Hmm, I see here in mine(XP SP3):

...

"Test Decomp"=dword:00000000
"Test Read"=dword:00000000
"Test Blit"=dword:00000000

...

Anyway if this is the whole solution it must be easily fixed with setupreg utility in the first case.

Hi ! I guess you're the Pol I saw on Celestial Heavens

I did not try to zero all those "Test" parameters, since testing each solution requires some time, but I would be interested if it works... My method got me rid of those crashes, but a few other minor problems appeared (e.g. the music doesn't switch to the town's theme immediately when I enter in a town). I will try this soon.

Anyway, thanks for sharing this information !

@NovHak
Yees, there's only one Pol over all forums.

I have no idea. The above mentioned Stereo fix + setupreg should take care about all troubles.

By not so much wild guess in Win7 32bits it should be smooth experience and in Win7 Pre 64bits I heard some complaints for random crashes.

While playing HoMM 3 on Windows 7 64bit I have experienced random crashes.
I believe the crashes were Mp3dec.asi related.

Not sure if changing the 'Test Decomp' entry helped but I do know that if I don't enable Windows 98 compatibility mode the game WILL crash.

So if you get random crashes on Windows 7 I would recommend to enable Win 98 compatibility. (disable desktop composition would also be a good idea).

The only problem is that the game minimized once every time I start it.
I only got a single crash (when I clicked end turn, autosave corrupted as well) since turning on compatibility. (as opposed to dozens)

If the game still crashes you could also try changing the 'Test Decomp' entry in the registry like it was mentioned in the thread.

I've had some success with this problem on Win7 by updating/reinstalling my sound drivers.

I'm not sure why it helped. Also, I played for about 3 hours without a crash, but then I haven't been playing HoMM3 a lot since then, so I can't be sure the problem won't come back.

I've been thinking of trying the GoG version to see if it makes the problem go away. Just not having to change cd's in my drive alone makes it almost worth the ten bucks.

Has anyone had crashing problems on Win7 using GoG/DosBox?

I have the GOG Homm3-complete version.  Am running under Win7/64 bit.  No crashes once I patched it with Imagecfg.

(Imagecfg is a way to patch the program so that it uses only one core of a multi-core cpu.  Homm3 will crash about once a turn on a multi-core system and Win7 if it isn't patched with Imagecfg or some other way of setting the affinity to one core)

It works really really well and, I gather, is fully patched (except for the affinity business).
