How about a... "Wraiths are more than effective when used in the right situation" option.
They are the only creature besides Pit Lords that are guaranteed to kill at least one creature in an enemy stack. And in doing this they not only receive no retaliation, but they remove all positive magic effects from that stack as well (endurance, haste, righteous might, divine strength - all come to mind.)

I'd like to add that their damage tops emerald dragons and spectrals (even with boosted growth), and is very close to the damage of archangels. Go figure.

Yeah the wraiths may not have an abundance of cool special abilities, but their stats are real solid.

And they are good in the endgame too apart from early game. Not many people think that in a final battle when armies start to decrease Wraiths can cause havoc. It's not so easy to focus on them with all the other tricky necro creatures and even a few of them can keep killing lvl 7 creatures steadily.
If only necro had last stand ability accesible...

4 Wraiths may do more damage than the 2 Emerald Dragons on a 1 attack vs. 1 attack basis. However, do not forget this:
1) The Emerald Dragon has higher Attack.
2) The Emerald Dragon will possibly do an area attack.
3) The Emerald Dragon has much higher initiative - 14 vs. 1 - meaning it will act more often than the Wraith.
4) The Emerald Dragon is a flyer, and has a movement of 9 as opposed to the Wraith's 6.
5) The Emerald Dragon has twice as many Hit Points meaning it will be tougher to kill off the first. In fact, if you start off with 4 Wraiths as compared to 2 Emerald Dragons, the first Wraith will die at 100 damage, leaving you with only 3 Wraiths. The second Wraith will die at 200 damage, which is where the first Emerald Dragon will perish. Thus, you will not be able to deal 4 x damage with Wraiths for the same amount of time that you will be able to deal 2 x Damage with Emerald Dragons.
So - does this make the Wraith better than the Emerald Dragon? I'd deffinitely say no!

Why would you attack 2 Emerald Dragons with 4 Wraiths using melee and not Harm Touch (no retaliation.) 2 Emerald Dragons cannot kill 4 Wraiths in the next round, but the Wraiths can finish off that last Emerald Dragon again. I guess you overlooked that ability.

Well, I didn't - but in order to evaluate which creature is best, you cannot simply look at the 4 Wraiths vs. 2 Emerald Dragons case. You have to consider any ratio 4:2 incidence - say, 40 Wraiths vs. 20 Emerald Dragons or 400 Wraiths vs. 200 Emerald Dragons. Thus, I didn't mention the Harm Touch ability, because except for the case where you have very few Wraiths (and very few opponents) it'll be quite useless.

But usually you have like 5 emerald dragons and 10 wraiths.. then harm touch comes into play.

Usually you'll have like 5 Emerald Dragons, 10 Wraiths and 2000 Skeleton Archers.
Anyway - 10 Wraiths will do more damage on average with melee attack than the Harm Touch (10 x 27.5 would give 275 damage not counting modifiers). Of course, there's always the question of retaliation.

Not necessarily in the end, if they start dying... that's when Harm Touch is nice to have.

I always thought it's be fun to give all creatures but wraiths to another hero, then use 7 stacks of 1 wraith each to take out a group of 7 dragons.

Umm...
You can't place 7 separate Wraiths on the battle field. They're large creatures.

In the academy campaign those stupid wraiths kept killing my Zehir's summoned phoenix with their harm touch before it had time to act.

Quote: I don't really see why Wraiths are underpowered... Undead means they're immune to all mind spells and negative morale and are permanently raised by the Raise Dead spell, they can dispel all positive enchantments on a creature, and have the highest attack and base damage rating of all the lvl. 6 creatures. And contrary to Rakshasa's, Treants and Pit Lords they actually boast a decent initiative so they can act more than once a year (although in the case of the Rakshasa it can be fixed with initiative boosting mini artifacts and Dash). Sure, I'd also have liked Vorpal Blade on them (fits them better too IMO) but we can't have everything right?
Quoted from myself in the "why can't Wraiths fly?" topic.

Don't dis Wraiths.
Besides them, what other unit is going to do heavy damage? Your dragons (upgraded or no) are not even better than Treants. Harm touch, under all circumstances, is awesome. Ungodly Phoenix on your screen? No problem!
They are incredibly tough and have high damage potential. Besides your vampires, they are your heavy-hitting melee.
