The succubus is the only ranged unit.  What do you do when it's blocked?  I also think chain shot is incredibly weak.  I'm always frustrated by how little damage the succubi do.  Besides, when neutral, they usually shoot back at the ballista, which is just fine.

I've had the most luck with griffins, but they die fast.  I like the lizard the best, for no particular reason.

Battle Dive is easy to dodge. No need to move every stack at all.

depends. If the griffins get morale right after jumping, they will land so fast that it's virtually impossible to prevent them from doing damage. Also, a clever player won't blindly jump at shooters, only: slower walkers are also a good target, especially when you have high morale.

My favorite lv4 is Succubus Mistress. Too bad you can't mix them whit other armies tough. Druids have too low growth to be excellent but Imperial Griffins are still the strongest of all lv4 creatures. You can dodge battle dive but you lose your ranged turn(s).

Succubus mistress rocks!!!

chain shot is good up till its second ricochet then the rest of the damage becomes insignificant.

So, damage of Succubus mistress:
1.5 times (6 to 13)
= 9 to 19

You forget the Succubus' ranged retaliation Will almost always ensure the succubus won't be attacked by enemy shooters (hey, why should they choose a retaliation?).

Also the Druid is screwed because he has a stupid logarithmic formula for his spells (but the damage is not bad, though)..

Also Battle Dive does not boost damage -- because the Griffin wastes 2 turns for that.. but it does offer: a) attack every square and b) no enemy retaliation

Griffins are the best when it comes to final fight.
But speaking of general usefulness i'd rather choose Archmages. Their creeping powers are enourmous and still are very good in final fight , especially when you split them in several stacks (nobody does rakasha anyway so you got the room)

Griffin: Battle dive is quite useful. As mentioned by someone above, if it gets good morale it is almost impossible to avoid . A bit fragile, however.

Succubus: The only shooter for inferno and is rather weak (low damage) in my opinion. The good point is that they can use range retailiation.

Vampires: Less powerful than those in Heroes IV, but can still stay "alive" for a long time if they can find weak creatures to hit.

Dark Rider: If it runs 5 tiles before attack it can completely ignore target's defense, very powerful indeed.

Druid: The dwelling is expensive to build, and the overall stats are not good as well.

Mage: Good at creeping, in later battles, however, it is difficult to fire a shoot without hitting your own troops.

Brawler: The weakest of all tier 4 in my point of view. Fragile and doesn't hit very hard. They never even get a chance to attack in my games.

Shaman: The only spellcaster in Stronghold, I found them rather useless as they are slow and doesn't hit hard. Haste and slow can be dispelled by enemy heroes too.

I personally like Dark Rider and Griffin the most, as they are offensive and can do a lot of damage.

Yes, but think of their base spell damage. Great early game, I think.

Btw, is it just me or is espen a necromancer in it's purest form?

the vampire lords are the best.
the have life drain, are undead (obviously) so they cant be blinded or something, the have no retaliation, are pretty fast for necropolis, and even though there stats suck, i can always count on them to survive any battle. One time i had 65 vampire lords against 23 giants. I completely owned the giants without any losses.I also only had zoltan and the giants were neutral and were listed as challenging for me. It was completely against the odds and i beat em with no losses.
proof that vampire lords are best. I can give you huge negatives on the others, but i gotta poop.

true that, but the beauty about being a vampire lord is that chances are, there will be a lot of them. So on 1v1 it has no chance, but if it is a lot vs. a lot, vampire lords would win

You need the speed of the prince and the occassional torpor is much better than the slow and steady lord. If you take soldier's luck, it will be much better.

1. Grim Raider
A very important creature for Dungeon. They last long, they can reach almost everything and deal a lot of damage. Lizard bite is always welcome. I rather have rider charge than wheeling charge.

2. Battle Griffin / Imperial Griffin
Haven without griffins just ain't the same. I find it quite hard to choose which one's better. I like battle dive better than rush dive and 5 more initiative is a LOT, but once you've had a taste of dying very slowly with battle griffins I feel like flipping a coin every time I have to choose.

3. Vampire Prince
The needed stronger version of the vampire lord. Life drain is still a great ability and torpor compensates enough for the lack of no enemy retaliation. The undead need some more physical power.

4. Archmage
A very strong spellcaster and a must for Academy, for creeping as well as for late game. Battlemages are good too, but I prefer a nice fireball or an extra cleansing.

5. Succubi Mistress
Perhaps not as strong as the druid might be, I think the succubi has a more important role in her army than the druid has as she's the only shooter. Some people claim the chainshot ability is overestimated and weak, but I disagree. I just love it when all those red numbers appear on my screen.
Seducing is fun too, but be honest, would you rather be seduced by a succubi mistress or a succubi seducer?

6. Earth Daughter
An important creature for Stronghold. Casting haste and slow is always nice (especially slow because of her swift strike ability) and her hexing attack is a welcome bonus. The extra stats gained by the bloodrage levels are just marvelous and for some reason my daughters always manage to have a lot of rage points. Sky daughters are no option at all.

7. Druid Elder
Don't get me wrong, I'm very fond of druids and I think they're strong, it's just that one has to be on the seventh place and I think druids are 'less important' (I hardly dare use these words) for the army than the other six. But who knows one heavy lightning bolt or one hit with elven luck might just change my mind...

8. Berserker
A dissapointment in this row of very nice creatures. No matter how much people praise its damage and its effectiveness in combination with runes, they just die too quickly.
