I agree with this.
There's this one girl at my school who if you saw like a portrait of her or something in a photo you wouldn't think she was hot, but there's something about the way she talks, acts, and to an extent dresses that makes me keep finding myself attracted to her

To counter your handicap you have to use it, that is, be smart. I have a short recipie that might help.

As a smart person you usually think that people will like you cause your smart. Wrong. They cant see that your smart, so they compare you with others by physical attributes and behaviour. 3. Conquer lots of resources. You cant just build in your castle, you have to conquer the map resources as well. You might lose some army but you will gain exp and more resources, armies grow back in time.
Thats basically it. And remember, a woman usually can have her choice among a few guys, and she usually picks the best one. That means to be picked you have to be the best one among the group of guys that are up for selection.
It's just like winning at h3. If you castle sit thinking about how to win, you will invariably lose. You have to get out there, with your army, and expand your empire by conquering the map and building your hero levels.
Holy crap this is the geekiest explanation ever. Relating life's social challenges to a friggin video game. Well done. Well done.
I do the same thing with Smash Brothers, so it's all good.
Edit: Okay so I forgot to write something here.
Well I can say that I don't really have hardly any experience myself (thank you tech school with no girls), however I can give you some good advice I've received from other people.
1.) Be yourself. Always. Never try to stop being yourself. If you want to say hi, then say hi.
2.) Don't worry about anything. Realize that it's no big deal whatsoever. By not worrying about anything, you will suddenly feel more confident. People always talk about how girls will be more interested if you act like you don't care, because it's no big deal. That's just social confidence and nothing more. This is basically what it boils down to. You don't have to try to be funny. You don't have to try to do anything that isn't yourself.
3.) Be friendly to everyone. Smile, have fun. Make jokes. Do whatever you want. And if they think you are a loser, just laugh at them because they don't get life. I've met some really snowy girls that made fun of my stuttering. I just laughed at her. Brightened up my day.
4.) Put yourself in situations to meet girls. As many as possible. Join clubs, go places, do things where you will be able to meet girls. If you meet lots of girls, you won't feel as worried about failure, because you know you still have another twenty other girls you've met. This is an exaggeration, but if there is only one girl that you knowas well as like, you'll be worried a lot more than if you knew like say 8 girls that you knew and liked.
5.) Do things that make you feel better about yourself. If going to the gym makes you feel better, then do it. If dressing up nicer makes you feel better then do it. These things will make you more attractive to women. Your self-image is the one you project to other people. Granted you do need to have a grasp on reality.
Now to wrap things up. People are attracted to social confidence, because of advice tip number 4. That's it. Nothing more. It's not because women have no self-confidence and blah, blah, blah. That just explains why those particular girls/women are retarded. lol
Anyway I think this is the reason that makes most sense to me. People have lost the truth of mate selection in the game of manipulation that society has created.

The "do not worry about anything" suggestion is so true, but I am SO BAD at it lol I'm very self concious and it gets in the way alot of the time, so when looking for a girlfriend I look for girls who I don't feel like this around.
oh, and btw, alcohol helps with confidence. alot.
