Disecting the Dungeon...
We have heard about strategies to use certain towns, these threads are for you opinions on the town, it buildings, creatures, and specials.
Dungeon Has a great line up if you throw out the 1st level. Most people don't like the scorpicores and HarpyHags but I love the paralysis and the flying no retailiation. Also the archers don't have melee penalties.
The mana vortex is a must have and is the most useful special building in the game. Add that to the summoning portal to save on trips to the creature generator and you have a very stand up town.

Several Dungeons + a Faerie Dragon lair + way too many Gem Ponds =
Trust me, I found out when a friend did that. 20 Faerie Dragons by the start of month 3. :shudders: That was scary.
Creatures, level by level:
1) Trogs. Not very good, and their special is not important (who'd blind them anyway?).
2) Harpies. These guys are really handy with strike-and-return and no retaliation. One of these can beat a stack of Dendroids, any size, on cursed ground.
3) Evil Eyes. Solid range troop and no penalty in melee make these guys a must.
4) Medusas. Ditto here, plus a nice special.
5) Minotaurs. These guys just plain kick butt! Serious damage, good speed, and excellent attack/defense (better than some level 6s).
6) Scorpicores. Not much better than Minotaurs, although when their special kicks in it can turn the battle.
7) Dragons. Be careful of the breath attack, as I'm sure we've all torched ourselves at least once. But spell immunity, breath attack, and excellent speed make these guys one of the best.
Special buildings:
Portal: Read that story at the beginning. See why the Portal is fun?
Mana Vortex: Refill spell points without spending the night, not to mention double it. One of the better special buildings in the game.
Battle Scholar: (I almost decided to abbreviate it as B.S. ) Handy, but not great. It's an extra Learning Stone, but that's it.
Heroes:
Gunnar or Deemer, depending on whether you are might or magic. Alamar is tempting too, but his specialty can't help your Black Dragons.
Overall: A great town, with its strength in magic and strong troops through most of the lineup.

A quite powerful town (sometimes I feel that it is "unfairly" powerful as compared with tower).
Mana vortex + high spell power of warlock is much better than library + high knowledge of tower heroes.
Battle scholar: good
Portal: good/great
Artifact merchant: good
Basically there is no "useless" or "undesirable" buildings/structures in dungeon. (except maybe the blacksmith, coz with your powerful magic heroes, you may not want that stupid ballista to shoot on the blind opponent creature)
Warlock is definitely your choice. However, overlord is also above average in terms of might hero.
Even though, dungeon is not my favorite town. Just not my taste.

Now to my opinion:
The Dungeon is a strong town, and one of my favourites when I was playing heroes 3.
The Dungeon is a strong town because...
- BLACK DRAGONS KICK ANY BUTT!
- Minotaurs are walking death machines, especially in large numbers.
- Medusas and Evil Eyes are awesome shooters.
- Harpy hags are a pain in the neck for siege defenders.
- Dungeon Heroes are among the greatest of the lot (high chance to learn earth Magic - you need expert TP).
- Very good special buildings (except Artifact Merchants - it's too expensive).
- POS can be deadly, but it depends on what dwellings you have outside.
The bad bits are:-
- Troglodytes are fairly weak units.
- Manticores are appalling level 6 units.
- Dungeon grail not so useful.
- Dragons expensive and hard to get.
Overall, i would rate the Dungeon 3rd.

I love Scorpicores but it's like they are weak for a level 6 creature (compared with black knights or unicorns). Although balck dragons are wonderful ones, they are hard to get as you said (seems like they are wizards, they want mega guild level 4 to live)

Wrong
As I've just answered at the "Dragons vs. Archangels" topic, the magic immunity is a very strong side of the Black Dragons (unless you have orb of vulnerability ). Imagine a Warlock with Armagedddon and a pack of BDs - it's really terrifying.
And the town itself is good, but I don't play it often. Don't know why - maybe because of the evil atmosphere of the town?
I especially love Harpy Hags - they're an excellent force for the town defenders, and a very dangerous creature anywhere else.
Minotaurs are also really powerful & I love them.
All other warriors I think are in the middle.

mixed bag
I think dungeon is in the middle, even a bit below. A dungeon army needs black dragons (even red dragons are not enuogh) to be of any substance and they are very hard to get. Usually you will get reds week or 2 after other towns get their level 7 and it will be awhile until you upgrade them. From the remaining troops only minotaurs are good, but not best for their level, the rest more or less suck, because they deal very little damage. Medusas and eyes combined do less shooter damage than grand elves for instance (altho they last much longer). The arma spell + blackies saves dungeon many times (if they are not long dead by then lol). Not one of my faviorite.

Units:
1. Troglodytes - quite powerful considering their numbers. Sturdy but with a useless special. They can even pack a punch later in the game.
2. Harpy Hags - very good units with their hit and run.
3. Evil Eyes - not very good shooters but sturdy and no melee penalty is good.
4. Medusa Queens - decent shooters and their special makes others to think twice before attacking them.
5. Minotaur Kings - one of the best level 5 units only mighty gorgons are better (because of their special). They hit hard, are hard to kill and move fast also having a better morale. What more could you want? Oh yes they cost quite a bit...but are worth it.
6. Manticores - quite good. One of the few level 6 which can fly. Their special is really good and it kicks in quite often
7. Black Dragons - battle tanks. Really powerful. Their special is really good.
Special Buildings:
Mana Vortex - recovers all mana and doubles it in a moment! One of the best.
Battle Academy - helps to get your hero started.
Portal - depends on what external dwellings you have.
Mage Guild:
Similary to Necropolis it has all the best earth spells: town portal, implosion, slow, meteor shower. Also it has good air spells: haste...
Overall:
A really good town although a bit expensive.

Discecting dungeon
Hello everyone!
I just joined Hcomm, this being my 1st reply, am very excited to writte about the game.
So, here's my humble view of dungeon
Units:
1. Troglodytes - their speed when upgraded enables them to make it across the battle field in two turns, which is probably their best quality. I agree that their special is almost useles, but due to their looks I kinda like them They are quite week, but have solid attacking ability, so overall I place them in the upper category of 1st level creatures.
2. Harpy Hags - at first I didn't like them, because they look bad and normaly make very small damage. But as I played more and more, I came to appreciate their unique ability of hit and run. Priceless when attacking the castle, but needs bless! Overall I place them as third best 2nd level in the game.
3. Evil Eyes - not very good shooters but sturdy and no melee penalty is good. I hesitate to attack them on the map early in the game.
4. Medusa Queens - decent shooters and their special makes others to think twice before attacking them. Very good for dungeon strategicaly to have their shooters so close to each other regarding level.
5. Minotaur Kings - one of the best level 5 units only mighty gorgons are better (because of their special). They hit hard, are hard to kill and move fast also having a better morale. What more could you want? Oh yes they cost a bit...but are definitely worth it. I'm so thrilled to have them. They even make my morale go up!:-)
6. Manticores - Probably the greatest disapointment in dungeon. Sure, the fly, are fast, even paralise, but they are so vulnerable.
7. Black Dragons - my favourite looking unit in the game! They are so awesome: immune to magic, 300 HP, breath attack, very fast, almost perfect.
Special Buildings:
Mana Vortex - great advantage! You don't have to go wandering around for wells.
Battle Academy - kinda cool to upgrade your hero instanty 1st day
Portal - very interesting. It's great if you have only red drag. dwelling flaged!
Mage Guild:
5 level mage guild is a very thankfull building. Surely you will get some good stuff there.
Overall: my second best castle! Rarely had it failed me when fighthing against a fellow player.
A really good town although a bit expensive.

Nothing is wrong with Revival, pal, as long as you add something to the discussion, and Dassa_Gozza did.

i like dungeon because the army is so cohesive. 3 flyers and 2 shooters makes it excellent for invading castles.
scorpicores may be weak, but this is why i like to be jeddite. i don't remember ever playing a game with jeddite and not getting earth magic. i usually get advanced earth magic in the first few weeks. then you don't need to worry about scorpicores dying, and it completely changes the strategy. i often split my scorpicores in two stacks for higher chance of paralysis. then when creatures are paralyzed you can resurrect anything that might have died. also, resurrection on red dragons is extremely helpful. being jeddite makes up for scorpicores being weak.
jeddite is probably the best magic hero in the game because having resurrection often means losing no troops in fights that you would normally lose a lot. this makes it easy to take utopias and then get great artifacts to make up for lack of attack and defense skill progression.
although troglodytes are on the weak side, you start with enough of them that they do a lot of damage.
i think dungeon easily has the best special buildings in the game. portal of summoning is unfair, especially if you get a native creature dwelling. mana vortex is excellent. battle scholar academy is helpful.
like others mentioned, 2 shooters with no melee is huge. shooters with melee penalty are awful for end game fights. one implosion, there goes all your grand elves, and melee penalty is brutal. grand elves also get targeted by arrow towers at castles, and get mauled in utopias. they are overrated. i would easily rather have medusas and eyes than grand elves or any other shooter with melee penalty.
black dragons are obviously one of the best level 7s. such a problem. fire breath attack is often devastating and overlooked. 2nd best level 7 creature behind AA's.
this town has great speed and firepower. while dungeon is not the best like conflux and necropolis, it is very dangerous and one of the most powerful towns. in my opinion it competes with castle for the 3rd best town based on the ability of the creatures and town specialties. also, if you get armageddon the game is pretty much over, and on a large map, it is very likely you will get it.
