Poll Question: Bad bad bad HOMM fans!
I read topics in this forum and sometimes I get a feeling that most of you use cheats in one way or another. It seems that sometimes situations come up then there is only one way - to cheat. Example: poor boy can't find shackles of war and AI always runs away - put a cheat on and here you go...
I even heard stories then people cheat against AI players adding 1000 angels to their armies. Then smashing everything in their way. Where is the fun in here? Maybe that is exactly the case that makes AI run away before the battle starts?
I personally haven't used any cheats in any PC game. I consider it as a weakness of a player. Sometimes I used to replay some hard part of the game for 100 times but NEVER cheated.
Although there is one case then I approve cheating. Cheating for the sake of the science and experiments with the game. Of course after that showing the results for public in forums
What do you personally think of cheating in HOMM?

if i actually cared about how other people spend their time i probably would have made the same post you did.
i think cheats stink... i either finmish it legitimately, or i dont finish it. cheats make me feel dumb.
FOR EXAMPLE: theres a cheat to bring your player in baulders game up to 25 stats in everything instantly. but you can do it legitimately by finishing the entire game 6 times to collect all the tomes and level up that way, importing your charecter over and over...guess what i did, because i though cheating was lame, and you didnt deserve the level ups if you did it.
EDIT: i had a LOT of spare time, CMON IT WAS THE HOLIDAYS!!!

No, I don't ever cheat. I do the opposite by cranking difficulty to the highest it can possibly go. That being said...
If the cheating is in MP and it's affecting you, I can understand. If people are playing singleplayer at home on their own, who are you or anyone else to tell them how they should enjoy their hard-earned cash? What isn't fun for you may be fun for a lot of other people out there.

Pre-expansion BG2 (when mages were capped at 17) was awesome! It took me 5 hours to figure out the Staff of the Magi fight with my solo mage. Ahh... good times...

That's why this post was made like a poll and not some ultimatum. Btw I do the same - put difficulty on max and only then enjoy it. Crazy example: I have heard that some dude finished Quake or Doom with only malee weapon

In multiplayer games, it's a total no-go. Never. You don't cheat on a computer generated bunch of pixels, you cheat on another human being (or more than one) if you do so. Of course it becomes a rather grey area when that other human is also cheating, but I digress ...
In single player games, I play for fun. I want games to be doable, without it being a cake-walk. Good games distinguish themselves from bad games by how they integrate that difficulty in the game. I abhor it when a game AI is obviously cheating, flaunting it in your face as you go ... but I don't usually play such games for long.
On the concept of cheating, I usually try to go without. But, being a control-freak and a perfectionist in nature, I do wish to get the fullest out of the maps I play, explore every nook and cranny to see if there's anything worthwhile. Annoys me greatly when certain areas remain inaccessible ... so yes, I sometimes use cheats to reveal the map and such, just to see if I am not missing anything. Essentially, it's just to gain knowledge, I usually load a save game after where the map is still covered (so for instance I don't see enemy movement).
Once I've finished a game once, I am more open about cheat codes, as I know what I can expect - and how cheat codes can affect the difficulty of the game. Just for fun and to check the different possibilities (I guess this covers the exploration for science ), I occasionally use cheat codes.
I very rarely use cheat codes to bypass content I deem too hard. One particular instance that comes to mind are a few of the final missions in Star Craft Brood War (mission where you had to kill 50 scientists, and a mission where you had to overrun a Protoss base in under 20 minutes). But at those moments, fun turns to aggravation, really ...

Hehehehehehe... I've cheated a few times.
I've installed a mod for Jagged Alliance 2 that fills every sector with 32 enemies in addition to what you already have to fight I got sick of flying through the game on hard difficulty without getting a scratch most of the time.
I hex edited Imperium Galactica several times to try to make it more difficult for me in the later stages of the game, but the AI didn't make good use of the advantages I gave them
Oh, and I hex edited my save in Titan's Quest because I've accidentally put my skill points in mana as opposed to strength

Just to add a note: cheats (published in the cheating guide on AoH for example) are not only cheats!
They are also the lua commands you will use for scripting your maps, that is if you create some. Mastering the "cheats" will allow you to make inventive scripts in your maps.
As for my answer here ("I cheat only for the sake of science"): there is a lot of information in the manual(s) that I was only able to find or check because of these lua commands.

only someone obnoxious would complain about people cheating in SP... here it really just DOES NOT MATTER...
In MP, of course, I'm against cheating. It's lame.

What are games for? to play them and have fun.
What are cheats for? to finish playing and end the fun.
Pretty obvious to me

Once, to amuse myself on a HOMM2 scenario that was excruiatingly poorly done (Alice in Wonderland - hero stuck in one place for days, no action, no interaction, no terrain of interest) I went into the map editor and gave the starting hero a powerful army and went through the offending scenario in five minutes as a joke.
But I would never dream of cheating on game - in fact the day I learned there were "cheats" on a website, I clicked off and decided to ignore it. For a player like me up against the AI all the time, the only thing driving the excitement and events in a game are my own skills. Cheating would ruin it and the excitement and interest would be gone.
For "science", someone said there was a way of setting skill paths and I wouldn't mind seeing how that played out. After all, you're still working to earn it. (I just don't relish busting my behind to learn "scouting" lol, although I don't mean to offend any big scouting fans out there...)
I guess it's the thrill of the chase...keeping the mystery alive.

Why do you even care?As long as they are not used to beat a human player everyone has the right to exploit them as he sees fit.Personally I use them after I have finished a game and know how fulfilling they can be.If you don't know the dirty little secrets of the game how can you claim to have experienced every part of it?Also I have come across games that I don't desire to beat because I simply don't care to(as was winds of war) and use cheats just to see the end.Having done that I see there would be no point finishing the game bacause it was UTTER CRAP!And noone can doubt my perseverance since I have been stuck for a week in Syberia 2 without using the walkthrough, ultimately reaching the end on my own.Still when I played Paradise I found it pretty pointless wasting my time pixel hunting. You can visit a pool from 5(!) screens but you can only get water from the right spot.Right..I have no regrets. Those who are anti-cheaters are clueless and just hide behind a rigid almost fanatical morality.I must say however that I agree with the first post,to cheat against the Ai is pathetic no matter how good it is.

The only cheat I ever used was "reveal map" cheat and usually only one when playing new map, just to see the layout.
Of course, it's not used during the playing.

I'm not quite sure how adeventure games got into it. Cheating in an adventure game is fine because its about story. A puzzle game you probably don't want to cheat. To each his/her own.
Concerning Heroes games I rarely cheat. Still it was fun in Heroes 2 to set up a map that was a battle between titans and dragons to see who would win!
Of course such things are necessary to play test. Goes without needing to be said.

I think this thread wasnt meant to be ressurected.
I do cheat when its too damn hard. More often for exploring a bit or having fun (Like in medieval 2 total war, Excessively typing vindaloo to get the most maddening weapon in the game ever made) but some times when its extremely hard i cheat. Like HOF campaign 2 mission 5. I beat it again later with draco-geddon but for the most part without some kind of intensely focused strategy like that its too damn hard.
