If you are playing normal or easy I'm not surprised. It never flees on higher difficulty settings.

That could be it -- I am playing at normal until I grok each of the character types.

Quote: But the game was always meant for MP... geeez, it's like playing quake or CS solo.. it's just wrong
Really? Seems odd considering how unbalanced things are. Way to go to compare a turn-based strategy game to ego-shooters (some of which have nice single-player, mind you).
Most strategy games have a pretty simple AI that hardly surprises you, other than scripted events in the campaigns, but they are still enjoyable solo, and be it only for the story.
HoMM 5 AI however is pretty lacking even compared to the most basic AI's by making some pretty weird and often unwanted moves.
-Early retreats in the campaign missions.
-They just seem to love using the water swirls, sometimes multiple times per round. Way to waste your units.
-AI often uses a silly amount of heroes, mostly scouts with weak armies. 500+ free exp everytime you catch one of those.
-Late game AI turns take a lot longer than they should. Mostly because of IT and the aforementioned scouts, I guess.
-Lately, I've sometimes seen stupid actions like Overseers doing their special move with none around or the AI casting damage spells on their own units, and only them. The AI also just loves using raise death and phantom army when the hero has it, even if there is low to none benefit from it (repeated raise death makes unit stacks very easily to kill). On the other hand, there are spells that the AI never ever casts.

Was playing a game yesterday and AI kept surprising me:
ME: I scout the area with a secondary hero and find a castle captured by AI
AI: AI hero with around 2 weeks of fully upgraded troops hapilly strolls around castle area and decides to go opposite the direction I'm coming from to capture a mine
ME: I take the poorly guarded castle with my secondary hero and a small scouting army
AI: Comes back towards castle but is unable to reach it in 1 turn
ME: I run away with around 20 minotaurs and 10 assasins
AI: Leaves castle alone, goes in my direction nearly reaching me (I'm cornered)
ME: I run farther, and fight some griffons for xp, suffer a little losses and gain a lvl (AI can reach me if it wants to and it's last day of the week)
AI: Turns back and goes near castle
ME: I spend my turn regenerating mana
AI: Ignores castle and takes a creature dwelling... and goes back near center
No idea why it didn't want to fight me or take the castle

As far as I know, the AI never loses troops when moving through swirls. But I am not sure which is the chicken and which is the egg in this case; it could be that they programmed it so the AI doesn't lose troops because it moves through it so often, or it could be that the AI moves through it so often because it doesn't risk losing troops anyway.

Only thing AI is actually good at is rushing. With more inital ressources and troops it can be quite a challenge for the unprepared.

Some smart AI
I agree that too many stupid things happen with AI, I'll just say a few nice things they've done to surprise me.
1. overseerers exploding to cancel the effects of puppet master on ceberis. (sometimes casting stone spike as demons lack cleansing power)
P.S. They explode on frenzied ones when i tried again... idiot...
2. I heard someone had the computer using teleport assault on imps (after being stunned by wasp swarm) and sucked all mana away and lost. I personally doubted that the computer would have thought of that...
Man, so hard to come up with these, 2 only so far. There are other good things they do, like inquisitors casting divine strength on weakened marksmen when marksmen would act right afterwards, just not surprising since i can think of it easily. They don't do much good usually though...

You can't break Puppet Master by damaging the stack under Puppet control. I've used it more than once for damage control: just Puppet the most dangerous stack and then kill it with your own units without getting retaliations.

For my version, ANY damage breaks puppet master. As long as HP decreases while puppet master buff is active, whether assassin's poison dealt previously, decay spell, self hitting or attacks and retaliates from ANY creature.
That's why I prefer to use it on no retaliation or ranged creatures only.

In my game last night, the enemy (neutrals) attacked the war machines with hundreds HP instead of attacking the creatures. I'm playing the current version and at Heroic.

A.I. stands for Artificial Intelligence. If you play against A.I. that means you"re playing against the computer, not against a human opponent.

It's fine, just that I feel out of date. My tactics or little details I found out probably doesn't even exist anymore, but they're certainly the case for me though
I'll speak when I want to, so don't worry
