I didn't say Behemoth dwelling was expensive. I wrote that ogre and cyclop dwellings were expensive. Learn English!
Ok.
Quote: 7. Ancient Behemoths - quite powerful with a useful special but needs haste to be useful. And quite cheap (not the dwelling).
(not the dwelling) implies that the dwelling isn't cheap. This is what I'm arguing. I think that the dwelling is fairly cheap. Especially if you find a trading post, which many maps in Toh do have.

Stronghold? My kinda town.
Kinda like a execution by guillotine. It's only painless if you finish it quick. Getting Behemoths and Castle by end of first week on Normal setting with minimal resource mining feels really damn good. By then, my level 3 hero is cleaning out stacks with minimal casualties and well on my way to dominating the map by the third/fourth week.
Normally, I'll focus on T-Birds, Ogre Magi, and A.Behemoths at the beginning of every week, with Orcs as support and Hobgoblins as cannon fodder. I'll never see a cyclops until week 7 or 8, as I'm more interested in building another support town by then.
Magic? Never get past 2nd level guild. My heroes don't have wisdom, and won't need it when Exp. Air is what I'm really looking for.
Ballistas are really helpful if you get Artillery. Even if not, the attack v. defense difference is usually high enough to warrant one.
For some reason, though, I have a really hard time with playing against Dungeon. Difference in speed, maybe?
These are just my opinions, and they've worked well enough for me. Your mileage may vary.

stronghold is dead last on my list on random 160%. No way you can get behemoths and castle week 1, unless it's ring or some other ultra rich template, and even if you do, you won't have money to buy your troops early anyway. Sometimes there are no crystals to buy the behemoths at all and you end up week 1 with goblins, woulves and rocs. Almost never you get cyclops and orcs are a pathetic shooter. That means you suffer losses in almost any battle, because of no shooters. No magic heroes to speek of and no good spells anyway unless you get another town and are willing to spend resources, especially crystals, on building a guild. Slow speed of 11 makes you vulnerable to hit&run or to strong initial attack from heavy hitters like castle or rampart.
There are 3 good units:
behemoths - will devastate everything they hit, but relatively slow, low defense and walking makes them not that usefull in a siege.
TB - good speed, good health and special, very important strategic unit
WR - deal tons of damage, but only without retaliation and die like flies.
The rest of the units are below average, only worth mentioning OM, because they last longer, but dont deal much damage.
Some good heroes, mostly battle mages like Gundula and Dessa.

Yup Stronghold can be tough on 160 depending also what map you play.
I had some lucky times ta build behemoth castle sometimes but not always of course.
Stronghold is a powerhouse castle & with Ancients you can even mess up thy most powerful wizard.
If you have recanters that can be lights out for thy other team or even anti magic on your behemoths.
Ancients are not as easy to kill as people think & plus you got those other powerhouse units man you are in for a treat.
Even with armourer Ancients can tear you apart

i dont think stronghold is bad at 160, acutally it would be my number 1 pick...coz yes you need to find that crystal, but its not much compared to other towns, for rampart you need to find em for pegasi, dungeon you need to find something for minos and mantis, and so on...also SH is cheap on gold, very cheap, behes only 1500 is a good deal on 160

well
only differense is that Rampart can produce its crystals, or Dungeon sulfur, or Inferno mercury, but SH can't. I suppose the most important thing is the playing style tho, and I just dont like playing with no shooters and no magic

Another great thing about stronghold is that I usually can get behemoths day 2 so I can have my main go off one way and have another get the resource mines with just the behemoths until I chain them back to main.

Well if you play on normal or easy I guess this is possible. It's been long ago since I played on those difficulties lol
Oh yea, and one behemoth week 1 is not enough to clear mines by itself most of the time, you may easilly lose it to shooters or morale. I would rather put it in my main army together with rocs to minimize loses.

I played mostly bfh before TOH switched to Heroes 4, so this is easy. I have stacks of 1 goblin also in order to take some of the blows off of the behemoth, but I would never go in against marksman, elves, or beholders. Maybe, MAYBE if I had a good haste and expert ballistics, but that's unlikely early in the game.

what a toss, you can get behemots on 130% and 160% too often, and 200% only newbies play (all depends on chests and start hero).
and 1 behemot can do a lot without losses that you couldnt do without it, sometimes you combine it with other troops as everyone knows...

I have to agree I played many 200% maps fixed or random & I was not always but sometimes about to pull out a Behemoth crag out of thy blue .
Most creatures1-3 are easy pickings to my behemoth, even some lv 4 lol.
Usually I have an army already for week 1 & just wait till next week to get another behemoth, since on a 200% probally be a little too tough to get behemoth Crag & castle

Andi, what the hell are you talking about
There is no way you can "usually" get behemoths day 2 on any decent map on 130 or 160%. I will talk about randoms, because that's all I play. First, there is a good chance you will start only with goblins. Even if you have wolves you need 12500 + 6 crystals (and 10 ore) to build rocs and behemoths and at least 1500 more to buy that behemoth. You will likely buy at least 2 heroes for the troops day 1, so you have to find 6 crystals and 8-9k gold in 2 days and have a hero in town in the beginning of day 2 to make use of that behemoth. I bet this will happen in no more than 1 out of 10 games, if that. On 130 you need 4 crystals and 3-4 k gold and I guess its more likely to happen, but by no means you can count on it.
Unless you get behemoths AND castle week 1 (citadel will give you just 1 more roc and some wolves and goblins) you don't have any real early advantage. For instance, I will rather have 2 efreet and 40 point magic arrow with Infernno than 1 behemoth and no magic week 1. And even on 160 its likely to be able to build efreet + castle since you dont need any resources, only some gold. And I rather have 6 efreet with a speed of 9 and magic arrow imunity than 2 behemoths with a speed of 6 that need 3 turns to reach the other side.

I was replying to redsoxfan who said he usually gets his behemoth day 2. I got the feeling that you meant my reply to him in your last post.
