Most powerfull spell
To win the battles you must stuff your spell book with all schools of magic.
The spells are a very important weapon to win. In my opinion, the most efficacious spell is the prayer, because increases all unit attributes. And for you??

The most powerful Spell(s)? That's easy.
1. Combat Spell - Mass Slow (Expert Earth Magic)
2. Adventure Spell - Town Portal (Expert Earth Magic)

Well I have some mixed opionions on spells.
When I was new I thought Chain Lightning was the most powerful spell, that is not the case.
Armaggedon used with Black Dragons is a deadly combination.
Mass Slow is also very good, could be good also with Placing Obstacles on the battlefield.
Meteor Shower is good, when all the units are bunched up together, or when they are all bunched together Beserk comes in handy.
Implosion is for power and that can kill the enemy unit's stack quite easily.

Yes but that strikes one enemy creature at a time, you can get some stronger ones that strike multiple enemies and have bigger damage, chain lightning could be one but the damage get's reduced for every enemy unit it strikes.
Armaggedon could be another but that also effects your units aswell, but you can counter that by having some Black Dragons or another spell (forgot what it was, if there is any such thing).

You must be tired. Is anti-magic the spell you are trying to think of? Or better yet, expert Protection from Fire.

As soon as I get the spell of Town Portal, I start wandering the map with my guardian heroes. It helps a lot, because I don't have to worry about my cities any longer.

I think that the dim door combined with town portal is one of the best because then you can sneak past any defence the enemy can think of and virtually bind the enemies strongest troops to his towns. He can never know when you will strike and must protect at all times. With expert air and advanced earth plus a bunch of spellpoints you have a reasonable action radius and can sneak back to your town using town portal to replenish your spellpoints every turn. Of course this strategy cannot be used in early games so it is probably not very good, but IMO it's devastating once you have it.
For battles when you have only a few units, implo or chainlightning is fantastic but if you are stacked with units the simple spells like bless or haste becomes better. Or these combined in prayer as light knight said.
As for spell combos:
Blind + resurrect is a good one too to conserve troops.
mass slow + berserk has been mentioned but is cruel when used. Especially if the opponent has used up his spellpoints and has a really large but somewhat slow moving army.
fire immunity + armageddon would be good but u lose a turn in which your opponent can reach u or use his spells.
Finally I really like to use destroy undead and see them all dwindle down to heaps of ash.
OK I guess I have a lot of favorite spells but my absolute favorite is Town portal and advanced earth, because then you don't need to defend your cities + you don't need to chain heroes to get your troops collected. That means your heroes can do what they should be doing: Exploring and collecting resources instead of sitting in your town being afraid to lose it.

For hero expert town portal and dimension door are excellent. Implosion is powerful spell, but damges only one unit.
I sometimes play Good to Go with Conflux for fun. My fav hero is Brissa. I take only phoenix and psychic elemental.
Dimension door + armageddon, dimension door + armageddon, dimension door + armageddon,... and game is over in 7 days on impossible.
Have you been ever using misfortune or sorrow?

Sorrow can be very helpfull. Makes your fights vs neutral stacks much more predictable.
One of the best spells is forcefield.

I use sorrow frequently to take out neutral walkers. Combined with sprites or harpy hags, it can be used to beat any slow walkers. This is, of course, if you have enough mana.

Yes. Attack a lot of ancient behemoths with an army of marksmen. If one of them gets morale it's over. Sorrow is a spell I rarely use, but it is really good to have it.

Nobody mentioned frenzy. It's very cool spell. With stronghold & crag hack damage is godlike.
Computer is very stupid because it doesn't attack unit with frenzy.
