Less creatures. Good or Bad?
So with less creatures AVAILABLE (There are about 48 creatures available at maximum)!!!! how do you think Heroes IV is going to pan out?
I think it is relatively good with less creatures, since it gives you more time to build them up, and build a strategy between you and your other creatures.
It also has its downsides. Less playability. People may get sick of playing with the same two creatures. Not as much depth. If there were 100 or so creatures, it would keep us going, and we could really explore the game.
So what do you think??

ThE_HyDrA. I think that there should be more creatures because you get to explore the lands and don't get bored of using the same creatures over and over again.

I know I will enjoy the game anyway, but I don't see the bad point having the most creatures possible. It has been said that the reduction of units was necessary to better define the surviving ones... nah, a question of marketing. Only looking at this forum they can obtain ideas for a lot of creatures. The only reason I see for reduce creatures is the effort of designing, balancing and animating a lot of them. A few months after the HOMM4 release, we will see a lot of new creatures in expansions, and they will be weel designed.

Bored?
Who's going to be bored?
Think of H3 and tell me you don't like playing with, say 6 stack's for 10 Archangels each! A horde of Dragons or Titan's. I've done this many times. The trick in H4 will to have the new monsters so unique that you will really be torn between which special ability or strenght you want to use.
Do I want speed or strenght, extra spell casting or high defense. This, I feel will be the test for longevity.

I don't see the reduced number of monsters overall as a problem. However, I see the reduced number of monsters that can be recruited in towns as a nuisanse. Only five creature dwellings in a town is too little. (Okay, you have a choice for three of them, but you still can't build more than five.) If you count the structures in a town they seem to have increased by 2-3, so the towns are now much less focussed on producing creatures than other things.
In order for a monster to be usable, you need would need continus supplies of it or it needs to be extremely powerful. If you have to recruit the monsters from external dwellings, the stack size of these creatures are likely to be much too small to make a difference in the late game. This greatly reduces the usability of neutral monsters.
A bit also depends on how they handle neutrals. If each neutral creature gives a morale penalty because it's considered a faction of its own, a high amount of neutrals in the game is highly undesirable.
Looking at the neutrals in HoMM III, I would usually never consider hiring a creature like a troll, mummy, or nomad. Most of the neutrals were not only available in small numbers, they were also expensive for what they did. Thus these creatures are mostly used to make up enemy stacks. With 18 neutrals and 48 town based creatures, I hope they make the neutrals alot more worthwhile in HoMM IV.

*Blah* (Vampire from Heroes 2)
Dragonhunter is right. Read his post.
The game will rock, and with Heroes fighting and very unique creatures the game will be a lot of fun and have great replayability.
The only thing I am slightly pissed about is that there are no Vampires or Griphons, yet.

Too early to tell
I don't think it will really harm the game, but I don't know if it's better. Consider that in the original HoMM3 there were 56 town creatures (I don't count upgrades as separate, most of them were redundant and almost every creature was upgraded quickly). Here there are 48, not a significant change. Since you can't have all the creatures now, I think that this game will have much more replayability than HoMM3 did. In HoMM3 with AB, you have 9 choices for your town type. Here you essentially have 48 - 6 towns, each of which can be built up in 8 different creature combinations.

Not a problem.
Of course I want as more creatures as possible, but I dont think that its will be a problem, cause every unit will have uniq speciality, and alot of new clsses of heroes.
Bandits: have the Advanced Stealth skill, which means they can sneak by first level creatures on the adventure map and steal any treasure those creatures might be guarding.
Beholders have a random magic benefit (genies in Homm3)
Berserkers: These guys are maniacs, attacking fast and furiously.
Bone Dragons induce Panic in creatures when they attack. A creature which Panics cannot retaliate, and it runs a short distance away from the dragon, if it can.
Cavalery units will get first strike ability, meaning they don't suffer a simultaneous counterattack when they attack a unit.
Crossbowman can ignore range modifiers when attacking.
Cyclopes has area attack.
Dwarves have 50% magical resistance.
Genies will have their very own spell books, and they'll be able to cast a variety of different spells in battle, rather than just a random protection spell as in the previous Heroes game. Flying unit.
Gold Golems have 75% Magic Resistance, and they are Mechanical.
Halflings are Giant slayers (probably do extra damage to Giant-kin)
Leprechauns will be able to bestow a good-luck bonus on their friends.
Minotaurs can block physical attacks 30% of the time. A blocked attack does no damage to the Minotaur.
Nightmares can cast Fear causing their enemy to lose their turn, they are also immune to Life Magic spells and take less damage from Life-aligned creatures.
Pikemen can negate all first strike abilities.
Titans have No Melee Penalty. Chaos Ward (probably some kind of protection from Chaos Magic)
White Tigers have First Strike.

They just need a few more creatures to make it really fun for every one. In my opinion, just add the grffin manticore, and add a few of the other old HoMM3 Dragons, but not all of them.

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
I don't think less creatures should mean poorer gameplay. Look at it this way:
Present games industry is dotted with mixed-genre types, as in Action-Adventure, RPG-Tactics, TBS-FPS-MMPR-whatever... Have you ever played Magic: The Gathering or Master of Magic? As it seems now (not just my opinion!) HOMM4 comes out with plenty of influences from these two great games, borowing some of theis best pieces...
I like TBSs, but I absolutely love RPGs, and HOMM4 seems to be more preoccupies with this latter aspect than before. Thumbs up for that, and I am looking forward to playing it. I've already picked up my favorite town, as well as some interesting hero abilities
Just my opinion...

Well, it could have worked well both ways. if it is too early to tell, say what you would rather have; more or less creatures!
