definitely gameplay!
I've been gaming since 70's and I had the impression in the 80's and early 90's that many (or most) developers had plenty of P&P/boardgame experience themselves.
I recall a number of very challenging strategy/war games from the early days. Unfortunately, I can't the same is true about ANY RTS I have played. Not one of them has been challenging. If you survive the initial zombie-like wave of attackers, then you are sure to win the game.
Of course, the RTS games often have stunning graphics, and other features, but lousy AI.
However, games such as Civilization and HOMM provided good gameplay, decent enough graphics and a challening AI.
It is not a coincidence that the developers behind those games had extensive gaming backgrounds. Making great graphics requires great technical skill...making a great game is an art.
One example (for me) is Sid Meier's Pirates. I played that game to death on my old Commodore. When I saw the new release, I was a bit sceptical, but once again I have been hooked by that great game.
I also keep a Windows 95/98 machine just for the purpose of playing older games, such as the Might and Magic series. They still beat almost any RPG available today (though there are exceptions, of course).

game play is a definite. I prefer actually having to know how to play than to just look at pretty pictures.

i would play heroes 3 4 and 5 if they had the graphics of 1, gameplay makes a huge difference gameplay is how fun it is graphics are just how they look i mean better graphics look cooler but it doesn't matter to much in the long run

Do they really care what we think? They say they do, that they are always interested in keeping the customer happy, that there is a lot of feedback from game enthusiasts, that they gathered a lot of information about how the game should be, but in the end all it matters is that we give them the money.
No, they care about our behaviour, not what we think. It just so happens that graphics sell games. Gamers, regardless of what they say or think, spend their money on flashy graphics. If they didn't, developers wouldn't pour so many resources into making beautiful games.

I say gameplay, just like you guys, but I have to say that I've become a little pickier the last few years. With strategy games such as Heroes of Might and Magic, graphics really don't matter that much, and I still love H3. But with RPG's, I think graphics are starting to matter more and more. I don't know why exactly, but I often don't like RPG with no FF-like graphics. (Those cutscenes with the exceptionally beautiful graphics are probably the biggest reason I've bought FFXI and FFXII ). But I don't think graphics should be chosen over gameplay. That's the essence of a game, and although graphics are definitely a great extra, they need a story and game to fit into.
Probably the worst games that exist are the ones that are based on a movie. Lord of the Rings was an exception, in my opinion, but everything else... Those kind of games often miss both graphics and gameplay, and usually don't even have a decent length.

Hmm.... Gameplay and Graphics are both important, gameplay perhaps a bit more, but there is one thing which, in my opinion, is far more important than both of them.
AMBIANCE.
A game really needs to be able to set the right kind of mood by combining graphics and music / sounds perfectly. In most games I find this lacking. A nice example of where the ambiance was good was Monkey Island 3.
As for Heroes V... It's "decent" but no more than that. You can't see the skies in-game on the map, the music isn't more than just 'decent', and only a few town views come remotely close to a good ambiance, such as Acadamy and Haven. But then, the music throws it off. It just doesn't manage to reach the good kind of ambiance.
The creatures in-battle do though.

well i agree that gameplay is the more important one but afterall they sort of work together dont they? i mean who would pay for a game with a brialliant gameplay with poor grapic or a game with awesome grapic but no gameplay?? of course there would be more people who would go for the gameplay but you need good grapics to make a good game imo

That's a good point; likewise, to some extent graphics enable gameplay. Great 3d graphics enable gameplay experiences that just can't be had otherwise.

Absolutely gameplay!
Grahpics are nice to watch for a couple of weeks but after that without a good gameplay you can't have a very long lasting game to which you want to come back over and over again.
Back then when Warcraft 3 came out many reviews were complaining about the grahpics, those grahpics were fine to me back then and what made me play WC 3 for four years was it's gameplay.
Also Baldur's Gate 2 has nice battles, great music and very much strategy oriented but the grahpics are of course outdated, almost all the characters look the same but the great storyline and the battles still keep me coming back to play that game.
Nowdays markets are filled with these eye-candy games containing nothing else but those sweet grahpics and oh, I almost forgot usually you can get a bunch of great bugs too!
Gameplay over grahpics I say.

I just saw this thread and i have to say this isnt going to be a fair discussion because everyone will say either a balance or only gameplay . .And anyone who isnt is of course going to be asked repeatedly why (And yes i noticed this thread was from more then 1 year ago!

I'll take a good story and gameplay over graphics any day. Unfortunately, games apparently can't be competitive these days without pushing graphics to the next level, especially ego-shooters.
And in turn, of course, forcing the customers to buy new computers just so that they can enjoy the latest addition their favorite genre.
Personally, I wouldn't mind if heroes 5 had about the same graphics as heroes 3. It would run a lot smoother on large maps, at least...

Second that. Gameplay is waaay too big compare to anything. It encompasses various aspects of the game, whereas graphics are but just a feature. Maybe graphics vs storyline would be a better poll.

Gameplay, definitely. I still play games that are 10 years old and that's not because they looked so good at the time. Of course, having a good-looking game is nice, but if I really only wanted graphics I'd go and buy 3DMark Vantage and run it a gazillion times.

For those of you who don't know me, I suppose I'll start off by saying that I was... ummm... still am a Heroes addict.
Heroes 5 seems to be a lot of eye-candy to me and it looks like they've tried to keep a lot of the original gameplay and elements that have made Heroes the most successful TBS of all time. LOL, with the exception of Monopoly...
*smile*
But what I have found with H5 is that it's poorly suited to quick-play. Heroes 3 was a long, drawn out process where a single game could last 15 hours. But Heroes 5... my estimate would be double that for a decent game.
LOL, I haven't played it online yet, I've had a hotseat game with an old flame and it took us the better part of a day to get through a map like Warlords (among other things). Maybe my inexperience at H5 online makes this post moot, but I'm wondering how much speed has been sacrificed to give us a game with great graphics and classic gameplay?
If I had all week to play a game, then I wouldn't be so concerned, but it seems to me like there's a missing element to this thread and it should read;
Graphics vs Gameplay vs Convenience.
H3 pushed the boundaries of that last variable to its limits and I think H4 and H5 have well and truly broken it.
How long does it take to play a single 2P map?

I remember you but from some reading I've done here and there, welcome back
A few things have changed since then and I will definitely agree that H5 seems sluggish compared to 3. But that's not because it's hard to navigate nor has it have complex controls.
The problem are the actual battles that can take a LONG time. In H3 you could not barricade your archers with 5 stacks nor could you kill a horde of swordsmen with a few harpies and probably not horde of archdevils week 2 no matter what. There are certain exploits that allow the battles to drag too long and there may be more than a few such fights per day. I have seen a turn take 45 mins and I wanted to bang my head on the wall.
No that will not happen often but when it does it's terribly annoying and if your net is unstable it is a nightmare. Normally a 2 player game will take 6 hours or so which is not too bad, simultaneous turns can help a lot with earlygame. In any case dragging a game beyond week 4-5 is not advised as some are at disadvantage in lategame, the balance does not scale accordingly. The good thing are that those factions can expand faster so you can't really say that they are weak - far from it.

I think they were speed 5 and sprites 9? If so a good morale would be enough to kill you. Anyway that's beside the point.
