something about hydras
quoted by monstrous.com
The hydra of Lerne is a fierce creature born from Echinda and Typhon. The Hydra lives in a cave near Lernae. This water serpent was known as having multiple heads, usually numbered at nine. It was the second of Heracles' twelve labours to kill the hydra. During the fight, everytime Heracles chopped off one of the hydra's nine heads, two more grew in its place. So Heracles asked for the help of his nephew Iolaus, who would cauterize each stump when Heracles chopped off a head, preventing the regrowth of two heads. Because the last of the heads was immortal, Heracles was forced to bury it under a large boulder. After killing the Hydra, Heracles dipped his arrows in the blood of the beast. These arrows were used to kill Geryon. However, this labour was not counted as Heracles was aided by Iolaus. It is sometimes said that the hydra had the body of a dog. , The breath of the hydra is so poisonous that it could kill a man just by inhalation. The foul stench that the river of Elis, Anigrus, exudes is the smell of the decaying Hydra

Hmmm.. cool information. I knew all of that apart from that the Hydra sometimes had the body of a dog, and the arrows were used to kill Geyron. Interesting, thanks, Lith_Maethor !!!

looked at monstrous.com mentioned by lith-maethor, and found a very nice site with lots of medieval images (well, also some modern fantasy style trash) and descriptions of mythological creatures .. wow.
my special favourite: manticore, although it's style probably belongs to a bit later date.. but maybe not, or maybe it mimics the appropriate bit earlier style with bit better quality. the homm3 manticore would surely feel ashamed if he saw that..

I played Heroes 2 and loved the naive, catoonesque artwork, especially the way the "Town themes" were seamed together. The music, the colours and the "feel" of each town were combined to an amazingly good end result.
I also became a dedicated player of Heroes 3, despite of my opinion of the new artwork. I was struck by the lack of originality displayed by the art department. It felt like the people who came up with an original and entertaining fanatasy theme had left 3DO and were replaced by lesser gods.
Well, after seeing the new pictures of the forthcoming episode, I think that the artwork has yet again worsened.
Despite of the new possibilties regarding 3D effects, higher resolutions, etc. that have been developed in the last 6-7 years, the people who are responsible for the art have imho (until I see evidence that proves me wrong) failed to represent an attractive and more important, original fantasy theme.
Just by reading the replies to this post one realises the amount of decisions there are to be made by the creators of our favorite game. There are hundreds of good choises of fantasy creatures that you could use in this game.
But, barring aside the gameplay aspects of these creatures(should the blabla dragon be stronger than the blabla giant or: should we put a tiger with the orcs), I could not agree with the representation of these "chosen ones".
Ok, everybody is appalled by the notorious Dragon Golem (new version), that's nothing new, but just take a look at the Phoenix, the Thunderbird, the Orc, the Devil, the different heroes etc. Imho all look unfinished and unoriginal.
The screeshots of the landscape are btw so horrible they could be a repesentation of Alice in Wonderland on acid. The same goes for the town screens.
Do not get me wrong, I will probably buy the game, maybe even for the sake of tradition. But I am dissapointed by the artwork.

Whatever...
Once upon a time there were some scared Greek peasants(u know, them with 1 HP who happened to eat some bread, baked from flour, wherin there were a tiny little black seed-alike thing...
That thing was of a fungus-like family, that lived off the wheat...
When the peasants had eaten the bread, they split the party and headed home...those who had eaten loafs with the grained fungus in them, began to see fabulous things in the dark...unimaginable hellishly black horrors or wonderful pink fluffy heavenly-nice looking kinda things...
Most got home safely...some told their wife and kids of their encounters, some told scolars who could write and perhaps even had the imagination to draw a picture of these fabulous tales and then some probably just shut up...
All in all...some thousand years after these tales have been told of by many mouths and written of in many important books...sometimes the hydras had 7 heads, sometimes the same number of legs or genitalia, some dragons had 3 heads, one with cold acid, one with fire and one who just taunted knights...even creatures totally without heads are told of...
Sooo...i guess i´ve come to this: The eye of the beholder is the one that matters here...and/or just a big enough portion of imagination to say to one self: yes! that´s probably how it was!

Do you like the game?????
Yes, i agree that some of the screenshots of the creatures look shocking, like the troll or goblin, and the orc doen't look to flash either. But look at the Bone Dragon!!! It is excellent!! We have a mix. But i think the artwork has improved from H3 and H2.
With the screenshots of the maps. They look spectacular in my opinion. But a touch too much like AOE. But still it looks excellent. Very 3D as well, that makes it feel more real. I am also glad about the proportions of the map. Before in H2 and 3, the Hero used to be a 1/3 of the size of the castle. But in H4, well, the castles are about 20 times the size or more.
The creatures on the map also look more real.

the art is not great
Zero Gero I totally agree with you, the art is not so good
Those creatures dont make our imagination go wild. most of the time when we discovered a new creature artwork, we're disappointed.
I also agree with the person "before" Zero Gero, the behemoth is ugly. Look at his long nose! He looks like a kind of homeless yeti.
Anyway, I'll buy Homm4 ass soon as it get out. I just wish the art would rock tho

me. of course i can see some alternatives that i might also like, but i do think the present behemoths have some style. it's the venom spawn that i'm concerned with, and some other things.

.........kind of fat and blobby-looking. When i first saw that creature and realised it was a Venom Spwn, i was disgusted.
I thought it would have been skinner, with a long appendage. But it isn't.Yes, and i agree that that thing, whatever its proper name is, looks excellent and highly detailed. I also like the look of the Dragon Cave in the Asylum castle. But one of my favourites has to be that Pyramid in Stronghold. I'm pretty sure it produces Cyclops.

Are you saying there is, or there should be??
If you take the former, no, i don't think there is.
But if you take the latter. Hmmmmmmm. Too many horses already. Pegasus, Unicorn, Nightmare.
If you were refering to my comment. I was talking about H3, instead of Unicorn-War Unicorn; it should have been War Horse to Unicorn. Sounds better i think. There are no upgrades in H4. So it doesn't matter.
About the Ice Elemental.
It would have to be a neutral. And where are the pics of the normal elementals anyway.
