I like zomies because they do their job well - die. After all how there will be strong units when all are not week. In my opinion zimbies are not useless if you can play well.

Every town has their own "deadly combo" utilizing its towns strengths and the stronger units there. I think the towns are balanced in that sense, they each have a combination that proves very deadly.
The problem I have with that is that there shouldn't be one combination that is better than all the rest (within a town), there should be several combinations that can work well together. Ubi did a fairly good job with balance, however, I think if those neglected units were improved a bit, not just in one town but all of them, it would create a couple different possible creature combinations that would add a little more strategy and guess work on the opponents side. Obviously this would require a little reworking of the units, making some creatures work better with others and not so well with some.
Now I'm not saying there is only one combination that works for each town, I am just saying that there is generally a combo of units that is used more frequently, and I think that subtracts from the game.
Edited for clarity

Units that are "strong on paper" NEVER work, that's why dungeon units generally suck.
thats bull snow strog on paper like wrths rock coz there stats are really good witch is why they are good on paper and some dogeon creaturs( like assains, fures and monarchs) used in a good combo can kick ass

If any of you have played disciples 2 or other fantasy games you would know the role of zombies in general and that is:
A basic undead meat shield that's tough to kill, slow and can be a serious hazzard if you get too close. They must be something you'd want to kill from afar as soon as possible. In titan quest there are some plagued zombies that diminish into a poision (plague cloud) when they die and I think that's a brilliant idea. I don't agree with making them faster, stronger or tougher. Just make whoever is slashing them down easily pay!

Something simple like that is all they need, I agree (like I said earlier) with no stat improvements.

How about just improving the plagued version of the zombie. Whenever an enemy stack that has been infected is killed a percentage of the original number of that stack is converted into plagued zombies that will die/go away (Like gated demons) when the battle ends. If that's too little they could be permanent. I'm suggesting this because it hasn't been mentioned in this thread and it stays true to what being infected by a zombie should do to you.

what about making the zombies ranged units(throw the copping knifes like the orcs in HOMM3??. They don't have great attack or initiative so it's not that overpowering. Plus this gives people a reason to attack them.
Also, please bring back the aging ability for spectre dragon. Right now they are a piece of $$$$ with low everything.

Copping knives? In my HoMM3, the Orcs throw throwing axes.

The idea of a ranged Zombie and a melee Skeleton would, however, greatly ballance the power of the Necropolis.

That would be the whole idea of such a transformation (to make Necros weaker).

Just give Zombies 10,000 HP each and drop their initiative and speed to 1.

Mutant Zombies weren't always weak. They were mighty tough in Heroes 2. 100 of them can actually kill a Black Dragon. And for those who remembered good 'ol days, Black Dragons were itself a 1-unit army.
And temjin, you just never can say anything sensible huh? [sarcasm]Your joke is like, soooo funny. Hur hur.[/sarcasm]

So many interesting ideas!!!
So to summarize them i think there are three realistic options for zombies improvement:
1. Sceletons to become once again pure melee unit and zombies to become range unit, throwing guts, livers, legs or whatever they just don't like in their own bodies;
2. Give them (zombies) some sort of deseace aura, which will make them primary target, and therefore act more appropriate as meatshield
or
3. Give them some ability (like the mentioned above from Titan Quest) that makes them more likely to stay on the battlefield, instead of attracting fire (just imagine, who wants to kill something that makes less troubles when is on the battlefield, than when is dead)
Personally i think that N2 is the most appropriate so far.
After all N1 is just shooting in the dark as to it could make the game more disbalanced then balanced, since it will need to remake the basice necropolis idea and even though number 3 is a good idea i don't think of it as a really proper.
I think this is crying for a voting! Let's make some poll

How about making the Skeletons drop their bows and give the zombies an aura?
