So some say 3.rd mission is easy, others its near impossible...

For my part I have to redo the whole damn thing cause that heroine guarding the town is like lvl 25?!?! I am playing at normal an there is simply no way I can go up and just take that town.
Should I explore more above ground? Return for additional troops?
Also is the town getting harder or can I try to outgrow it?

Oh a few more: Preperation, is that automatic or do my hero have to activate it (and loosing a turn in the process).

Excatly how much do the def./off. formations help?

Thus Manaburn suck as much as its seems to?

I don't recall the mission, but Preparation is automatically active for every defending creature.
About the formations, I didn't have much experience with them but I think they aren't bad.
and Mana Burst isn't very useful...except when facing small stacks of casters, but even then the damage is not exceptional

Thank you.

Restarted and have just finished first mission. This time I went with besides logistics and runes:

Destruction (the very last pick before lvl-cap )
Enlightment (more mana and better stats. Oh and tap rune )
Warmachines (for the ballista...well..it seemed logical at the time )

The last...Ligth or sorcery or defence. I will avoid the rest.

I never tried to BLAST myself thru a campaign before but here goes nothing

I should say that i never depended on destruction before. With Dungeon it was abit of everything.

After reading the initial post, I even redid the Fortress campaign and focussed on reaching Armegeddon capabilities.  Very nice, but still not sufficient - Lazlo still out-numbers by more than 4-1.

Waiting in the city doesn't work 'cause he just seems to know where Duncan is and goes right after him.  Meeting in the open fails because the griffins and champions move too quickly and mean I can't just spell and range Lazlo.

Is there a cheat to increase my numbers maybe?

M

No, he doesn't know where Duncan is, if, after taking some mines by that dud, you hide him in safe place... Cannot describe where it is...
But I'll try anyway... There are some Water Elementals close to Tor Hrall beat 'em and then put Duncan there (in corner) and DO NOT use him after that...
That's true you loose secondary hero in early game, but then you can turtle Wulfstan...
I made that 4 times and at last have beaten Laszlo...
Remeber thet even if u are turtled it is not very easy to defeat Laszlo, so be prepared for difficult skirmish...

That Lazlo is a b*ch to fight. Those Mass Spells and insane amounts of low tier creatures makes his world. I tried to fight him on land, in the Haven Castle and finally I turtled to my Fortress Castle where he arrived quite soon after I had checked the otherside of the bordergate. But actually, this wasn't as tough anymore, thanks a lot to Guardpost.

But had he not attacked my Fortress, I would have had a tough time beating him for sure.

You can kill Laszlo with 4-5 battle griffins stacks and 2-3 fodder stacks(squires and shieldguards will do fine).
1. Battle dive with all griffins.
2. Use fodders to lure paladins and some other Laszlo's stacks inside a 4x4 battlefied center.
3. Cast armageddon to own 4x4 center of the battlefield with 60*Spellpower damage.
4. Repeat.

If everthing looks dark guys, If it seems you cant defeat Laszlo theres one final way to beat his ass! I conquered almost everything on the map except Horncrest (I didnt have the Tears Of Asha btw) The thing is, hes army dont grow, so I let Laszlo sit in Horncrest, to I have assebled many weeks worth of creatures, then I sieged him. A great  final solution. Since Horncrest had ordinary units he didnt get more troops. The only thing he exchanged was his 4 Fallen Angels for 10 Paladins, a mistake IMO

Not end stats but a clue to how I developed Wulfstan

I never had problems with Laszlo. The way it went... one of his heroes went through the garrison when Wulfstan was pretty far away, got a bit worried then as only had Duncan with some crap troops in tor'hrall, but fortuantely he just visited the windmill and some crap and went back, then I got Wulfstan back to castle and gave him all troops I could afford, which was all from everything except thanes that hadn't bought any yet and dragons that had about half bought. Everything except thanes and priests were upgraded already. Then he ran to Horncrest with two heroes to turtle, I went there and beated them and took the castle. Laszlo was in the other town at the time with rather buff troops that I couldn't handle without reinforcements so I went back to my town to get the rest of my troops. Laszlo comes to get Horncrest back and then turtles in  there, never moving an inch from there anymore for the rest of the game. I just kill his other hero that was at the door of Horncrest, and take the other haven town. There is no tavern in Horncrest so he can't hire any other heroes and Laszlo just sits there. Then I wait like a month or so until I have finally got all my units bought and then I just massacre Laszlo. I had iirc something like 29 magma dragons, 40 warlords, 70 or so rune patriarchs, 400 or so blackbear riders (had got some joiners earlier), a bit over 100 berserkers, and like 600+ of both skirmishers and shield guards so Laszlo didn't really stand a chance. And that was on Hard difficulty. My Wulfstan had pretty much might build... logistics, leadership, luck, offense, and defense

3rd mission
on Heroic

First of all the only damaging spells i have are fist of wrath and stone spikes bu the stone spikes do +100 damage so it's pretty useful.I choose the 30 skirmishers, then take the gold from scouts, sometimes they join me but not on heroic, after which i take all of the defenders with me and 7 bear riders from pens.Usually I visit the building where you can learn a rune but its not very important.Andreas is at the bridge before you reach the hero you have to free(which by the way is Helmar). The 7 brawlers are useless,if they haven't died when the vindicators are close enough to your ranks then make the vindicators retaliate on  them and then attack them with everything else.So it's a pretty hard batlle if I wouldn't ordered those defenders to join me.He has a pack of batlle griffins which are though to beat but i hit them with both my skirmishers and spearwielders, cast a stone spike on his enforcer and vindicator(I am able to cast 4 stone spikes,I only have 2 knowledge),sometimes on his crossbowmen.Andreas may cast benediction or he attacks my bears. With my remaining troops i am able to defeat him(but again you should choose those defenders to join you). When I get close to the prison i end my turn. Then when I am right near it i free Helmar(purple colour) and go up back north. From here I save cause he may want to go left or right. If he goes right you can see some spearwielders of skirmishers that always join you, plus they are guarding some recources. You have to keep up the pase cause just before you exit the undergroung there are vindicators guarding the exit.Helmar will be beaten and you will lose secondary mission if he charges them. After that Helmar is completely safe and heads out of the map.I think by this time you get to see Freyda capturing a dwarven castle which has the player colour purple and so it's of Helmars faction, but don't worry, that's just for show.He sends 50 bersekers to your aid which come in handy.Go up the road(there are blade barracks and defender structures from where you can recruit them),and  when you're at the left corner you can have 1 warlord and some thanes join you.You then have to beat batlle griffins that are guarding some sort of garrison. And when you finally reach the castle the hero that defends it is Valeria. Her troops aren't a problem, the thing is she has a Guardpost and thus she has plenty of shieldguards.I kept doing stone spikes cause now I had I think 35 spell points so i could cast it seven times.I used this on all of her forces, except shieldguards. In the end I had the skirmishers ,and about 4 or 5 bears that survived. Then you can rebuild your army cause no enemy hero will ever attack you.I had 11 thanes when the caravan arrived. And the caravan is weak compared to the VAleria

I don't have any problems with him since gaining my the ultimate skill (Absolute Protection) which is a must against Laszlo. Assaulting me with incredible army (the ultimate cuts damage a half) defeating legions of enforcers , swarm of crossbowman and much more. Only the ultimate saved me

I skipped Destruction magic because I feel its worthless for end game phat fights unless youre a Warlock.

For that reason I took Light Magic, Luck, Attack, and skipped Dark Magic for the Summoning Magic to take full advantage of Phantom Forces.

I paid an early price of not having much firepower to creep, along with only have the gimp 1-2 runes available until m4(its all about the charge anyway).

Whooped m3 by Icebolting with a Icicle and Phantom Forcing Bear Riders.

It all paid off in the end, m3 was pwnd without any real losses, even took out the Renegade hero in the underworld in the first week, he has artifacts.

Currently on Map 4 and I feel so overpowered with duped Warlords & Magmas that could destroy anything with that Wulfstan, Ill post a SS later today.

BTW Took the same route with Fredya: Light Magic, Luck, Sorcery, Summoning, and Attack. PF is such a devastating spell for so many reasons I dont have to explain.

Nope, otherwise Expert PF would be a Fortress requirement!

The phantoms can usually reach targets because they tend to appear in front of their clone. Many ways to abuse it, in this pic I blocked his dumb champion and made him pay the price for missing, then hit that nice ripe Storm Strike cluster near the bottom.

Starting Stats: Map 3, Map 4, Map 5

Im taking out m5 now, Im positive that Laszlo chump doesnt stand a chance whatsoever against that Whoopin Wulfstan.

sorry thread reviving!

but since this is a thread to help I want to help on mission two. When you get to the most northen point of the map UNDERGROUND!!! right next to the sawmill there is a treasure chest in the middle of a swamp area. TAKE IT. no matter what you do take it. because when wulfstan is about to take it a green cloud will come around him like if someone has tossed a suffering spell on him. BUT this is a good thing. Because after that he will have nothing changed besides he will have 5 morale and 5 luck for the rest of the mission. It helps really much. you can basiclly use the starting army to win the whole thing.

Should I aim for Preparation or for Vitalityuber shieldguards?

Mission 4 The Brothers

I'm a bit confused about this mission. One of the objectives is to meet Duncan's army, but whenever I get near him he attacks me. And also my only option when I see him is to attack. He is quite powerful and I have never managed to defeat him. I'm confused because all walkthroughs I have read have stated that he will join me. Do I have to defeat him before he joins me?

Zamfir, preperation is never a bad thing with Fortress.  Ever.  You can go all defense, and still thrash your enemy.  You will not be using things like Rune of Beserking, or anything (and thus conserving resources) but they are already plenty tough enough.  You add in reduced damage, extra hit points, and striking first on retal, and you got a MONSTER of a fighting force.

Folstag - Not sure why that happens, who are you taking to see him?  Maybe a different hero is required?  Been awhile since I played the missions...

The only hero aivailable from the begining of the mission is Wulfstan, so I can't bring another hero to Duncan. It seems that Duncan is spawned in the middle of the map and then he just heads towards me. And instead of friendly reunion all I get is a very hostile behaviour.
