This Thread should probably be moved to Modder's Workshop, since it seems to focus more on possibilities for a MOD than ideas for new features - but then, there seems to be like 3 different discussions going on here, so it's a bit hard to say.
First of: I think the purpose of the topic was to come up with new ideas for "Third" (which is in fact Second!) Upgrade for level 7 monsters - so we should discuss only level 7 units (for the others, one should go to the generalized 3rd (sic) upgrade thread ).
Ideas like removing the 1st level units from the town seems completely out of place in this thread and would hugely affect the overall ballance and structure of the game - so I second Baklava and say: No thanx to that idea.
Anyway, my wish list for a 3-tier system for Level 7 units would be as follows (with some suggestions for abilities for new unit):
Haven: Angel > Archangel > Seraph (inspire courage and resurrect twice).
Inferno: Devil > Archdevil > Doomlord (despair and no retaliation).
Necropolis: Bone Dragon > Ghost Dragon > Spectral Dragon (incorporeal and/or aging).
Dungeon: Red Dragon > Scarlet Dragon (level 1-3 immunity) > Black Dragon (level 1-5 immunity).
Sylvan: Topaz Dragon > Emerald Dragon > Saphire Dragon (magic mirror).
Academy: Giant > Titan (shooter, call lightning) > Colossus (shooter, call chainlightning).
Fortress: Fire Dragon > Lava Dragon > Magma Dragon (Ignite).

Ah yes, 15 peasants are really going to help...
About Alc's ideas, great as usual, but:
Incorporeal should be completely excluded from the game, not added to yet another creature, and especially if that creature is level 7. But that's just me. I just hate incorporeal... It's too random and totally based on luck, hence it's generally unfitting for HoMM.
I don't like Topaz dragons' name. I know it's fitting, but it somehow sounds bad.
Just one more technical question: can you add wings to units? Visually.

You are probably right - that is not a good ability to add to a level 7. It just fits so well with the "Spectral" name ... ah well, I guess Aging could give these units a nice boost as well.

Really? I actually love this name - but we could go for Emerald / Saphire / Ruby as well, if that would be better.

He he no - the reason why I want to avoid Ruby is that Ruby is deep red, whereas the colours of the others are yellow, green and blue, respectively - which is much more in line with the Sylvan colour theme I think.

Well if they're going to have red, scarlet and blood dragons, ruby dragons would probably be too much... I mean, more than half dragons would be red... I'm still for jade dragons. Jade as a precious stone was used by many mystical and wise civilizations and I think it would fit well in the elven environment.

Jade is not a precious stone as such. Sure, it's a rare mineral that has a considerable worth - but it's not a precious stone like Emerald or Ruby. I do agree, however, that the number of red dragons would be too high.
We might also just settle for Aquamarine Dragon.

Quote: These gem-dragon ideas aren't really original if you ask me...
Why not add a Morganite Dragon, Heliodoor dragon, Onyx Dragon, Rhodonite Dragon, Phenakiet DRagon and Euklaas Dragon? :-p
Well, if you ask me, there's a time for being orignal, and a time for being conventional. For the Dragons, I prefer to stick to tradition, because the Dragon is such a central creature in the fantasy world.

How about as follows:
Necro: Bone Dragon > Ghost Dragon > Obsidian Dragon
Dungeon: Shadow Dragon > Black Dragon > Amethyst Dragon
Sylvan: Green Dragon > Tree Dragon > Emerald Dragon
Fortress: Fire Dragon > Magma Dragon > Ruby Dragon
Alternativley, we could just have Silver/Gold, Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Diamond/Pearl/Saphire, Ranger, Colosium, and XD.

Ok, to explain: I laugh because that creature is completely and utterly unbalanced! Damage 66-99? Att 42 and Def 40? Dude, we're supposed to make a level 7 creature, not a level 8 - or at least that's what I thought.

almost lvl 8
devil-->archdevil-->hell baron
seraphs, for example, have 50 attack, 50 def, 300 hp, dmg 75-75, ressurects twice.
all those new creatures will be **balanced** among themselves, like in H3 WOG.
thats mods fate - adding more gameplay!

Ah, but that was always a bad idea. Consider for instance this: A map spawns a random level 7 creature to guard, say, a keymaster's tent. There'll be an unreasonable difference between whether it spawns a Devil or a Hell Baron. Even if the Hell Baron spawns in lower numbers, it's still a huge difference.
Anyway, I guess it's just a matter of taste - you can of course aim for the level 8 approach if you favor that. I just didn't get the impression from the thread that that was what one wanted here - but maybe I'm wrong; and I was probably flavoured by the fact that I never liked the level 8 creatures.
