I dont find that PI-info very usefull. It dosent bring anything. Orrin, ranked 4th, has lost more games than he has won. That dosent exactly indicate that he is strong.

it indicates that Castle is strong on popular templates and that Orrin is one of the best Castle heroes. However if Tazar of Crag will come in tavern - then they are better choice as far as they have better win/loss numbers If we count only win/loss then some stupid heroes with 3 wins and 1 loss will be at the top

9/10 times or dare i say 10/10 times, more than the hero or town, its the players which matter. If a player does not know how to use the town or temp well, then it will not matter if you have craig or orin or who ever for that matter! Although it is not bad work sergie on collecting stats as such .

normally we speak about Shadow of Death version. So, only Neela is better choice than Dace from Tower heroes imho...there is no big difference in SOD for creature specialists and i'm sure that Dace will have better skill set than naga specialist nage specialist will give +1 speed and +2 attack/+2 attackto to naga only, however Dace's expert Offence will give 30% attack bonus to all troops, that's huge advantage

I think the best "starting" heroes are different from the best heroes overall.

A good starting hero is a hero which helps you a lot in the beginning, no matter what kind of map/template you play.

If you play a tough map (poor in resources and guards everywhere), then you need a hero which either comes a long with a bunch full of low level troops early, or with some high level troops, so you are able to fight for gold/resources from day 1.
There are a few heroes who belong to such a category (no specific order):

1. Gurnisson
4 attack and a 250 hp Balista is a great army on early days. You can kill hordes of non-shooters without any losses, and level up pretty fast that way. With expert artillery and a few gobs/wolves, he cleans a lot of the map.

2. Ivor
A pack of Grandelves day 2 + lots of centaurs makes a very strong combo. Archery even raises his power from day 1.

3. Shakti
A throng of infernal troglodytes day 1 is probably the strongest army you can have day 1. Additional help is his "tactics" skill, which makes very tough fights possibel, with minimal losses (a small conservatory is no deal for Shakti day 1, and imagine you have 1 angel as bonus from the very start of the game..)

4. Gretchin
Even though, goblins are a bit weak, 60-80 of them can be a threat for a lot of neutral stacks on the map. If u play a template where big treasure areas are present, her starting "pathfinding" skill will be very usefull.

5. Bron
Up to 7 basilisks from day 1! Besides the gnolls and flies he probably brings a long aswell, you can handle the first days/week without any supporting army from your hometown.

6. Valeska
She is a typical starting hero, but rarely a main. She brings up to 18 additional archers to your army day 1. If archers are prebuilt, you will have 27 of them, and upgrading day 1 (on poor templates) will bring you 27 marksmen. Not bad huh?

7. Galthran
A horde of skeletons with speed 6 on dirt can be a threat. Especially if they become more and more after a fight instead of less..

8. Tyraxor
(Up to) 20 additional wolves, tactics and offense. If that isn't a great start, what else is?

9. Ignatius
Inferno is a pretty weak town early on (esp. on poor maps), but if u have around 100 imps with speed 7 on lava, and tactics, you could handle a lot of fights which would be imposible for any other Inferno hero.

There may be a few more which I didn't mention (Drakon for example, but I found him very unreliable refering to his starting army. I often find him in tavern with less than 20 gnolls!!), but those are the ones I thoguht are the most usefull ones being a starting hero.

Its obvious that the best depends on the situation and the template.

But more or less i agree with angelito with his rankings of the best starting heroes.

Those are the heroes I would prefer as starting heroes when I play a pretty poor template and / or on high difficulty.
Of course there should be listed the "money" heroes aswell, which increase your income, but won't help you winning early fights.

So with "starting" hero, I meant the hero I would chose when game setup is made. And in early fights, when stats are low, the +1 speed to the low level creatures (besides the attack/defense) is a hugh advantage in my opinion. If enough gnolls, Drakon will handle a full crypt week 1 better than Tazar I think. But of course this will change pretty fast when Taz has leveled up.

Best starting heroes imo: If you pick town and hero which hero should you pick with each town.

Castle:
1. Caitlin, 350 gold, your main shouldnt be a knight anyway
2. Lord Hart, needs exp estates to be better than Caitlin, thats rarely possible quickly enough to make him better than Caitlin
3. Valeska, brings in average about 5-6 exstra archers but no pikes, thats nothing special
Mulich, would be the natural choice, but you cant pick him

Rampart:
1. Ivor, Mepha, Kyrre. Ivor is strongest on poor temps like balance where his exstra elvs are very usefull to start with but also in main battle. Mepha and Kyrre are very equal and better than Ivor on richer temps and temps and sizes where you dont meet to early.

Tower:
1. Neela, very strong hero, towers natural choice

Stronghold:
1. Crag Hack, noone comes close
2. Gundula, dosent develope as well as Crag but off specialty rules
Dessa, strong on xl maps, wisdom is often a waiste, but on temps that dosent swim in relics and has some boxes it can be usefull
3. Tyrexor, exstra wolfs and speed to them plus tactics makes him strong against shooters and gives him an early powerstack

Fortress:
1. Taz, noone comes close
2. Alkin, usefull specialty and very good starting skill
3. Broghild, on temps with many hives his specialty is very good, scouting is often pretty usefull and often underestimated

Dungeon:
1. Gunnar, especially strong on xls
2. Shakti, major starting army, usefull specialty early on
3. Deemer, works well as scout, adv scouting is usefull, shower

Inferno:
1. Fiona, scout, exp scouting as lvl 2 is very usefull and dogs secure fast movement for main
2. Marius, is strong when u have a chance to demonfarm,
Pyre can give a fast start with log and balista,
3. Octavia, 350 gold, can be used as main as plan b

Yeah, I agree. Choosing strong/powerful heroes doesn't always mean that you win. Whenever I choose a starting hero, I choose who I feel like choosing and not who I feel has the strongest/best ability. I always end up choosing Isra(Death Knight)though and raise around 50 skeletons per battle.

I know this is a super old thread, but hopefully you don't mind I'm not too great at this game so I wanted to ask some questions rather than share my opinions.

I wanted to preface by saying that I'm not playing 1v1 matches on random maps, but mostly with my friends on fixed maps (L/XL) that tend to be pretty poor in comparison to what I've seen on popular templates. We usually play on 130%. I feel like that makes some heroes with superior early game more valuable. With that in mind, these are my thoughts on some towns and their heroes (hopefully you'll correct or reassure me ):

Stronghold: I know Crag is pretty much the choice competitively, but I wonder which of the other guys is the strongest early - and possibly worth picking to start with and as a main hero.
My bet would be on Gurnisson with his ballista, though his specialty and secondary in ballista gets progressively worse as time passes by.
There's also Gretchin and Tyraxor - Tactics is always useful, while Pathfinding is situational, but which of them has better specialty (Raiders are better than Goblins later, but I think his specialty can sometimes mess up the order in which your units move?) and starting troops?

Inferno: from what I've seen on streams, Marius is usually the pick nowadays in competitive games. But as far as starting power goes, it seems to be between Ignatius and Pyre.
Ignatius should start with above average army I think and with his specialty and Tactics should be able to fare pretty ok in the beginning. He starts with two useful secondaries, but later in the game he basically has no specialty.
Pyre is certainly worse with ballista than Gurnisson (she's no barbarian after all), but I don't really know how well it compares to Ignatius' Imps. So who is better at clearing the map early with little resources - Pyre or Ignatius?
Of course you could always just pick Octavia and try to find a non-native hero in the tavern, but I feel like Demoniacs are solid enough to justify using them as a main. Or do you disagree?

Dungeon: okay, so this is a little different. I know that usually people pick Gunnar or Shakti, but the thing is, I don't really like playing Dungeon as such. What I like about it is its magical side - Warlocks + lvl 5 guild with many offensive spells and in particular the biggest chance for Armageddon + Black Dragons already in place. So if I were to voluntarily play Dungeon, I'd pick a Warlock and plan on using him as my main hero.
Now, the question is - if you want to play that way, is Malekith's specialty and secondary in Sorcery worth it, or is it rather redundant and it's better to pick a more well-rounded Jeddite?
Deemer is also a bit tempting with his Meteor Shower, but I think Scouting is just too bad to pick him for a main.

I know that's quite a bit of text, but if you happen to read it, I'd love to know your opinions! Also any corrections would be great if you think I'm wrong about something - it's never bad to learn.
