HOMM2 town rating- Warlock

I would like to know what you think is the best town type in HOMM2.

Here we go:

The Warlock units are slow and expensive, but they have high hit points and they have good attack and defense skills.
The Warlock is poor in the midgame but are very good at endgame.
They can be good on medium sized maps, but they are much better on Larger maps, as they have more time to develop their might Black Dragons, perhaps the strongest unit in the game.
The Warlocks have only one ranged attacker and that is the Centaurs, being a lev1 unit they are not very strong compared to all the other ranged attackers in the game but oh well they are good none the less.
The Gargoyles are a really strong lev2 unit, they are fast, powerful and can reacht the enemy units in 1 turn.
They are one of the Warlocks most useful creatures.
The Minataur Kings save the Warlock in the midgame as they are powerful and very fast units, and they have high attack and defense skills and they deal good damage.
The Hydra units attack, damages all adjacent units around it, but they are however one of the slowest creatures in the game.
The Black Dragons attack affects 2 hexes, and they are immune to all spells making them very handy in combat, as they can't get blinded or paralyzed by the enemy spells making them very powerful in combat.
The Warlock is a very powerful town to have.
The Warlock town is good in early stages of the game, poor in midgame and very powerful in endgame.
A good town type to have.

Your reviews are good, but I agree Warlock units are very expensive, I was once a warlock in HOMM2 and I needed at least 1 gold mine. Builting a Duneguen is nessarsy { +500 gold}. There are units that are in good speed but Hydras are a fallback in speed. Centuars are best 1lv. shooters compared only to Halflings. Gargolyes are great 2lv flyers. Griffens are ultimate realtion units able to reialate unlimatetely. Minatours,Minatour Kings are greatest units to me, there offensive units and they save the Warlock in the mid-game. Hydras are slow and good garrasion units beause of a mulitlity-headed attack and no reailition. Green Dragons are immune to spells and are great able to kill giants. Red Dragons are Immune to spells and are greater than Green Dragons . Black Dragons are the greatest creature in the game, but are they, Immune to spells and great hits and damage its good.
____________
Yo griffens rule and you know it!

Warlock: My review

Buildings and costs: It's on a "most expensive town" contest with the Wizard, in terms of gold. The only resource that's really needed is sulfur, and some gems for the Minotaurs. Their special building, the Dungeon, helps out for getting the money needed for upgrading and purchasing dragons.

Heroes: Warlocks start with:
Attack: 0
Defense: 0
Power: 3
Knowledge: 2
All Warlocks start with Basic Wisdom and Advanced Scouting. While Advanced Scouting is good at the beginning of the map, its use diminishes later on, as there will eventually be no territory left to explore.
Warlocks start with spell books that have the Curse spell inside. Curse can weaken stronger troops, but seeing as the Warlock is bent on sheer power, I think a more offensive spell would've been more appropriate for them.

Creatures: The Warlock's creatures are strong, but their costs are limiting. You get what you pay for.

Centaur: The only shooter for this town, and their numbers diminish fast because of this. Keep them well guarded. Otherwise, among the best level ones.

Gargoyle: The only very fast creature until the Black Dragon comes into the picture, they're perfect for scouts. Their stats are good too.

Griffin: Unlimited retaliation lets them handle off many intruders, making it good for offensive and defensive situations. Although seeing the town's overall strategy, they're more likely to be used in offensive terms.

Minotaur/Minotaur King: The upgrade makes them fast, and gives them hit points too. Otherwise, they're dandy melee units.

Hydra: Way too slow for the moving army (unless you're tired of getting your Centaurs killed), but perfect for garrisons. They can attack all creatures surrounding them without the risk of counterattacks, and they don't hurt friendly troops either. If a bunch of enemies are surrounding the Hydra when it counters an attack, they all get hurt. If you take them along, try to get haste and teleport.

Green/Red/Black Dragon: Probably the only reason people play as the Warlock. Anyway, they should be fully upgraded as soon as possible, then they reach their legendary status. All of them are immune to magic, fly and have 2-hex ranged attacks (be careful or you might toast your own troops), but the upgrades improve HP, speed, and other stats. Most people pick the Black Dragon over the Titan, but I prefer the Titan. Both of each other hate each other (I've no clue why), and get attack boosts when fighting one another. Once you get the Dragons, it's game over for your enemies.

Strategy: The Warlocks need to survive long enough to get the Dragons, which probably means a tough time getting there, particularly if everyone's against you and the map isn't all that big.

Like I said with the Wizard, the bigger the map, the better for the Warlock, since he'll have time for his dragons to develop.

Warlocks can be tough to play with properly, especially if you blow your funds. But if you play your cards right, you should emerge the victor with your dragons.

Good review, Fofa. A small comment:

I don't think it's true in HoMM2. It is true in HoMM3. The reason (I believe) is due to the developers wanting to immortalize the legendary rivalry between Titans and Black Dragons, as it was in HoMM2. In HoMM3, with more different units, these two are no longer the best (Archangels will eat them alive), but this special behavior is a nice touch.

Angels may not eat them alive in HOMM3.
Their damage that they unleash is 50.
Whereas Titans damage is 40-60 and Dragons is the same I think someone correct me if i'm wrong
The Angels attack and defens skil however is much high than that of the Black Dragons or the Titans.

Now back to the subject.

Centaures are the only ranged attacker for the Warlock, and being a lev1 unit they are not very strong.
They are alright in high numbers but personally I hardly ever use them.

Gargoyles are one of the best lev2 creatures in the game. They are also the most useful Warlock creature.
They can make it to the enemy in one turn and attack them which is really good.
They have good defense and attack skill aswell.

The Griffins are another good unit.
They have unlimited retaliation I think and they are yet again quite strong.
Although they are not the strongest of all the other lev3 units, they have their stong points.
Like the Unlimited reataliations thing, that is a good special skill used during combat, and it can save you at times.

Minatours are a good unit. Very fast and strong units to have within your army.
They have good attack and defense skills and they deal out good damage towards the enemy units.
They are very fast creatures and will be one of the first creatures during battle to make a move.

Hydras are a good, but slow unit.
Their attack affects all adjacent creatures, and if one of your own creatures is adjacent to your hydra when the Hydra attacks, then your unit will not get hurt by the Hydras attack.
Hydras have good attack and defense but they are very slow and can get irratating at times.
The best thing to do to the Hydras is to cast 'Haste' on them and then charge towards the enemy.
Hydras are good but their spped is a big letdown for them.

Black Dragons are perhaps the best creature in the game (Titans are best in my opinion).
Black Dragons are immune to all spells and they are extremely tough to beat in combat.
They are very fast units and will always be one of the first units to move in combat.
You can't cast any spells on the Dragons as mentioned not even spells like 'Bless or haste' for example.
That can be good in some ways and bad in other ways, as you can't enhance the attack or defense skill of the Dragons when you really need them to be higher.
The Black Dragons and the Titans are probably enemies so when you fight Titans you will have a challenge on your hands.

The Warlock buildings cost alot to buy.
Fortunately you can build Statue which adds 250 gold per day, and Dungeon which gives you 500 gold per day.
That can be alot of help during the later stages of the game, but still the buildings cost alot, and you need to buy 2 upgrades of the Towers, you need the Green Tower, then you need to buy the Red Tower and finally the Black Tower to get the Black Dragons, which is a big waste of time and money in my opinion.

The Strategy with this town, is to have plenty of Sulfur as you will need this for your Dragons.
You will probably want to find some Gold mines aswell as some of the buildings cost alot and you will want as much gold as you can get, and so you can build your Dragons.
You should keep the Centaure out of your army IMHO as they are weak. They are a ranged attacker but the Gargoyles are better than them, and their are more powerful units that can be in your army.
The Centaurs do have good growth rates but they are lev1 and are weak, and I don't really bother with them unless I am desperate and need quick reinforcements to defend my Castle or to just stay alive.
You will also need lots of ore, to build most of the towns structures and to build the Black Tower.
You can also get heaps of other resource types and just trade them in for Sulfur or ore, or Gold.
But try to stay alive just long enough for you to unleash your Dragons onto the playing filed.

A powerful town to have.

The Warlock units are slow and expensive.
That is such bulls**t!!! Gargs = very fast, minos = very fast, black dragons = very fast. Griffins, centaurs = average. Only hydras are very slow. Overall it is the 2-nd fastest town after the Sorceress.
Now - price. As a matter of fact, warlock units are THE CHEAPEST units in the game. Their price per hp rate is better than any other town. And the "cheap" knight town is actually one of the most expensive ones (peasants, for example, have the highest gold/hp cost in the game!). But obviously because they got more hp than any other town, they cost more. Using your logic the East-German Trabant is more expensive than Ferrari (when you buy a lot of Trabants and one Ferrari), except that in this case the so-called "cheap" towns also have poor quality units.

For those who say that Warlock is weak in the beginning and that knights or barbarians can kill them early - that's another big toss! Warlock starts with an average speed shooter and a very fast flyer. No other town has that. Compare it to the Knight with his peasants and archers. I mean: if they removed all Upgraded Archery Range requirements, made barbarian's war trolls very fast and easier to build and added a few flyers, I would consider calling them suitable for blitz, but as it stands now they are bad in the beginning, they are bad in the mid-game and they are hopeless in the end-game. Warlock is the only town that can fight shooters with no losses from day 1. Warlock's level 1-5 units are almost as strong (if not stronger) than Knight's level 1-6 production. The warlock is so powerful it doesn't even need its black dragons. The only town that can beat Warlock in the beginning is the Sorceress.

no, sorc and wiz are faster, while barb and knight ties (in terms of # of fast units):

sorc has phoenix (ultra fast), druid, grand elve.

wiz has boar, titan, and arch mage.

barb has wolves and cyclops

knight has champions (ultra fast) and crusaders

to me, the problem with warlock is that the black dragon has no good supporting units.   in a castle assault, they are on their own for a while.   this is because while gargoyles are nice, they are more of a defensive unit (they have higher def than atk rating) used to block shooters.   griffons are crap as well.   both are fodder, and will not stay alive long enough after a few battles to help out the black dragon (in enemy hero fights).  but yes, being able to fight neutral shooters in week 1 with 0 losses is nice.

centaurs also do little to no damage.   its been a while since i played, but don't halflings do WAY more damage (i could be wrong)?    their faster speed is nice, but they are still the crappiest shooter in the game imo - halflings aren't so bad, because the wizard has two other ranged units, but centaur is the only ranged unit, and any other enemy archer unit will slaughter it completely.  after that, you are shooter-less.  the centaurs are only good against neutral mobs but worthless vs enemy heroes.   they wont last more than 2 rounds in combat, especially in castle assaults, because the towers will ALWAYS target them. if memory serves correctly, their neutral map dwellings foce you to pay, while the halfling  neutral map dwellings give you halflings for free.

Okay, maybe phoenixes and champions are the fastest, but they will be pitful against black dragon. Wizard? Wizard has the same amount of v. fast creatures. I'd give it a tie. Barbarian? Only one v. fast creature and that is wolf. Cyclops are only fast. Necro is out with only one v. fast creature. Only sorceress is fastest. Knight and wizard is tie, while barb and necro out.
Strength my friends. Warlock is very powerful. Most of the players don't bother when it comes to money. It is strength of creatures.

What are you talking about Cyclops and other creatures for, This is about Warlock Town not Barbarian or other town types.
The Warlock are quite possibly the strongest town, except maybe the Wizard which has the excellent Titans.
The Centaures are good units, they are ranged which makes them alright, but they are not the best lev1 unit in the game, well at least they are better than those dreaded peasant jeez

The Gargoyles are an excellent lev2 unit and have good attack and defense skill and they have good health.
They are useful and they can reach the enemy units in one turn, because they have good speed.

The Griffins have unlimited retaliations and because of that they are a good unit to have in your army.
They are not the strongest lev3 unit in the game, but because of their special skill they are really useful.

The Minatours are a very fast unit to have in your army.
They hjave good attack and defense skills and they deal out a reasonable amount of damage.
They are strong and you should definately have these units in your army. They also have good speed and that is what makes them very fast units.

The Hydras are a strong but very slow unit to have in your army.
When in battle you should cast haste on them and then charge them towards the enemy units.
They have pretty good attack and defense skill and their attack affects all adjacent enemies.
They are good but are very slow units to have in your army.

The Black Dragons are probably one of the best units in the entire game.
They are fast, immune to all spells and they have pretty good attack and defense skills, but they are only just beaten in attack and defense by the Titans which have an attack and defense skill of 15.
The Black Dragons have the highest damage in the game 25-50 I think and they are really strong customers.
They have the same health as Titans do I think of 300 someone correct me if i'm wrong.
The Black Dragons are immune to all spells and as such you cannot cast haste or bless on them which can be a bit bad sometimes as you cannot enhance some of it's skills during combat but oh well

The Warlock creatures are good but some can be a bit to expensive to buy at times.
They have only 1 ranged attacker and that is the Centaurs and they are a lev1 unit and they are abit of waste of being a lev1 ranged attacker.
The Hydras are strong but way to slow for a l;ev5 unit and they can be a bit annoying at times, so cast haste on these creatures and then watch them fly and show their wonderful clours

I really like the Warlock town and it has it's benifits as having perhaps the strongest creature in the game, and some quite powerful units that you can buy and put in your army.
A good town type to have.
