Now then, I was wonering if it is possible to change the images of your hero, meaning the portrait, in heroes III SOD(for instance downloading a random image of a fish and seting it as the heroīs portrait).
And if so, then can somebody tell me how.
Iīm making this map and it is important that i could change that. Though I can all the same cope without doing this, but it would be very nice if somebody who knows how to do such a thing could tell me.

As far as I know, this is one of the simplest modifications possible with the Wake of Gods fanmade expansion. Perhaps you should check it out. There's a whole section dedicated to it on Heroes Community.

I thought quite alot about making the map in WoG, I even got it half way finished, but it didnīt turn out as i liked and as i had expected. Still I ended up making it in SoD and now there are just a few last minor modifications needing to be added. The idea actually came to me from a map that was SoD but somehow one of the chief characterīs image was changed into a custom image(some kind of mutant as it was then). Pity, I didnīt catch up with the author and now I donīt even remember in which map it was in.

Heroes 3
A hero's portrait is actually two graphics files in pcx format (256 colours). The larger file must be 58x64 pixels, while the smaller one must be 48x32.
First back up your old files (warn your players to do the same, so that they could restore the original settings later!).
You can find all the portraits in the data folder. The files are named this way:
hpl001kn.pcx
hps001kn.pcx
(= hero portrait large/small, number of the hero - 001, class of the hero - knight)
Rename your custom files and overwrite the portraits of the hero you want.
You can find a set of pre-done portraits at ByteBandit's Archive yahoo groups, and a different one at Gangrail's site.
If you want to share your work, pack the new portraits with the map.
In WoG, you can set portraits without overwriting the existing ones. Pack your custom portraits with your map and tell the players to unpack the pictures into their data folder.
As for setting the portrait in the game, the script is easy. Open the scenario with the editor and go to tools > map specifications > timed events > add, and type this:
ZVSE
!#HE148:L1^gelu.pcx^;
!#HE148:L2^gelu1.pcx^;
Set the day to 500, click OK and save the map.
In English, this reads:
This is an ERM script (ZVSE) which sets (!#) Gelu's (148) portraits (L1, L2) to custom pictures gelu.pcx and gelu1.pcx stored in the data folder.
Heroes 4
You'll need H4 Face Kit (read more HERE).
The Equilibris team used to keep the tool updated at their downloads page.

The portraits are part of h3bitmap.lod located in your game data folder. For direct editing you will need to use resedit but for WoG is not necessary. Some sets of portraits are also here: bbarchive6
Oh, I forgot, you need to join these group first
Important PS: So far easiest way how to get this is to rename your portrait accordingly to hero portrait which you want to replace (resedit is your friend) and put it into your data folder.

Question: for the RoE/AB/SoD/Comp versions, is it possible to simply add images to the bitmap.lod file, instead of overwriting an image? Is there a limit to the amount of images you can add?
