Heroes' experience
a small question i was asking to myself is about heroes experience.
Does anyone know how it will work ?
For example if you've got only one hero in your party, it will gain some experience after a fight.
But what if you've got 2, 3, 6 ?
Will they all gain as much as the first one ? Will it be splitted equally between all heroes ?
Will it depend on actual heroes experience, or on what they've done during the fight ?
Let's take an exemple.
You've got a level 40 hero with tons of black dragons, and another level 1 hero. You fight hundreds of behemots.
You win, your main hero and black dragons actually helped, but the secondary hero basically didn't, is he gonna win experience as if he had defeated the behemots by himself ?
Even if he gets only half of it (the more likely to happen), that will probably be enough anyway to let him go up to level 10 or 15, without him having done anything. That would be a pretty fast way to improve a hero, without losing much for your main as for a level 40 that experience wouldn't be much and it would make only maybe a one level difference with or without the secondary hero. And finally you would have taken no risk (as it was the case in homm3 when fighting only with the secondary), because your creatures still benefits the presence of the main hero.

1) The level 1 hero probably won't survive the fight anyway unless you're very careful (and lucky), and I don't know whether heroes who die during a fight will get experience or not.
2) I think experience will be split between the heroes evenly (being part of a pitched battle, even if you're not much help, can teach you a lot).

Hmmm... The creatures benefit from the main hero, but they should benefit from the secondary hero, too. And if he is also strong, the creatures will become much stronger... But, on the other hand, most of the artifacts will affect only the hero that wears them and not his creatures. That should balance the power.

I read somewhere the experience will be shared among all of the heroes equally. If it is so, it will be really easy to make a poor hero much stronger. The role of the secondary heroes will be totally different in H4 - they will be used mainly for uncovering the map, because of the fog of war. Having in mind the wandering troops will really be wandering (they can attack you), I think this will be a useful feature.

I don't know how it will work, although I have some opinions on how it should work.
1. Heroes that died receive no XP from the combat.
2. Hero level should not affect the amount of XP you gain from a fight. (This is handled by the the fact that a lower level Hero is more likely to die in the fight.)
3. The XP shouldn't be shared between the heroes. (Meaning: if there's more than one Hero in the combat then there should be more XP to divide between the Heroes.) This is because the game should encourage players to develope multiple heroes.
Perhaps something like this:
1 surviving hero: receives 100% of XP value.
2 surviving heroes: each receives 80% of XP value.
3 surviving heroes: each receives 70% of XP value.
4 surviving heroes: each receives 60% of XP value.
5 or more surviving heroes: each reveives 50% of XP value.
The reason for increasing the XP is that (especially in the late game) each hero possibly replaces a horde of creatures with a power, which is potentially much higher than the single hero. Therefore the risk and difficulty of the combat in increased.
4. The heores should receive XP for all creatures faced. Fleeing should not be a working tactics to reduce the amount of XP gained by the opponent's heroes.

Djive, I hope you're right about gaining experience for all creatures in a battle if they retreat. In D&D I know the criteria for getting XP is encountering the threat and dealing with it by killing them or driving them off. It bothers me to come up to a pitched battle and get almost nothing because my troops wait and then he runs before most of them get to take their delayed turn.

I'm afraid I don't know at all. I'm just hoping.
As you said, heroes should get XP for the threat they face, not for what they kill. It doesn't bother me that the fleeing creatures get away with artifact and similar, it does annoy me that I don't get the XP.
