Great Music (both opera and classical)

When I first became involved in the Heroes of Might and Magic series, I was only 12 years old, and ever since the very beginning, the one thing that set it apart from all other games was the music.  While Heroes was a great game in itself, the music (especially in heroes II), was what made it a classic.  Never afraid of including "nerdy" classical and operah pieces in their game in order to involve the gamer and enhance the mood (one of the most important and often overlooked aspects of pc gaming) New World Computing created a game that has been classified as one of the best of all time by a number of publications, and by, most importantly, me and my fellow gamers.  I am writing this message now in an attempt to communicate to the creators of Heroes 4 the huge significance of mood and music in the series (especially in Heroes II and the rampart/necromancer music in III).  May I also suggest that you return to the classic operah days of Heroes II.  By the way, if anybody knows who wrote this music, I would appreciate it if you replied.

Music

I liked the fortress music, but  my favorite is Rampart music. I find it very relaxing. I think dungeon had good music as well as inferno.

Music of the towns...

I agree with you completely!  One of the major things that has set the Heroes series apart from the other games is the music in the towns that set the atmosphere.  Personally, I loved all of the HOMM2 music operas, especially the ones in the Knight and Barbarian castles.  In HOMM 3, I liked the dirge feeling of the necro - it fit the scene, and the rampart's soothing, natural feel.  I liked the tower's music also.

I think that the opera of Heroes should not be sacrificed, but kept as one of the things that sets this game apart... But one request if I may... Let the music fit the scene and feel of the town that it's in...

Yes

My point exactly, Beerbelly!

I've posted a couple of similar threads here and in other forums, and I totally agree with you. The opera music of HOMM II was legendary. It gave life to the game, and a unique mood and atmosphere I sure hope to find again (in HOMM IV, that is). The composer is Paul Romero (says so in the credits (of the manual for HOMM II, and in the credits department in-game for HOMM III)). The music for HOMM II is so good I listen to it all the time, especially while making maps and such.

So Paul Romero, try to recover that HOMM II sound, and Heroes IV will be the greatest game EVER!

Nice thread although....

I'm not sure what percentage of Heroes gamers actually play the game nowadays with the volume turned all the way down, but I think it might be pretty high. I don't know where, but somewhere along the line, I grew annoyed at the repetitiveness of the score and I think I may have turned the music OFF and my speaker volume all the way down and disabled my soundcard as well as pull the speaker cords out of the back of the harddrive, lol!

Recently, I actually went back and played a hotseat game of All For One with a friend as a way of introducing them to Heroes and the first thing he asked for was sound. So I had to figure out how to switch everything back on again and...

wow!

I'd actually forgotten how moody and atmospheric the music actually was! It just added a whole (yet vaguely familiar) new aspect to my multiplaying and brought back familiar memories of when I was just a HoMM beginner trying to pick up the basics of the game. Although I have never heard HoMM2, I am certain that the developers fully understand the importance of sound in their game. It makes things much more dramatic and adds (believe it or not!) pace to battles. There is a sense of urgency with the music on, where as when it's off, you can sit back in complete silence and think out your move without being interrupted.

Only Warcraft and Doom had better music I think and that might just be because I played them a lot more than I did other games. HoMM would have to be very close.

Now where was that speaker wire again...

*smile*

most people who liked H2's music said H3's got repetitive too quickly.

I thinkt hey were just shorter or less complex - but not bad. it's just that you typically play the game for hours in on sitting, so it gets old after a hwile.

...so you gotta replace all of the tracks with Blind Guardian.

(listening to new song "And Then There Was Silence..." right now - wonderful epic)

It's a shame

I really like h3 music and it's great to listen to it while playing. However, I usually have another CD playing for me- Lifehouse most of the times. So, I have forgotten it a bit.

Belly, if you want to know who created the heroes music, read the credit when you go to the main page of the game. It's there. If you want to contact the greenies, then you have to sign in in the 3do comm and hope Maranthea will show up soon.

Heroes 4 Music.....It's Coming...

Hey Guys...Just Thought I would drop by and send a message. This is Rob King and I am the Music and Sound Supervisor for NWC. I have been writing and or producing the HOMM Scores since the first game. I Just finished the mixes up about 2 hours ago for the final Heroes of Might and Magic 4 Music. I have been reading posts and listening to all the fans about the music. All I can say is this game ROCKS! The score is amazing this time around. We used over 30 musicians in the making of the score. My good friend Paul Romero is back at the helm Composing and Conducting again. We have Opera.....Yes, It is back and better than ever my friends. Karin is back (From HOMM2) and we also used Dean from the NYC Opera. We also have a full Women's Choir and tons of string players. Justin only 17yrs old layed down an amazing flute track on The "Academy" Town. For the Adventure themes we went for a total different approach. The entire adventure score is Celtic. Using all live musicians. Bagpipes, Mandolins, Guitars, vocals and a bodhran. The new Combat themes are heavier and more aggressive. I have always been excited to work on these games especially because they are just plain good. I think you will all enjoy this soundtrack as much as I have creating it. I am pushing for a 1 or 2 cd set of "The HOMM Music Collection" to possibly be available down the road. It is always nice to read good things about the HOMM Music and I hope to keep makin' them as long as I can. This one has taken 6 months to do...And the game is in my opinion the best one EVER. Hope you all enjoy. Thanks Again,

Rob King

P.S. For all of you rock and roll lovers... Look for my new CD due out 2nd quarter 2002 on Extasy/Warner Bros. Records. The band is RED DELICIOUS....Sorry, I couldn't resist a shameless promotional plug.
