Homm RP and Writing Contest
Objectives:
- To have short story and writing contests
- To start a roleplay based on the entries submitted by the contestants.
Topic for all submissions:
You may write about a town you created for the ICTC contest, or you could write about a completely new and different town. Essentially if you never took part in ICTC, then you can join too without having to create an entire town.
To simplify as well as clarify as to what should be submitted, anything that would fit into the Erathia universe. Feel free to write about how units are trained or whatever comes to mind. It could be about anything you want.
Categories for Submissions:
There will be three categories for submissions.
1.) Short Stories
- These will generally be the longer of the submissions. Unfinished stories are acceptable if they are longer and have multiple scenes.
2.) Scene Writing
- This is a piece of a story. It is strongly recommended that when writing a short story, you should think of it as a series of scenes strung together with bits of narration between. For scene writing, you could write about a battle, you could write about a diplomatic meeting between two counties, you could write about a number of things.
3.) Flash Fiction
- Think of this as a piece of a scene or a piece of narration. No more than 500 words is allowed for a submission into this category.
- Here’s an example of flash fiction. The prompt was the word “Threshold” and there was extra credit for including something about Lord of the Rings.
Quote:
The man stared down at the clear liquid splashing at his feet. He wiggled his feet into the sand and looked back at his friend.
“It’s a little cold,” he said to her. “But it feels good.” It was early June, the first day that the temperature had reached ninety degrees. His friends walked up next to him and walked into the water.
“It’s freezing!” one of them yelled as the cold set in and began to make her feet ache. The man walked out to the deeper waters. The ocean waves oscillated up and down from his shins to his thighs. He stopped where he was and watched his girlfriend walk out deeper and deeper into the water until the water went up to her belly button.
“It’s so cold!” she said with a laugh. The girl dunked herself down in the water and let out a shrill as the chilly ocean waters touched her sunbaked skin.
“I hate this part,” he said.
“Just dunk yourself in like I did.”
“Give me a second.” The woman shook her head at him and dunked herself again this time soaking her hair in the salty waters. The man took a few steps and dove completely into the water. He came up and gasping for air and smiled at his girlfriend.
“It’s so cold. But it feels great.” He started treading water for a little bit before asking her a question. “Do you wanna go see the new Lord of the Rings after this?”
Another Note on Submissions:
Suppose that you write a short story, you may take a scene from your short story and enter it into the Scene Writing Contest. Also if you submit an entry for the scene writing contest, you may take a piece of that scene and submit it to the flash fiction contest likewise for the Short Story Contest. However if you pull a piece out of your story and submit it to the flash fiction contest, you may want to do some editing, because of the strict word count limitations.
How Will the entries be judged?
1.) Description
- How vivid and relevant the descriptions are for the story
2.) Character Development
- How well are the characters portrayed, how real do they come to life
3.) Plot
- How well does the piece flow overall? Is the pace good, does it have a good climax, how dynamic are the events?
4.) Theme / Meaning
- What is there to be said about the abstract meaning of the story? Is there humanity to be felt in the characters? Does the story have a deeper message?
How Many Entries Can Be Submitted?
As many as you want.
Where / How Should I submit my Entries?
Entries Thread
Also at the beginning of your post, please state which category you wish to submit your piece. (in case there is any discrepancy)
Deadline for Submitting Entries:

Nice idea.
Anyway, can anyone write story about any faction or each one can write story only about his faction?

I think you'd have to get permission, if you wanted to base it directly off someone's town. But if a town inspired you to think of some completely different town, then you can do that if you wish.
The way I've thought about it is most of the towns will be peasants where a few people are involved in the summoning/training/etc of their sacred defenders.
So basically it could be about a hero, it could be about a common folk. And if you chose to write about one particular creature, then you could do that as well.
Basically the short stories will give us some good ideas and at least a basis from which to spawn an RP. If you participate in the Short Story Contest, you will already have a character or two fleshed out as well as the way of life that your town follows.

Feel free to submit multiple entries. However only your best entry will make it into the rankings. So if you submit 5 entries and two of them are in the Top 10, only the highest scoring entry will show. The other entries will be listed separately at the bottom.
I've created a separate thread for submitting entries.
Sometime within the next week or so, I'll post guidelines for judging entries.
If anyone is willing to help judge, please let me know. Note that this would involve a fair amount of reading. I'd expect probably a couple hours or maybe a few hours of reading would be required depending on how many and how long the entries are.

It will be at least a couple weeks.
Edit: Anyone interested in the RP, should post here.
Homm RP
Also you don't have to have created a town in order to take part in the short story contest. You may simply write about a made up hero or a completely different town or empire, so long as it would fit into the Homm world.

Yeah, you'd like that, wouldn't you? Winning before anyone else comes up with something as good as yours? We caught ya red-handed!
No, seriously, Daystar deserves to win...He completely annihilated my belief that I was a fairly good RP'er.
It has an overwhelming length, and it has a pretty good plot. You can't really rate character development, as I think that the story is far from finished...No problem with conversations, either, they're deep enough...
A few remarks:
- Some spelling faults, but they could be typo's as well...
- The last sentence suddenly stops. Y? what does that mean?
- Sometimes a bit cliché, but that can be fun, too!
My overall rating: 8,5/10
A bit more polishing, perhaps? Not that's it necessary, but it'd help I suppose...

BUMP
OK we've gone a bit over with this one.
There are lots of words entered here, too many to let it fade into oblivion. I propose that we give it one more month -
Final entries due on 18 Dec 2007
I can help judge if you don't have the time sox, and if you wanted to enter the other short story you have started you can withdrawl from judging and become a contestant Or I can butt out, let me know.
Regardless, lets get some more entries and find ourselves a winner.
You don't have to be participating in the RP to enter.
