Here's an article

"Queenslander's lost a mate today"

A quote from a member of the public on the radio as I was driving home. So true.  I found out while in a classroom, we were in a computer lab and it was all over the internet.  A student told me, and I got that feeling of shock and disbelief.  His wife is in another state and it is still unknown if she has heard the news.

He was an amazing ambassador for Queensland, and Australia, and animal protection agencies throughout the world and his death will be felt my many.  The people that I know who worked for him at his zoo, said he was an inspiring boss, who always had time to explain things and understand them.  He embraced each day with a genuine appreciation of each moment.  He will never be forgotten.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.

Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its website.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane.

Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef but refused to say who the victim was until relatives had been notified.

A rescue helicopter was sent from the nearby city of Cairns, and paramedics from it confirmed the diver's death.

"The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest," Hamil said.

Staff at Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, said they had heard the reports but could not comment.

Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!" in his television program Crocodile Hunter, which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.

He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.

Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his 1-year-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other.

Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations.

Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken.

Irwin was also seen as a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections.

Irwin told the Australian television program A Current Affair that "killing one of our beautiful animals in the name of trophy hunting will have a very negative impact on tourism, which scares the living daylights out of me."

He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Oregon, and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.

You were amazing Steve, I loved watching your shows and I think you are a quite funny and remarkable person.
But for me Steve wont die, and it is almost like Ned Kelly.
He isnt dead, because his spirit and all that still lives, and that is what it is like for me regarding Steve Irwin.
His spirit will live on for a long time.
RIP Steve

At least he died doing what he loved, rather than old and ragged in a hospital bed somewhere.

But yes..this is truly sad.

It is tragic that he died, and I will miss seeing him on screen. He knew how to entertain a crowd, and he was very fearless.

But it's just like the man who was living with wild bears and was eaten by his own "friends", people that choose to do things that are dangerous, especially with wild animals that are never really tamed, carry the risk.

If you really think about it though... isn't that one of the worst times to die?  Wouldn't you rather die when you're suffering so that it would all end?

It is a very sad event.  Steve, you will be greatly missed by many.

DEATH TO ALL STINGRAYS!

Sorry, I couldn't resist...but seriously, I remember watching "The Crocodile Hunter" religously 4-6 years ago and was always as amazed by Steve Irwin, as the creatures that were featured on the show.

He truly had a gift with misunderstood animals and I'm sure that his death has occured for a reason. What that reason might be, we'll each have to search within ourselves to find it, and hopefully, it will let us come to peace with what has happened.

You ma boy, Steve Irwin!

He seemed nice the poor guy. I hope it went quickly so he didnt have to go the the whole awarness of his dying. But the guy played with dangerous things, and it would be logical to say it was a likely end to his path of danger.

I hope if theres a heaven he is there

He was great at raising public awarness about endangered species and dangerous animals, and his shows were all great. Plus, he was a real fun guy.

It's really sad that he died, but at least he died doing what he loved most. Such an amazing life should not end in another way. I'll miss him.

I wasn't going to post here, mainly because it all makes me so sad - and to be honest I'm really surprised at just how much it upset me.

When I first heard the news my reaction was just to be annoyed - I have heard so many rumours about him dying over the years that I thought it was just another sick joke.

I don't know how many times he made me laugh til I cried. I can think of so many shows - one in particular, he was doing on these great big dragon things (name escapes me). Anyways, there he is creeping through the thicket telling the camera how these creatures don't see or hear especially well - but they rely on their keen sense of smell, and they can detect blood very quickly. Then suddenly he exclaims "Crikey! My leg", the camera pans down and shows that he's scratched his calf on the thicket and there's this drop of blood running down his leg. Then off he goes running over to some trees which he quickly climbs while those things are coming after him.

If it weren't for him I never would have learnt the word Crikey (which apparently I pronounce croy-key... don't ask )

It was so nice to watch him and see that people can live their lives doing something they truly love - what a blessing Plus he was maybe the craziest guy I've ever seen on TV - and I don't know how anyone could not love him.

I really thought he was invincible
