I voted Succubus but in fact I think commanders are highly circunstancial.
I buy a Brute for my main so I can get extra money from every fight, this helps to buy army and hero skill advances like advanced witch huts and universities, Battle Academies and Tower of Wizardry, etc... Then I buy a Succubus to somebody else, normally a magic hero and I develop him mostly by visiting learning stones and opening treasure chests for experience. When she's strong enouch I start fighting stacks that I find usefull, even if probably still weak, like troops I'm already using or that make a difference in small stacks, like Enchanters and Master Genies.
Last time I played, by the start of week two I borrow her my only banner bought all unupgraded troops from level one and two from both towns and dwellings and attacked an abandoned mine.
She had already expert Earth and was about level 10. I got 61 ghosts, put them the banner with two retaliations and started the battle with all stacks filled with even troops, so they were easier to kill. I advanced with all my troops but the ghosts without casting, the ghosts attacked and killed some stacks in one attack, strongly creepling the others so their retaliation was weak and killed few ghosts, now I cast slow and attacked the weakest stack in reach killing more then two thirds of it and so not suffering much with the retaliation. I keep casting with my Master Genie henchman in the ghosts and cast bloodlust with hero, then attacked the strongest stack with the ghosts, while just moving the others around so they didn't got any deffense. The ghost stacks mostly killed my remainning stacks, leaving the ghost alone so their two extra retaliatons were enouch and I had already the strongest ghosts stack. Next turn I cast shield, stone skin, etc. I came out with a stronger hero then my main was at the time and 1185 ghosts. Unfortunatly I lost my henchman due to a mistake but everything else was ok, so I went back to town to ressurect him.
Do I need to say that from this moment on (this was day two or three of week 2) I had the game in hands?
I mostly work with commanders this way: some heroes have Brutes and do the fighting against opponent heroes and explore the map, others (their number will vary largely according to how frequent are level 7 and up neutral stacks in map) will have a Succubus and will be used to get dragons from Utopias and joinners from level 7 neutral stacks. I will keep all Necro heroes I'll find but I will only start develop them after I have three components of the Cloack and I can upgrade them in an Artificier to assemble it. By that time I buy a Soul Eater, cause six stacks of liches will need an undead commander.
I should probably add that I normally play with "Commander's must be hired", "Choose commander class" "Commander witch huts", "Altar of Transformation" and "Extended Creature Upgrades". Without these last two Succubus is pretty much useless except for this trick, unless you are playing a dragon template or similar custom map.
I have to try the trick with Masters of Summoning, if summoning different stacks of level one unupgraded creatures the number of ghosts raised will be almost unlimited.

since i only play with necro, i'm gonna have to say soul eater. because animating the dead is fun.
i really wish i could do that in real life. i would kill people just to reanimate them again and send them home.
"daddy, you smell..."
"BWAINZ!!!!" *crunch* *ensuing screams*
...i could start the zombie apocalypse all by myself. me.
mannnnn... if only...

Don't you assemble Cloack or something?
Soul Eater is the only commander I give Magic Power from start but when I finally have Grand Master I normally already know the spell and can cast it much more efficently. I admit it saves troops in the very beginning but my main reason to choose Soul Eaters for Necromancers is that they won't die if my liches shoot an adjacent stack.

Succubuss. At high level it allows you to attack any stack on the map (4K Gorynches etc) and join a large part of it to your army. If only your hero is strong enough, you will win and save some units for later.

I had a map that was full of local events like being attacked by 20.000 black dragons and 15.000 Darkness Dragons splitted in stacks of 5.000. You know how I prepared for this meetings? I would give my hero the Helm of Immortallity, the Orb of Vulnerability and a stack of one pixie, then use the joinners to win the fight. The need to resurrect thousands of troops in each battle (or win by summoning troops) is the reason why I prefer to give the Succubi to magic oriented heroes.
