Heroes 2 was a little easy, mainly becauseit was pretty easy to get high level units like the Titan pretty early and you could wipe out the computer.
The computer doesnt really use high level spells, and if it does, it'll probobly wipe out his army rather than mine/yours.
In Heroes 3 however, the AI has got considerably harder, making more tactical decisions, and better spell casting ie:casting higher level spells, and he moves his troops more tactically rather than in Heroes 2.
In my opinion Heroes 3 has improved on the AI making it more challenging and more fun to play.

Some bad things about Heroes 2 :
1. Unbalanced Towns : Warlock and Wizard rule, followes by Necromancer and Sorceress, then the two weakest town that has no flyers and magic heroes, Knights and Barbarians. If we see a scenario which we can only play with one of two last town, we had already known that we can HARDLY win!
2. Limited artifact load.
3. Not all creatures can be upgraded, and one can be upgraded twice.
4. FEW gold per day.

I agree, your hero was only limited to a certain number of artifacts, which was very poor because if you got the fizbin of misfortune for example, then you were stuck with it, you could trade it to another hero that you own but then that hero would be stuck with the artifact.
I also agree that the Knight and Barbarian towns were the worst, but I do like the Cyclops, one of my fav units in Heroes 2, but there were no flying units and They have weak units.
The weakest is the Peasent which you could hire from the Knight town and I never bought them, they were a big waste of gold, they had very, very little movement and they had a very weak attack skill and defense skill, they were useless.
The Paladin and the Cyclops were probably the weakest level 6 units in the game, but they were i think the cheapest.
The best towns were probably the Wizard and the Warlock as they had the Titan (wizard) and the Black Dragon (warlock) and they were the most powerful units in the game, but they were pretty expensive aswell.
I really like both the games as Heroes 2 had a good story, and good replayability and it was the game that started it all for me. And I like Heroes 3 because it has better graphics, massive replayability, good story, good units, improved artifact load, improved spell casting system and more towns and creatures to buy.
Heroes 3 has added alot of new heroes to hire/buy with each one having their unique skill for example:
Orrin having a 5% increase with the Archery secondary skill.
Those little things are what make the game more exciting and add more depth to it.
It has also intruduced the Ballista and the Tent which can be very usefull in Battles.
There are more spells, more creature with each one having a skill like thing eg:
Medusas have stone gaze, Harpies have Strike and Return.
Just those little things are what make Heroes 3 exciting and enjoyable to pley, and it also adds more depth towards the game.
Also the AI has gotten considerably harder than Heroes 2 and it makes more tactical decisions in Battle by casting spells efficiently and casting high level spells wheras in Heroes 2 it usually casted spells like magic arrow, and usually it casted spells like Armaggedon killing his army rather killing mine. But now it casts Lightning, Chain Lightning, Armaggedon not killing his army, more like killing more of my army.
It also makes good moves, defends it's castle well and other things that I don't need to mention.
Another thing is the transition from 2D to 3D. This dramatically changes the game. In my opinion changes it to the better, because I love looking at the visuals, the different battle landscapes, the creatures everthing.
Also the new town types include:
The Conflux (only in Expansion packs)-
This is a good town type with elementals and the Phoenix which is quite powerful.
This town is not really weak but it is quite strong if you gather your forces and you think carefully about the decisions you make.
Overall a pretty powerful town.
The Inferno-
This is quite a good town type, one of my favs mainly because of the wicked untis the Devils/Arch Devils.
This is an alright strengh army but can be really weak when you start off.
If you gather your resources, and build the required buildings, then this town type can be extremely tough to beat.
The Devils/Archdevils hate the Angels, so the attack will be greater and that can be really useful when in battle against angels.
The Rampart-
A pretty strong town type, mainly because of the Gold Dragons but nothing really special.
One of the special buildings is the Fountain (cant think of name) which increase a random number of resources each week.
Pretty weak to start off with but when you get the Gold dragons then you will become really powerful and hard to beat.
The Tower-
My fav town type, probably because of the Titans.
This is a powerful town and can be really tough to beat, even in the early stages of the game.
The Gremlins are a good unit when used with really high numbers, and the Titans are very strong and tough.
This Town Type has 3 ranged units which is really good, because that buys you some time because the enemy has to move to you, rather than you moving towards it, and if you have the Hero Orrin than you will be incredibly hard to beat.
Really good town type to conquer your enemies with.
Necropolis-
Typically the same as Heroes 2 but with some added creatures and buidlings.
No new units except Dread, death knights, Wights/Wraiths.
I don't really like this town type mainly because it has some weak creatures.
But it can be really tough in the later stages of the game, but by then it could already be to late.
The Castle-
Basically the same as Heroes 2 but with some added creatures and buildings.
One of the hardest towns to beat mainly because of the Angles and their strenght and skills such as: Ressurect dead allies and +1 to morale.
The angels also hate Devils/Arch Devils and their attack increases when battling them.
Good town type, in early and late stages of the game.
The Dungeon-
I don't like this town.
Only good thing in it is the Black Dragons which are immune to all spells and they are really powerful.
I don't really like this town and don't really know much about it typically because I don't really play with them.
Well i think that pretty much sums it up.
So personally I like both of them heaps.
Thanks.

Quote: & I think legendmaker sumed it up in the email, dont you William
Well, I sure thought I did, friend.
But... (sigh)
The thread still spawned some kind of activity. And now that you've mentionned me, well... (sigh) Might as well make my opinion public : Quote: yo, William, nice to meet you
Well, well...
Now is not the right time to start yet another flame war, and since Val isn't exactly in a friendly mood towards us vets today... I will have to pass up posting in your thread just now.
I love all Homm games except the 4th of the series, which has major balance flaws, suffered way too many bugs and was too far removed from the original concept to my tastes.
Homm2 will always remain the best for the backstory and the graphics, in my heart of hearts. I love the Sorceress and she unfortunately didn't survive the second opus. So it's always fun to play a Homm2 once in awhile, for nostalgia purposes.
In any and all other respects, Homm3 is WAY ahead of its ancestor. Tactis wise, the range between the 2 is basically the same as the one between a game "for kids" and the same game but "for adults", honestly.
You didn't even have a "wait" button in combat mode, in Homm2. Not to mention flyers could reach any hex in the battlefield in one single round...
That just can't seriously compare.
Furthermore, I can't possibly recommend you strong enough to try both and see for yourself. Your question do has similarities to the classic "who do you love the most, your daddy or your mommy ?" question !
Kindly. Legend.
Please, to all of you, do NOT expect nor encourage future replies from me in this here thread. I've had my say, here. If you don't agree, ignore it. I WON'T involve in arguments on that topic.
Legendary (sigh).

Yeah i have both games, and i think heroes 3 is a bit better than heroes2 mainly because of all the improvments that it has made, including the 3D graphics which it now has.
Much better game in my opinion and it is more enjoyable to play, but still heroes of might and magic2 is a way easier game to play nad get into, and it isn't as hard as homm3 has become.

hello, long time lurker making first post,
While Heroes 2 was my introduction to the series, and will always have a special place in my heart and i still play it occasionally, Heroes 3 is the game I play much more often, so it seems dishonest for me to suggest it isnt my favourite. Its more of an evolution of H2, and while not every single change was necessarily positive in everyones eyes, the simple fact of more being available, Towns, Heroes, monsters, artefacts, spells means more can be done with the game, with more changes between individual games.
As a big fan of the single player campaigns as well, my multiplayer experience being limited to mostly coop matches with my housemates, Heroes 3, with expansions provides a greater variety of campaigns, and much deeper involvement in the storyline I felt, the Heroes had more individual personality, as well as closer links to the RPG Might and Magic games, which i also enjoy.
What I tend to find when playing H2 again is that ill get annoyed when i try to use a H3 feature and it isnt there.

Yes the first game that I played was HOMM2 the Succesion Wars, then when I got the millenium Heroes edition, then I got to play heroes of might and magic 2 the Price of Loyalty or HOMM2 Gold.
Then I played heroes of might and magic which was also on the homm millenium CD.
Then a couple of weeks ago I got the Heroes of might and magic Complete edition, then about a week or so ago I got the WoG 3.58f mod.
Now when I have played every game except for homm4 and 5, I think that maybe homm2 was easier and had beter music and that homm3 was a little more challenging and it had some great music but not as good as the music on homm2.
I like homm2 because it was the first that I played out of the whole series and it is just fun to play and stuff.
So yeah I think that I may like homm2 better.

are you asking a question or giving an answer, i dont know im tired and confused, well not really tired but eyes hurt
Well heroes of might and magic 2 did have cool looking Castles and cool looking units like the Titans or the Black Dragons.
Now on homm3 the Dragons look similar, they don't really have much difference in look IMO, but the Black Dragon on homm2 looked awesome.

re:
I have played with H1, H2 PoL, H3 (all variations), H4, and -in my dreams- H5 also..
H3 WoG (3.58f) > H3 Complete > H2 PoL > H4 > H1. I may add H5 later on my list.
- H3 WoG: I can write my own Heroes game, so 1st place (after adding my scripts, of course)
- H3 Complete: better gameplay than H2
- H2: I started with this.. 2 years of playing before I received H3
- H4: semi-finished product IMO
- H1: problematic magic system, small battlefield, old graphics
- H5: I would test H5+expansions first..
UPDATE 2007.03.24.: H5 is still semi-finished, between H2 and H4.
Waiting for H5 complete..

Yes I started with homm2 aswell.
I played mayeb for 3 or 4 or maybe 5 years before i got homm millenium edition which came with homm1, homm2 gold, and homm3.
I think thatmaybe homm2 is the best but it is hard to decide because homm2 and homm3 or both excellent games its just hard to decide which is better

Heroes II is the classic for me but i have enjoyed every HoMM game so far. H5 and H4 has many great additions to the series but only H2 and H3 seems like 'flawless' games in the serie.
