Thinking about buying HoMM3....(totally new to HoMM)

Hi.  A friend of mine suggested HoMM3, so I checked it out and I'm a little intrigued.

I have some questions before I pick it up:

1) Amazon has two versions of HoMM3 Complete.  As far as I can tell the only difference is one is for XP, the other is for 98.  The XP version, which I would get, is cheaper for some reason.  Anything else I should know about these two versions?

2) For single person play, I prefer playing skirmish matches to campaigns.  Does the game have a random map generator where I can choose my opponent, or do I have to play out the same scenarios every time?

3) Is there any reason not to get the Complete version?  It seems to be only a few dollars more.

4) How is the multiplayer?  Not as important since I don't have much time to play online, but just curious.

Thanks a lot, guys.

No. If u buy Complete for XP, u will be fine.

Heroes Complete has a random map generator and u can play different games every day u like.

The only reason not to buy this awesome game would be the loss of your computer..

It is the same as with the most of all computer games. The computer player isn't very strong. You will be able to beat him on any difficulty when u are more experienced, Multiplayer is a different league. Human opponents are way more challenging...you should try it when u think u get bored of killing the comp on 200% every time..

There are plenty of single missions to play in Heroes III.  Besides you can download many more online.

Once you get the basic mechanics of HoMM3 down, you can then experience the community add-on called "Wake of Gods" or WoG as it's called. This is a fan made add on for HoMM3.

Aha, we caught one, don't let him get away.

Welcome to Heroes 3 fivetiger. This is a homm board so we might be biased, but we think h3 is a great game.

hi fivetiger,

I have been playing h3 for many years, and I never played any campaign. I also don't play multiplayer. I think you will be fine with h3. However, I prefer premade maps.

It is true, an experienced player will always beat the AI, but I have to point out that 3do did a very good job with the AI. It is much better than in any other strategy game I've played. And since the game is quite complex, it will take you some time to become an expert. You will have a lot of fun.

Will the the most recent patches download automatically when I install the game, or will I have to search for them myself?

Read the first post in this thread. It's not only refered to multiplayer, but to singleplayer aswell. It explains how to check your current version and how to patch it (if needed).
If u buy Heroes3 Complete, no patch is needed at all. It will be version 4.0, which is the best u can have.

True. When the difficulty is 130% or above it's not at all easy when your new to the game. It takes quite a while (compared to other games, not like in the old days when computer games were difficult) before you match the AI.

While I wait for the game to arrive, is there an online manual I can read...since I have NO idea how to play the game.  I need the basics.

I thought I found one before, but now I can't seem to find anything like that.

Hmm...5:24 exactly.

Snarl, I was going to give the win to you for having more words...but Angelito took the time to make a link out of the address...Pit fight!

Anyway, feel free point and laugh, but would it be somewhat fair to say that HoMM3 is similar to Civilization except with tactical combat?

See, it would help if my friend gave me a description other than "You walk around and there are towns and you fight things.  It's pretty cool."  I trust his nose for games, though.

Nevermind the questions.  I'm about to find out for myself.  The game arrived today...on the day it was supposed to have shipped.  Good thing I didn't pay extra for fast delivery.

Your friendd also is very good at describing a game in one sentence. That's exactly what it is. Find out the rest for yourself. The more we tell you the faster it is over and the less fun you have.
