I had the exact same problem as you are having.
I have win2000 and I have Heroes Millenium cd.
Now when I started trying to play it it kept saying illegal operation, must be cancelled or something like that.
I decided that I would look on the internet for a patch so that it would work on win2000.
You should look for a patch for version 1.3 I think.
Like I mean a patch that patches it to version 1.3
It should update the .dll files, as they are the reason that HOMM2 isn't working.
When you get the patch, it should be a patch for Succesion Wars, but it doesn't matter as I installed it for my HOMM2 Gold/Millenium edition and then it worked perfectly on my win2000 machine.
You could install it on Win98, but if you don't have it, then you would be wasting your time reinstalling Windows, and I don't think a game is that worht it to change your entire operating system, or if you don't have win98 cd, buying it for maybe 50 or 100$.
Try what I said.
Im sorry that I can't give you the website where the patch is located, but if I find it then I will edit this post and give it to you, or if you have email or something I can send the patch to you if you would like me to that is.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news
Unless a third party did their own coding to help out, Heroes II is pretty freaking incompatible with Windows XP. Shortly before they went belly up 3dO stated they weren't going to spend the resources to make Heroes II capable of running smoothly on XP.

Thatīs not true Gootch.
I have currently Heroes 1, Heroes 2 + expansion and Heroes Complete installed on my comp, running XP.
And they all run without any problems.
I donīt know about "millenium edition" though, coz i have installed H2 and Price of loyality both as own version / cd (original).

Angelito, I also have all versions of heroes running perfectly on my XP HE.
If you are encountering problems, try to check if you have files: autoexec.nt, config.nt and command.com in the directory Cor your main)\windows(or winnt)\system32
If you don't and that's why it is not working, then no problem, contact me and I'll help you. If you have and it doesn't work, I am out.

Thanks for the correction Angelito. I was speaking from my experience with Heroes Platinum and my subsequent uninstallation of a very buggy Heroes 2. I had in fact assumed that it was Heroes 1 & 2 that were the cause and not the Platinum edition. Good to know info man.

Against the chlreq error that you had with the millenium edition you may try to delete the file. Start the install shield, but before continuing alt+tab out and find if it wrote chkreq.dll somewhere. delete it before continuing. Alternatively if the file is on CD, copy the CD to hard drive, delete chkreq and start install from HD. Not 100% sure it helps here, but people with Heroes IV and some others have experienced similiar error. chkreq as the name says, checks your computer suitability for the game. With very new systems it may screw over, but its complete absence allows to install.
The CD-opera issue: can you open the CD in Windows media player and listen the tracks as an ordinary music CD? You should be able if the CD and tracks are OK.
That is the best advice I can offer at the moment.
