Game ruiners
A lot of battles can be decided early on by Morale bonuses. The sorrow spell perhaps is an answer, but it so easily turns battles. I guess if you get so knit-picky about luck though, you'd have to say, well it comes down the dice rolls on a completely even team. But I think it's interesting to dispute where we draw the line between acceptable luck factor and game ruiners. For instance, yes I get a hillfort or a cartographer on my map, but you don't... haha!!! I win!? Perhaps this is the case, but then both your towns are the same as your main castle.... Ok, both of these are luck factors that can sway a game... why is the multiple towns okay, but the hillfort isn't? Okay, no building outside main rule, fine. What about utopia's? The one's in your area give you sword of judgement, lion shield, etc... while the one I got gives me endless sack of gold ambassador's sash and head of legion... Again this is an acceptable luck factor?
I don't have all the experience to really understand this argument... can anyone explain why certain luck factors are okay and others are not?

i play with no rules.. thats right lol, no rules
in terms of luck, yes sometimes luck decides the game.. sometimes it kills you but sometimes you've got it.
i know i am probably in the extreme minority here but i like to keep the game as it is, even if it means sometimes i will lose b/c of bad luck.

I'll chime in for no rules. When I hear people talking about games of no this and no that... It's no wonder some people think only this works or only that works: They tailor the rules to make it so!
Heroes has a bizarre artifact heirarchy. Shouldn't be a surprise considering there's Logistics and then there's Eagle Eye. Just like starting off choosing artifact as your bonus could get you the Badge of Courage, or you could get the Statue of Perception. Just like one person can grab a scroll of Scuttle Boat, while another finds Blind.
It's a luck factor all must face and unless it's a random map that has you walled in with no way of learning DD, the game CAN be played. It might be downhill from the start, but it could be a test of nerves and you might even develop your skills by being forced amongst circumstances you don't normally find yourself. HOMM3 is not like a bowling league. It's not like bad luck today will stay with you all season. In a few hours, you can play another map. If the random toss doesn't make things interesting, play chess where there are no random factors.

I think it's best to play with no rules when you're playing for fun. In tournaments I think it's ok to make rules, but playing for fun is much better with no rules. Luck is an important factor, so says Machiavel.
