Death of an Icon
Staring into the wide eyed face of a 15 year old young man telling me that Steve Erwin was dead was a moment I will never forget. His face was captured by my grey matter and is recorded in my memory along with that feeling of shock, deisbelief and emptiness that came with the news.
It is a shallower feeling then the loss and grief of a loved one, but it is a type of grief in itself. It is remarkable that we can be moved by the death of someone we never really met.
I have had this feeling twice before in my life. I can still smell the air and see the moment when Princess Di died. The other is Kurt Cobain.
Princess Di I was visiting my mum and was walking down the stairs when she came out of the study and told me - I can see it, and feel it. When Kurt died I was at a BBQ with friends and we were sitting on the roof of their apartment when we heard it on the radio.
When Michael Hutchence died, I did not get quite the same affect.
Have the death of any Icons affected you this way, and what were you doing at the time?
btw I started this to keep Steve's thread to himself

I was in that state just before falling asleep, more asleep than awake. My gf's mother opens the door with the news, John Lennon is dead. In my half asleep state, my initial reaction was, OK, thanks for the info. Then a second later it hit me, John Lennon is dead. Then blank. John Lennon is dead. The person who was John Lennon was dead. The Beatles are dead. A major icon from the 60s and 70s was dead. The signs had long been there, everyone already knew it, but now, there is no more denying it, an entire era was dead, never to return. John Lennon was dead
RI Peace John
Long live John Lennon.

I got a few of them.
Some I remember.
Steve irwin.
It was shocking but in ways I think we all seen it coming.
Just happened to be today.
He cared about animals & taught many about life.
He was a brave guy.
He loved it too but he had more balls then most I knew.
I always watched his shows on the Discovery Channell when i had the chance.
I never want to see his movie again though
Reggie White (American Football Player)
He was one of the best QB sackers of all time but also one of the nicest guys you can meet who was as religious as much as he loved his friends & family.
It was bad to see him go too young.
John Ritter (COmic/Tv Sitcoms)
That was a funny guy who always loved to make people laugh.
It made him feel good to see others laugh & one of the most caring person you would meet.
Another one who died way too young.
Carroll O Conner (sitcom)
ALways one of my fav since the tv show All in the Family.
Just like herman Shemley they are totally oposites then who they portrayed in thier characters.
I remembered Carroll changing when he lost his son & effected him since.
I always going to love Archie Bunker lol.
Freddie Mercury (Muscician)
That guy can sing & I always listened to alot of his music.
It came out of no where when he died of aids & many missed him when he passed away.
Some I felt even if I was not around or too young to remember.
People I always liked.
Marvin Gaye (Muscician)
He was a religious person as much as a great singer & i loved basically all his music.
It was sad to hear how his father murdered him while he was a religious person himself.
Harry CHapin(Muscician)
Raw talent who would of gone places & wrote one of my favorite songs I ever heard (Cats in the Cradle)
Unfortunately he died too young.
Jom Croce (Muscician) I loved alot of music he made & many I still listen to all the time.
He made many songs that some may know if they heard it, but not in certain countries.
Another victim who was in the top of his prime but died early.
Bobby Darin(muscician)
He was the kind of person who lived life to the fullest & always was in good spirits, even when people mention about his heart problem.
Knowing he would not live long, he always followed his dreams.
Sang some songs like Beyond the Sea,SPlish Splash etc.
Hde died too young but he lived life to the fullest & never had a egative thought.
Ricky nelson (Muscician)
One of my all time favorite singers.
I love all his music & has a great voice.
I womans crush to all.
I felt when he died in 85 leaving behind 4 children in a plane crash.
He was way too young also & made alot of great music yall can enjoy.
Last one my favorite.
John Lennon(Muscician among other thangs)
Beatles one of my favorite groups & many looked up to him during the 70's about peace, war & freedom.
His music eas an interesting as he was.
It is still sad to this day when you think hes not here.
Depends on whos side your on.
Usually there is only liking the Beatles or hating them, usually no little bit of liking.
I still love his music & he was not done yet, left many promos & unfinished work.
SOmetimes people make a name by assacinating a celebrity being a crazed fan.
Too unfortunate.
Cant think of any more lol.

For Me . . .
It was Princess Diana. When I heard the news I immediately felt that the Brits were in for a new dark age of suppressed child pain in her two boys. When they get older, I worry they will have forgotten the one thing all mothers give to their sons: compassion

I dont think you would need to mention family.
Family should always been somekind of idol when they die.
Personal feelings that others can or can not understand.

One person's death who saddened me was Chris Farley, the exuberant SNL member turned movie regular. It wasn't quite as bad though because pretty much everybody knew it was coming the way he was constantly abusing his health.
I remember the day of Princess Diana's death which is funny because I really didn't have any emotion vested in her at all. I mean I thought she was just kind of an empty bobble. It was really amazing the way everybody was carrying on about her and stocking up and hoarding Dianabilia. whatever.
Prolly the death that affected me most even though I wasn't there was Bruce Lee. He was an amazingly talented and dedicated person who was cut down before his greatest accomplishments I believe.

Because in Kookie's first post she wrote Quote: It is a shallower feeling then the loss and grief of a loved one, but it is a type of grief in itself. It is remarkable that we can be moved by the death of someone we never really met.
This thread is about that, not loss of friends and family.
Not that your feelings for your Grandmother aren't real and important, they're just not on this particular topic.

I learned 2 things of interest on the news today:
#1 - Steve Irwin will be buried @ his family's zoo, the Australia Zoo (it used to be his father's zoo, until Steve took it over and changed the name to what it is today).
#2- On a seperate Icon subject, the new Pope recently chastised the Canadian government for allowing same-sex marriages and abortions. This made me think of John Paul II and how he his manner in being the Pope focused more on the positive messages of Christianity (i.e. love, peace, equality, etc.) instead of reminding all of its followers of the religion's rules & sins (i.e. homosexuality, abstinance, etc.)
I think that if the current Pope continues on his path of scolding all Christians & various nations for their policies, when he dies, it will not impact the world nearly as much as John Paul II's death did. Although I am no longer a "Catholic" or "Christian" myself, I can gladly say that the way John Paul II behaved, treated others, and carried himself; made him a true Icon in my eyes.
