Unique LAN problem Please help me play :(
Hello. I have scoured the Library for help with my problem, but it seems to be unique. Here's a description:
I have 2 computers behind a Netgear router using wireless cards, hooked up to the internet. I host a game on comp 1 (TCP/IP), and I join the game with comp 2. I have all the ports that HOMM3 needs to play online opened in my router for the IP address of the hosting computer. I have no firewalls running. Here's the crazy part: on comp2 it says,
"Receiving map headers from host". It never stops saying that, and when I go to advanced options (where one can select one's town and hero), it's REALLY weird: I can't change my town or hero, and where the hero's picture would be it's like 5 different hero pictures all chopped up side by side (kind of like vertical blinds), and there's a big orange circle and slash through it. Same with the town. I can't select either, but I can change my starting bonus, though I can only select wood or gold (no random or artifact). Furthermore, ALL the writing on comp 2's screen is in orange script, which is weird. Now, comp 1 is normal, and can select everything correctly. If I have a 3rd computer join, it also says "Receiving map headers..." and has the weird pictures and the orange writing. Also, when I get the orange writing, I can't select anything on those computers except BACK out. Here's the last thing: I hooked up the computers with cables and used IPX. One time it worked, but after that, even in IPX I still get the funky writing/pictures/"receiving map headers...". Any suggestions? I'm really tired of hot seat. Incidentally, I can play other games on my LAN no problem, but let's face it, other games suck compared to HOMM3. PLEASE HELP! I will send tremendous praises in return!

At the top of the page, there's a topic: "How can I solve my online-gaming problmes". Post THAT question there.

"Recieving map headers.." is normal at the start of an online connection. Now it just depends how many maps the host has in his "maps" folder. If he has tons, it takes pretty long till all are recieved. However, if he has NONE in that folder, the "recieving" part will take forever!
So my suggestion:
Move all maps but 1 or 2 into a new created folder (name it as u wish, but not "maps") and then start the connection again.
Post the result here please. With that information, we could proceed....

Update on my LAN problem
First, I put my post here because I didn't think it applied to Online play, considering I have a LAN problem that occurs even if my router is not connected to the internet. However, I will be sure to post tech problems there next time.
Second, thanks Angelito for taking a stab at my problem. I emptied my map folder except for one, and found that I have the same problem. I double-checked all my router settings, and found that I didn't have one of the correct ports forwarded, so I fixed that, but I still have the same problem. I wanted to take a screen shot of my weird game setup screen, but I have found that I don't know how to do that. I pressed "print screen" and ALT print screen, but nothing happens. How does one do that? I will also copy my router port forwarding screen.
Thanks

I have copied my screen, now I need help putting them here
Hi. Pol, thanks for helping me take screen shots. Now, I would like to put them here, but when I click "insert image" it asks me where it is located, and I just have no clue as to how to put my images here. I feel rather incompetent at this; any help? Also, I am going to try that Hamachi and see if it works.

After you have taken the screenshot you have to paste it into photoshop, paint or whatever program you use to edit pictures. Then save the picture you just pasted, then you can come here again and brows to where you saved the whole thingie!

I don't see an attach file button
Cliffie,
I'm trying to find the browse option, but all I see on the left is an insert image button, which gives me an html address option, but I'm not cool enough to know what my html address of the file on my desktop is. Any suggestions?

Aha, well then u have to upload the picture somewhere. There are some free webspaces out there, u'll have to look them up. Maybe u got some free space with your internet service provider?

I have narrowed down the problem!
Well, I uninstalled and reinstalled HOMM3, and I have partially eliminated the problem. I can play custom or default maps with no problems between two computers on my LAN.
However, I still get the weird split pictures with RANDOM maps. Does anybody know what may cause that? I really like playing random maps, but I can live without it. Additionally, I'm going to try to build several random maps, rename them, and put them in my normal map directory.

What version of HOMM do you use? Have you tried to update?

version
I have the Platinum edition, so I think it is the most updated version. When I right-click on the file, go properties, and click version, it says 4.0.0.0, which seems high, but I think I've read here that Platinum is the latest.

I would download or borrow an older(or an other) version of the game then install and it update it. If you have that possibility

I would really like to see how your screen looks like when that happens. Can u make a screenshot and post it here? (Perhaps it has something to do with HOTSEAT settings...)
On another note, version 4.0.0.0 is called Heroes Complete and itīs the best version u can have.

pictures may be up if this works
Ok, I think I may have found a place to put my photos. The quality sucks, but I think you can see the weirdness. The first photo is the "joining" computer, and I think you can see the weird "split face" on the starting hero; also, all the starting towns are castles, even though it should be random. The second computer is the host computer, and it seems to be ok. I am working on getting up photos of my router settings. Thanks everybody!

better pictures and pictures of router ports
Host computer (this seems ok)
Joining computer (this is the problem comp; look at the weird hero faces and the town set on castle, even though it should be random).
Here is my port forward screen; you may need to download the pic and zoom.
Here is my port triggering screen.
Thanks!
