my thoughts on new town types.
For me the most enjoyable and important aspect of the heroes of might and magic series has been the towns. Creatures, structures, hero types all the essential parts of HOMM have their beginnings from the towns so much so that without towns there would be no heroes.
I for one have thoroughly enjoyed watching the development and additions of towns from HOMM1 to HOMM3, and am fully looking forward ti more new towns in HOMM4.
Though wanting to see more new towns, creatures and heroes, I think that since towns are so important to HOMM we should also pay special detail to the towns as one glitch here could throw the whole game into a state of imbalance.
Another point: Given time most of us can come out with ideas for 101 types of castles based on various categories.. even down to what structures they should have and what the complete town should look like. We can have castle types based on
1) creature types: Constructs, lycanthropes, fairies, humans,
2) terrain types: snow, desert, plains, settled land
3) periods in time of earths history: norse , greeks, eygptians , chinese.
Or even all 3, though this would mean a heck of a lot of work thinking up heroes, creatures and structures for the various towns.
I was wondering whether a poll regarding how to categorize towns might be appropriate or too late to at least get some semblance of order into the chaos of the various towns which we have conjured up. If so , apart from the above 3 categories how else would you like town types categorized.

My thoughts.
Mr_Shane, you suggested some options, and its quite hard to choose one, so I prefer all of them, some towns will be a civilization (Egyptian, Japanese), some will be terrain and civilization together (Egypt, Ice-Viking casle), and some will be made of a creature type (Astral town, Necropolis, Inferno), so there shouldn't be specific categories fro towns.

Yeah no specific categories for towns, the existing feature is cool in heroes3, dividin them according to their alingment to good, neutral and evil.
I would like to see more towns cuz it is the most beafutiful thing in heroes, to develop towns and combine them, a lot of fun...

Towns
For all you who have town ideas i suggest u make at least 9 creatures for each town suggestion. just in case.
Also i think the highest level unit should embody the concept of the town.
ie)Angel represents good and holy castle.
Behemoth represents attack strength of barbarians.
Hydras represent good defensive skills(no retaliation)
etc.
Leave stats out of suggestions (3do will take care of that).

Highest level.
The highest level units should be 7 because there will be enought units anyway because each level will have 3-4 evolutions.

why i brought up the topic on categories for town types is
1) to suggest new ideas for towns
2) I was wondering about the possibility of towns in the "Period of history categories" in an expansion or add-on pack.
Personally i would not mind about whatever towns 3DO gives us in HOMM4. But i feel that in enroth/erathia/jademe the focus seems more to be on racial warfare.
The human and their woodland and magical allies vs the evil undead/ denizens of the underworld and demons with the humanoids from the wasteland and the swamps as neutrals. and somehow i can't visualise how those "period towns" would fit in, would they be classified as good or evil?
One way I can think of would be to have a "good" town and an "evil" town for each of these town periods, another option maybe a town with two different building paths, one following a good path and one an evil path, or maybe i am simply rambling away LOL

theme?
I for one have always found the might and magic theme very unimportant and not all that noticeable either. I wouldn't mind if in homm4 they left all of the factions or theme concepts out and simply went with different town types. Lets make the game a strategy war game that can be anything, a versatile fantasy war game open to interpretation.
This way you can simply make your towns and what/who is in them withour worrying about the rest. Like some that are more humanoid, others more fantasy.

I agree
I agree as long as they don't get futuristic, keep it ancient.

And keep it out of the way of history.
I have no interest in playing our own history. Meaning as long as they dont call it Japan, Greek, American or anything to that extend.

Im in total agreement with you Mr_Shane
"The human and their woodland and magical allies vs the evil undead/ denizens of the underworld and demons with the humanoids from the wasteland and the swamps as neutrals. and somehow i can't visualise how those "period towns" would fit in, would they be classified as good or evil?"
Heroes4 is going to be apart of the Heroes series so for pluvious to say
"I for one have always found the might and magic theme very unimportant and not all that noticeable either. I wouldn't mind if in homm4 they left all of the factions or theme concepts out and simply went with different town types. Lets make the game a strategy war game that can be anything, a versatile fantasy war game open to interpretation."
Then it would have nothing at all to do with the history of heroes1,2,3. What you seem to be suggesting is not heroes4 but a totally different game! Heroes 4 should continue where the third one left of and i have no idea how they could add in so much new towns with out taking it in a completely different direction. I actually liked the setting for Heroes thats why i bought heroes1,2,3 and all the expansions. Theres lots of other games that have ancient settings in them this is not one of them this is much more fantasy to me.
