Wizardry 8
Any Wizardry 8 players out there? It has to be one of my favourites. It's such a shame the developers went bankrupt. In fact, it was this that led me to might and magic, as I was trying to find a replacement. After getting MM9 however I was somewhat disappointed and have done very little of it.
I have run the following party through the whole game, with a little cheating:
Samurai
Priest
Fighter
Valkyrie -> Lord
Lord -> Rogue
Ranger -> Gadgeteer
Plus RFS and Sexus.
Now I'm going again with the excellent Deathstalker Mod...
Fighter - deals damage, and more importantly never dies
Priest - couldn't do without the guy, resurrecting and healing
Ninja - waste of time, brought along because I wanted to try something new
Bishop - packed a punch early on in the game but the Rapax Rift put an end to his barrage of fire spells
Samurai - boring, lost his good Demonsbane sword somehow
Bard - deals damage. A LOT. (with Ember)
Plus:
Myles - operating the ever useful Buzz Blade
and Scorn - a nice new RPC
Anyway, play play play, it had me addicted, far superior to MM9 - maybe enough interest could bring us part nine of the series

wizardry 8???
if this is the PC, argh
one of the worst PC games i ever played, just
i had an army of a farie bishop, human phsionic, lizardman warrior, elf ranger and others i cant remember. the game was just so so bad
far better than M&M 9 you say???
M&M 9 was game of the year compared to Wizardry 8
im not to worried as i got it for 10 $ at EB games
i have already rated this game, all you u need to know is below
the basics: u start of with a party of 6 characters which have a nice range (fairies and dracons and such) and there are many skills which makes wach char different. u also raise skill levels by practicing the skill. quite good so far
now in most RPGs there is an immediate problem which must be solved to get on with the game. no change with this one. now when you solve this starting problem you get into the world. then u go to the first town
now it gets bad
the town isnt a town at all. it is just a bunch of buildings. u can only enter 2 (?!?!?!) and those are the tavern and blacksmith. and it is like that for the rest of the game. there are no "real" towns. this is further back-uped by the fact that there are no civilians what so ever
but wait, there's more!
now is a really great RPG you need a few things like good char development (like exp and attributes like strength, dex), good story, realism (civilians and towns) decent graphics, range of items and side quests. a game like Might and magic 7 and 8 and Baldurs gate 2 has these qualities and have them implemeted very well which is why they are so great
but wizardry 8 lacks 2 of these things. they lack realism (no civilians isnt real) and they lack side quests!!!
thats right no side quests. there is one and only one way to go in this game. and that way is to go and do the main story. no little side quests like taking care of an old womans rat problem or defeating a dragon. none of that just the main story
that is what makes the game a load of stuff you dont wanna have
and another thing that makes the game bad is that the main quest (the only thing u can do) is very very hard. u need a walkthrough to get through the game) and if u dont get a walkthrough then that will add some 20 hours to the game time. all of which is you wandering around stumbing on what to do next
well i think i have made my point. if none of what i have said bothers you then get the game. but the fact that the realism factor and no side quests is absent from the game really made the game unpleasant for me
overrated and very very hard
a must NOT have
bad bad game

Ooh that's harsh.
"the town isnt a town at all. it is just a bunch of buildings. u can only enter 2 (?!?!?!) and those are the tavern and blacksmith. and it is like that for the rest of the game. there are no "real" towns. this is further back-uped by the fact that there are no civilians what so ever"
The towns are what I dislike in MM, from what I saw they were all the same. And civilians just stand around don't they?. Wizardry at least has some movement. And there are more than 2 buildings to enter - also Anna's shop, the bank, the HLL, the town hall, the tower (eventually!).
No side quests I agree with, but in MM again I found what little I did tiresome, dull or too hard. Wizardry I was able to do lots of before resorting to a walkthough - not too hard, certainly compared to games like Monkey Island. Besides, the fun for me comes in the battles too.
"wandering around" - yeah, lots of that, I see your point here. Plus, the graphics may not be the best quality but I do like it in terms of artistic quality. Who can't like the looks of the Rapax, the Deathknight maybe...
Anywho, we're all entitled to our opinions. Perhaps I will be persuaded to play MM again.

I think I've got Wizardry Gold lying around somewhere. How is it, compared to Wizardry 8 and other oldschool rpgs?

Gnoll_Mage you do have your opinions and preferences
you dislike the towns in MM but i love the towns in MM. the side quests i also like and you dislike. the thing that i like bout side quests is that they can make you stronger. but also if you get tired of the main story line, you can go off and gain some gold and come back. Wizardry didnt offer this to you
graphics were alright. just sometimes when 1 enemy retreats you are still in battle mode and it gets very hard to escape from
this game is good if you dont like those towns which have many doors to open and people to talk to like in MM and if you dont like side quests

True, although money was not that important. In fact, with MM that was I felt a problem - the gameplay mechanics with battles, winning, buying new levels etc. It just didn't seem to work.

Agreed here certainly. But just avoid making them afraid or blind and you're okay...

I felt that the MM towns weren't very full of life either, although they at least do seem more town-like.

I'm a big wizardry 8 fan.
I have mm 9 but I don't really like the real time aspect. Character development seems limited also, only 3 classes?
Wizardry has always been a combat game. Get good gear and see what the toughest enemy you can beat is.
I hate ninja's and samurai in wiz 8. I'll stick with my monk and valkyrie...with a mage for good luck.
Wiz 7 is fun too. I liked wiz 6 a little more but 7 was good.
What is the deathstalker mod? What does it do?

New Mod for Wizardry 8
I have just completed a mod for Wizardry 8 using Madgods Cosmic Forge editor.
Here is a brief description along with the links to download it that i posted one the Wizardry 8 sites for anyone here interested.
DODDTHESLAYER 2.0_RISE OF THE ANCIENTS (A Tribute to Flamestryke)
Mod is now updated to version 2.3
Since nearly 20 bugs have been discovered since the release of version 2.0 i felt it better to release a new version rather than have everyone download 2.0 and then have to add 2 patches for 2.2 and 2.3
Take a look at the bottom of the readme file for all the changes.
All the links for 2.0 and patch 2.2 are no longer usable because they are not needed now.
Here are the links for version_2.3:
http://www.divshare.com/download/5128028-3f9
http://rapidshare.com/files/135806800/DoddTheSlayer_2.30.rar
NOTE: From time to time Divshare will not be available due to my exeeding bandwidth but this is only a temporary unavailability.
Recommend that you download them to a new folder on your desktop and unpack them there.
please read the readme file for further details about the mod. But for now i will give you all a list of what has been added since version 1.4
1) Only one versin of the mod which was built on top of version 1.4 expert.
2) 5 new locations created by me and one new dungeon created by Qusari.
3) Extended storyline connected by my 4 of my 5 new locations.
4) Lots of new items and a few new monsters.
5) The new skill of enchanter for specialist spellcasters.
6) Instrument and Gadget upgrades for Bards and Gadgeteers.
7) A new intro to replace the Sirtech intro created by Qusari.
8) Hirable RPC's with voices. (Only the sirtech pcs voices).
9) Generated traders now gone in exchange for reliable static ones.
UPDATE:
There is now a Patch_2.4 which is very important. You can download it here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?9gscr3zn1gu
This changes all the new items for Bards and Gadgeteers, because game code was not recognising the upgrades as they were.
You can read more about this and 2 other changes in the readme file.
This patch is only to be applied to installed mod version_2.3
For more info about my mods starting from Version 1.0 through to 2.0
go to the VN boards here:
http://vnboards.ign.com/wizardry_8_spoiler_board/b21210/p1
There are other sites discussing it but this one is by far the most active.

Sigh
All I can find are demos for Wizardry 8. I want so much to play the game.
Wish there was a download for it.(Don't want to pay a hundred dollars for it.)
Someone needs to make a game like it. I want a good ole dungeon crawl, none of this. "Hey, you look strong. Go fetch me my spoon from under that rock over there." RPG's have become such nonsense. So sad.
Be well,

I've been asking GOG to do it. I can't find their game suggestion tool anymore. I bet it will turn up on a download website sooner or later. Maybe they have problems because Sirtech is no more?

Too true. I'm still waiting for a game that will fill the unique Wizardry-shaped hole this game left me with when I finished it.

Yeah, everyone is trying to copy WoW these days. If only WoW was a decent game.
You would think someone would say, "Well, if everyone else is going to make games like that, then maybe I should make something to get the "other gamers"..and their money." , but I guess not.
I want a hardcore dungeon crawler! LOL

Games like the Wizardry games.(Though, 8 was a little different, it is still very much a true dungeon crawler.)
Traps, spells, axes, armor, blood, and LOOT.....mmm, loot. LOL
