Correction. I didn't mean Wanderlei Silva, he who is a light heavyweight and a bloody mess in one of the previous pics.

I actually meant to say Sylvia, as in Tim Sylvia, the current heavyweight champion in the UFC.

Believe it or not, but Mirko is a pretty funny guy, but then again so is Barnett. After he lost the finals to Mirko, Josh begun his interview, face all puffed and swollen, with "I'm not an animal" :-) - Elephant Man movie of course.

So do I, but the truth is that best UFC fighters are simply not good enough for the best PRIDE fighters. There, I said it. Shogun,Arona and Silva would dominate any MHW, same as Fedor and CroCop would do it in HW. Through much of UFC history there has been a large number of suspicious quality fighters, not to mention those who came totally unprepared, which can hardly be said for PRIDE. And it's not a wonder if you bare in mind bigger pool from which it recruits fighters, better bucks and bigger popularity of the later. NHF UFC fans.

Actually Silva came 4 pounds heavier than Mirko.
Mirko "CroCop" is usually about 230, and the current PRIDE's Middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva is usually 205 lb, which is the upper limit for that division. However in open weight tournament Silva came heavier then usually, and fought heavyweights in dominating fashion. That is until lighter Mirko came.

After the PRIDE Final Conflict Absolute half-final weighing (09/10/2006) CroCop said:

I am not advocating here that you or anyone should not back out to a 40 pounds heavier guy, it's just that it is so much more in a fighting game than body weight, or pure physical strength. Especially so with top fighters. Not to mention that body definition and voluminousness of muscles has almost nothing to do even with shear strength and level of fitness.

I would thus rate conditions for being a top fighter:

1. Skill in the fighting style that fighter prefers (Submission, Kickboxing, etc). Fighter needs to excel in his first martial art, no matter which one is that. Mark Kerr is a top wrestler, Fedor is a top Sambo fighter, CroCop kickboxer.

2. All around skill - fighter needs to be at least on familiar terms with all aspects of the fighting game. You can not be just top wrestler and expect not to be submitted by a Sambo artist or not to have your leg kicked into oblivion by a Muay Thai fighter.

3. Explosive strength - you know the kind, the one in which throwing athletes(javelin throw,shot put) and sprinters excel. The ability to explode and blitz your opponent. Vittor Belfort has great explosive strength and so does Andre Agassi and Goran Ivanisevic.

4. Aerobic strength - the one which allows you to endure in long lasting matches - cardio. Marathon runners love that one. Frank Shamrock, Minotauro and Shogun are powerhouses when it comes to cardio. It's the strength that is easiest to loose if out of training.

5. Mental strength - To know how to control and feed yourself with emotions like fear, and not to be overwhelmed and eaten alive by it. I'd say Silva was eaten alive with his fear of CroCop. CroCop was afraid of Bob "The Beast" Sapp, but he utilized that fear. Fear and adrenaline which it produces allows you to perform physical actions that you are normally not able to do. Like the people walking away from a crash site with both legs broken. Sick...

6. Limit strength - the one people usually refer to when they think about physical strength. Bob Sapp,Tank Abbott come into mind. Important, but I still rate it last.
