how is it a waste of time? When i'm playing hotseat, i don't like when my Necro opponent spends hours killings peasants just to raise a few skellies ^^

Ok I turned on "Quick combat" and indeed it saves a lot of time..and if the ai does screw up, what it sometimes does you can just replay. Thanks for this tip. I like it.

yeah, and my point is you don't improve your tactics when you play a battle against the AI that you know you will win with no casualties

I can't even imagine myself playing auto-combat! Combat is my fav time of the game! Well if u  r playing campaign sometimes it's getting boring but I never trust AI anyway.....

well, wiping the floor with creatures you want to kill for XP or skellies is hardly strategic =)
And, sorry to repeat myself, but you don't have to trust the AI now. You can see what the result would be, and either accept it or replay the battle to your liking! So if you don't take casulaties, or very few, you click ok, if you're not happy, you click "replay" and you fight. That's really great, trust me, try it out for a whole map, you'll see how great an improvement it is from the previous games. I never used it (in H2, H3, H4), but in this game it rocks.

Well ok maybe it's soon and I still like to fight all the time I believe after some time I'll use it too.....

Perhaps its just me, but the Quick Combat AI seems to play a bit to well... I hardly ever have a reason to replay a battle after the first two weeks once I have a decent army up and running. I just went through a Big 6 player map vs the computer and only played perhaps 10 battles...

Or perhaps I just need to buff up the difficulty level? Playing on Hard currently. Just feels frustrating when in the later stages of the game the Neutrals just cant compete with my army. Would be fun if the respawns would actually be worth fighting, rather than having to mow through 10 stacks of 100 peasants...

I only use it when I know that I'll win, especially getting a weak enemy.  However, I NEVER use it when fighting enemy heroes and during sieges as the computer very often makes mistakes that cost you dearly.

This guy must the the smartest on AoH!

One thing that needs to be corrected is when a Dungeon hero casts empowered armageddon during a quick combat, when it is completely unnecessary.

It should be possible to disallow auto combat when hosting a game.
When I play someone online, it's not because I want to play the same dumb computer. I can always play against AI offline. And with tactical _human_ decisions removed, there's little value left in HOMM.
I'd consider it rude if my opponent used it.  I'd never play him again. People who disagree are those who enjoy winning at all costs, even against a retard such as AI.

Tactical combats were always the most fun part of Master of Magic and Heroes of Warcr... er, Might and Magic.

I don't think it's possible to use auto combat in human vs. human combat... or is it? If it is it's indeed kind of silly...

If you mean using autocombat against the AI, I don't really see the harm in using autocombat in multiplayer against a totally outnumbered stack of neutrals or something that even the dumbest AI would decimate without losses, spares a lot of time that can be spent on the more important things in a heroes' life

I think that some people here are confusing auto combat and quick combat...

You can't use quick combat against another human player, but you can use auto combat.

Yep

The auto-combat or quick-combat mode results are a very good base to learn basic combat and how to use yours units well. If you can not have best result most of the time, something is wrong.

The next step is multiplayer...

The autocombat is not entirly usless. When I started H5 on the early campaigns, I used it, and I you pay attention it has a few (5 - 30) good moves in it. Now I only half use it -- I turn it on on stupid units, like a pile of a few scouts I picked up on the adventure map, but I do the rest by hand. I use it on pathetically easy battles too.

Mostly autocombat is to save time, or help on dynamic combat, not a substitute for tactics

Quick combat: Quick combat is godly, but seems to suffer from faction and spell bias.  For instance, I don't think quick combat makes the best use of the raise dead spell.  I also find that it occasionally uses up spell points for bizarre reasons.

Auto combat: I do not use auto-combat against other players, though it doesn't bother me with my opponent does so (especially when you learn to exploit the auto-combat AI). OTOH, I find that if I am unsatisfied with a quick combat vs. a neutral group in which I should have few/no casualties, I sometimes will use autocombat for the first 90% of combat, then switch it off and begin using raise dead, etc.  The people I play with definitely appreciate the reduction in time.  (Of course, some people in MP get pissed when you fight ANY battle without quick combat on, but that's another matter.)
