List of heroes who can never get their ultimate ability
These heroes, due to starting with a skill, but not the right skill ability, will never be able to get their ultimate. I did not include campaign heroes.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF THE THESE HEROES IF YOU WISH TO GET ULTIMATE SKILL
Haven
Irina
Inferno
Nebiros
Nymus
Necropolis
Zoltan
Dungeon
Yrwanna
Academy
Narxes
Nur
Sylvan
Anwen
Gilraen
Ossir
Wyngaal
Considering each faction has 8 heroes at their disposal, Sylvan obviously is the worst off.

There is this necklace right? which gives +1 to the primairie skill of a hero, with that you can alwyas get ultimate i think. And could you explain a bit more better why these hero's can get ultimate? I do not exactly understand what you mean with: "due to starting with a skill, but not the right skill ability".
But good info!

In order for you to get Nature's Luck you need Vitality -> Last Stand -> Stand Your Ground abilities from the Defense secondary ability. Anwen starts with Basic Defense and Protection which means that she can never get Stand Your Grand and therefore can never get Nature's Luck.

As Vicheron mentioned, you are limited to 3 abilities per skill.
If you need Battle Frenzy, Nature's Wrath and Flaming Arrows for those 3 slots, but you start with Archery, you'll have no slot available for Flaming Arrows which is required in the chain.

personally I really dislike the idea that a hero can never get the ultimate ability. They should change it so that you can pick which skill you wish to start with, for example, if a hero were to start with defense, instead of just giving him protection, let him choose from protection/evasion/vitality. Or you could have some way of being able to change you skills around via a special building, pay a small fine or something. Another idea, but maybe cause balancing issues is to allow the picking of 1 skill and 1 ability to start with, rather than a predetermined set.

So there is ultimate ability, a skill which is what the list is about...for example wizard's can pick arcane omniscience, all spells mastery.
Then there is ultimate racial skill, i.e. ultimate artificer artifacts at half cost which requires the pendant of mastery +1 skill level.
I personally have never tried for the ultimate on any map ever. Waste of time.

I've never gotten the so called ultimate skill even though I've tried that lately. Is there any special strategy to get it or do I need luck? Often when I level up, the only skills/abilities I can choose is those that aren't needed for the ultimate and therefore fills all the spots for the needed skills/abilities. Is there any special order in which you should choose them?

I've been told the best way to go about it is to get the top-level skills (Destructive Magic, Luck, etc.) first whenever possible. If you do that you'll have more choice in the sub-skills (Archery, Vitality, etc.) and should be pretty much guaranteed at least 1 along the Ultimate path.
