immediately cry in fear of not knowing where its mother is. This is the case even after the baby has been adequately fed and diaper changed.
As we grow in age our brain develops and grows in complexity. There is much we do not know about the human mind, there are however some things we are certain of. Take the age of suffrage for example, that is when we democratic peoples are given the right to vote; to have our say and implement it legally. Why? Why are many people allowed to vote at the age of 18 and not younger? In most countries, which allow an 18-year-old person to vote, there have been scientific studies that clearly show parts of the human brain that haven't yet finished growing. One of the last things to form in a person's brain is their ability to rationalize with a high degree of logic, intuition, education, experience, and respect for any given situation or thought that they may encounter. That is to say a 16-year-old is capable of performing complex tasks and equations while most likely unable to see why he/she performs them. It's been commonly referred to as "seeing around the corner". A 16-year-old is quite capable of holding a gun and firing it with great skill and expertise but he will likely be unable to comprehend his true purpose for holding the weapon; as was the case in many young Nazi conscripts.
Herein lies our debate. We ask ourselves why it's wrong to frighten an innocent young child who is still going through the process of building bridges of trust, safety, and dependence with his parents. This poor child's brain has not finished growing yet. He may not be able to rationalize the reason why he is frightened but can certainly feel it with stunning depth none the less. As we grow up, many of us learn in steps . . . how to deal with fear. For all of us the first step is to depend upon the mother for food, warmth, love, and answers. This is a natural part of growing up. It is the parents' responsibility to help us with each stage of natural growth, both in body and mind. First we learn to crawl, then walk, and then run. First we learn to cry, then mimic voice sounds, and then talk. First we learn to feel love and then express it in return. First we learn to climb, then use a swing, and then drive a car. And the last thing we learn is higher purpose in life; why wars are fought, how to expand upon compassion, and how to eventually become a good teacher so that our own children will learn from our mistakes and successes.
