yes, it must be returned, but i don't think to haven. haven has turned into a medieval faction, rather that a renasiance one.

spears, i'd grant you that, but the actual pike didn't come in until the late 1400's in europe. the name pikemen was used in the 1500's to describe the troops using the pikes.
pikes and spears are different things, pikes are often lighter, longer and often have a small blade on the side to slice the long spears in half. spears ranged, from heavy long spears, to small throwing spears (like the dwarves use).

The Pikemen will be a walker and the Spearmen will be a shooter!

aren't spearmen already a shooter, for the fortress?
and what about the long spearmen, or the hoplites in the greek armies. they had long spears, with sheilds, and didn't throw them. are we going to forget them.
genielord, i have been thinking quiet alot about the problem. my solution was the pikeorcs of the stronghold. but, everyone's different.

AJ (I think) said he wanted ways to add creatures in. So here I go.
1. Multiple creatures buyable per level, all buildable. you just have to take the time to build them
2. Random selection
3. Places to trade in units for other units
4. WOGify the maps
5. Castle needs special structure to perform (1)
6. Hero needs special skill to perform (1) or (5)

a place to trade creatures in for other creatures?
that sounds interesting, kind of like a mercenaries guild. you have some universally neutral units and the heroes can trade either gold or creatures for their creatures.
these mercenary creatures could be
lvl1: war hound-> armoured war hound
lvl2: pikemen-> veteran pikemen (thanks Genielord)
lvl3: arbalester-> reaver crossbowman
lvl4: swordsman-> duelist
lvl5: sergent-> captian (mounted on horseback)
lvl6: wyvern-> demidragon
lvl7: hired mage-> hired wizard (mounted on a large reptilian creature)
or something like this

no no no, I meant like a market place where everyone can go.
Say a Necropolis Hero with 3 Wraiths goes to this building. He can trade in the 3 Wraiths for 3 Black knights, though the price is very expensive.

oh, i see, so its a racial spefic creature that can be traded for a creature of the same level.
i was thinking of mercenaries, universal creatures that you can buy/swap at a mercenary guild, which is in all the towns.

No. There could be something were certain factions can trade with some other factions (Elves with Humans, Inferno with Necro, ect) but for the most part it would be just within the race.

I don't agree.
Shadow witches/matriarchs ARE dark elves. Manticores are something else -- as I see dwarves have the most "dwarfish" units in the faction, so maybe add manticores there

huh?...
i don't think that manitcores will go for dungeon or for fortress. they make have in the past but its changed. the Homm3 dungeon was all about the earth and a pell-mell of creatures living underground, whilst the new one is about a refuge for darkelves, rather than a bunch of creatures.
i have never imagined manticores with dwarves... never...

hey I didn't say dwarves need Manticors -- but if it's so utterly important as Baklava said, then at least in my opinion dwarves are the best candidate, though it still sucks in my opinion. (i never like factions, I want races, not factions)

well Manticores would go a lot better with Dungeon than it ever would with Fortress, but thats the best option,
Academy: Wizards, well perhaps, could have made them?
Sylvan: got to be kidding
Haven: no, it needs to be humanish or to do with humans
Fortress: No, miners with a lion, nah
Dungeon: Better, evil as a manticore and needs a good level 6
Inferno: not firey or evil enough
Necro: not been dead before
so maybe wizards, although its to evil for that me thinks, that leaves Dugeon, fair enough

I think the ablity to choose which "lord", which would direct what creature and/or faction-special-ablity-modification would be a possible option. This way could allow 1 to 3 creature to be differnt, with possibly 3 lords per faction. Would see it given the option to choose your lord at begain of the game, and if you do conqure a castle (of same faction), would allow you the option to convert to your lord's creatre line up, or allow it to stay as they are. Could even extend that into other bonues as well (like a Defensive Heaven Lord have all his creature gain +1 Def... things like that)
However, it does make it much like H4 like... but hopefully won't have its folly.
Anyhow.. I guess would also be good to hear what alternative creature line up, or just want creature you would still hope to see/add, for each of the faction. Give it a shot.

why do i have a sudden feeling that Alcibaides is sore about something...
it seems to me that we are, ultimately, reminising about units that we feel should be in certian factions. however, we have been shown that the factions work very well without said units, so we find alternative ways to get them in, through mercenaries, alternative story systems, additional dwellings. its strange how many possiblities the mind comes up with when it sees a small opening, like an expansion!
