Homm V Random Map Generator

If anyone is interested:
http://129.16.225.87/heroes/homm5rmg-1.0.zip

It has been designed with multiplayer heads-up play in mind, but you should be able to play against the computer as well. A word of advice, create a few maps first and look at them in the map editor before deciding on whether you like the style of maps, and how tough monsters you should pick.

Oh, and read the accompanying README :-)

EDIT:
Updated the link to the latest version, the new version can generate maps for the Hammers of Fate expansion, also it can generate maps for allied and FFA games for up to six players.

ps: any bug reports and constructive critisism are welcome ds

Well.. dunno what you expect. This what you get:

The map generator uses the same algorithm as the HOMM3 RMG, expect it creates only two-player land maps (and lacks some of tables for the visual candy).

Briefly, it works by first creating an abstract representation of the map and how the areas are connected (1). After that, the areas are created and filled with different terrains (2). In the last phase all the objects and guards are placed (3).
1.2.3.

Another example of a created map:

Hopefully someone finds this one useful while waiting for the official RMG. :-)

Actually i tried creating 1 map

And it was great ,really god job ,but one thing that bothered me i didn't see a dragon utopia on that map, that intentionally? was it just on that map  , If dragon utopias are not on rmg i would really like to see you add them..

nevermind,

You were just unlucky, I created a map to check if there was anything wrong with that and got no less than eight utopias on it :-)

They were a bit more uncommon on smaller maps though, I put up a new version where I have tried to tweak that a little.

Speaking of utopias, once you see one it is common to react on them being surrounded by guards - this is because there are eight entrances to an utopia, and each of them must be guarded.

YES! That is what it's made for! :-)

You just need to copy the map to both computers before starting a game.

Great Work!!!!!!!!!!!...

After i read this i reinstalled H5, and even tho i did not have the time to download patches, this rmg rocks

I just finished a good 1v1 vs hard computer.

SO, just for the record, rmg works with 1.0EU (version i currently have)

For those that dont have bandwidth or willpower to download patches (and thus dont have map editor), this is a MUSTHAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I can't believe this

I will try it out immediately, thanks Tapani (which is also my middle name, btw)

Edit. Tried it out. Made a Large map with Very Strong neutrals. Played Heroic and was Academy. I was doing superbly with a level 20 Havez. Until Deidre, my undead opponent breached to the area. A level 27 Deidre, with Expert Attack and Battle Frenzy, Expert Defence and Vitality. Expert Logistics too, and Expert Light Magic (what is it with AI Necro always going for that one) Oh, and a litte 5000 Skeleton Archer army.
And I thought my 300 Master Gremlins was plenty...
So, the zounds of neutrals + Heroic were bit of an advantage to the Necro A good game though. Next time I'll probably chooce less neutrals though..

Heroic effort Tapani, and i can say that without even trying the rmg.

And it makes me think..
Here comes a guy out of nowhere, months after game realease, and throws an h5 rmg on the table which looks at worse case decent.
Well, you get the point- say no more..

Shauku83,

necropolis is overpowered. 5k skeletons is really nothing. In the first game we played on a generated map, I had 65k skeletons somewhere month 2-3... If you allow playing necro, both should be necro. On omfg monster setting, there can be neutrals making a dent even in your skeleton army even when you have 50k skellies.

sphere,

it does not matter where you place the files.

Lokken,

sounds weird. The rmg works by attempting to create a map, and if there are any errors (like it cannot place something or cannot planarize the graph) it just restarts. All I can advice of is to try again, maybe with a poorer richness setting. I'll look into that.

Bug Report:
Had an Alchemist Laboratory placed so it couldn't be reached by a Hero from any angle. Could be an isolated issue with this object, but better check with other objects also.

blubberbo,

don't know. Atm I am waiting to see how the official RMG turns out before doing any major development in this one.

Thanquol,

thank you for spotting that! It was a bug in the generator, causing it to sometimes 'expose' the wrong end of the alchemist lab.

I have updated the linked version to 0.75 where this has been fixed (together with another bug allowing objects to end up on the crag (appearing to be in the water)).

Okies what am i doing wrong here.. I put the file in my
H:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Heros of Magic5\ directory..

When i first ran the program, I got two errors..
1. can not change to drive C:\
2. can't find registration key.. even though it's registered.

Now I never install any program on drive C:\ other than the operating system, which on this system is XP Home.

It did make a XXL map Random Map _T5KP.pak which i changed the extension to Random Map _T5KP.h5m and copied it to my Map directory but Random Map _T5KP.h5m does not show up!
What else do I need to do?

EDIT:: It does open in the map editor though.. and I saved as Random_RPG.h5m and it still does not show up in Create games in H5 with 1.3 patch,

meows,

regarding registry keys
- those depend on which version of the game you have (EU, US, ...). I don't know what the keys are called in many of these versions, and I need to know them in order have the RMG to figure out where to place the map.
This is probably the source to your registry problem.

regarding game not finding the map
- the game scans for new maps only at startup, so restarting the game is the first thing I would recommend. Second, I usually call my maps .pak and place them in the data directory instead of using h5m and the Maps dir. Maybe that helps..?

Good luck,

//Tapani

ps: I'd be happy to include support for other than the EU/E.EU versions of the game, I just need someone to tell me what the registry keys are called.. :-) The EU version uses the key "Software\\Ubisoft\\Heroes of Might and Magic V\\European".

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs\Ubisoft\Heros

Now the registery key that starts the game seems to be
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
and the path shown is
H:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Heroes of Might and Magic V\bin\H5_Game.exe

now under this key is Heros5 the map editor and your program
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache

and then i got this
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ubisoft\Heroes of Might and Magic V\US\Versions    and the data is Heroes5_US_p2
and in it is all 3 patches listed as sub directories.

Well I hope that helps..

PS: I originally had the map in the Data directory On fact it is a rma.pak there and a rma.h5m in the map directory and when I load the game it doesn't show any where,, and yes I have reloaded it many times as I am almost finished with a map i have been making.
