Creature Origins...
Many of the creatures appearing in HoMM come from Greek Mythology...
Hydra, Centaur, Harpy, Medusa, Minotaur, Phoenix, Titan, Giant, Cerberus...
Do you know where the other creatures come from?

I think that the Genie, the Efreet and the Roc are from the Arabic mythology and the Naga - from the Indian mythology. According to Incubus, the Wyvern is from the English mythology. And about the Cyclopes... They exist in the Greek mythology, too.

I think humans appear in every mythology plus the bible. And you can find them in the real world! I won't tell you to look into the mirror to find one because some of use aren't people. Some of us are dwaves (me!), dragons, titans, devils, demons(the incubus is a demon. But Inky already left!)... So look out the window.

Dwarves are from Norse mythology, and Giants are from almost everywhere, Serbian mythology, Norse mythology, you name it. Every culture had their own giant. Same with dragons, dragons are found all over the world. Elves of course are European, and so are pixies and sprites. Pegasi are greek, and there are also chinese phoenix's and unicorns.

Incubus told me manticores was specially created (magically?) to kill non-evil dragons. That's why I gave manticores that speciallity in one of my towns... But I don't know where they are from...

Yes, but i don't think they were bulls. It seems as though they were ladies who turned you to stone or something.

Hmm... I think that Medusas and Gorgons should be one and the same thing. I don't know how it's spelled in English, but let's assume that the name of the Medusa was Gorgo. So the designers of HoMM3 didn't know what to do - what to be the 5th level creature from the Fortress town. Maybe they had ideas about an evil cow but the name Evil Cow didn't sound well... So they decided to pick the name of one of the Medusas and claim the Gorgons to be a different creature. But both the Medusa and the Gorgon have a specialty with their stare. In order to differenciate the two the Medusa petrifies and the Gorgon kills...
So now we know what do the designers do when they have a creative problem...

Gorgons are witches turned into bulls. They have to look down all the time, cause when they look up, they will kill what they look at (10% death stare)... And I'm pretty sure they are greek.
I looked in the American Heritage Dictionary:
Gor·gon
1. Gk. Myth. Any of the three sisters Stheno, Euryale, and the mortal Medusa who had snakes for hair and eyes if looked into turned the beholder into stone.
2. gorgon A repulsively ugly or terrifying woman.
[ME < Lat. Gorgo < Gk. Gorgo < gorgos, terrible.]

check this out
http://www.loggia.com/myth/gorgons.html
somewhere else i found this
The Medusa was one of the three Gorgon sisters. They were monsters who lived on an island, who were known far and wide because of their deadly power. They had tusks like boars, protruding tongue, thick dragon scales, hands of brass, wings of gold, and a face so ugly that all who looked at it were turned to stone. Medusa was distinguishable from the others because she had snakes for hair. Medusa had been beautiful in her youth, especially her hair, but had lain with Poseidon in the temple of Athene. For punishment, Athene had cursed Medusa to look as she does. She was the daughter of Phorcys who had offended Athene by leading the Libyans of Lake Tritonis in battle.
