I almost cut my hair
Almost Cut My Hair
Quote: School uniform - is it needed?
Quote: Well of curse. Jeans and t-shirt would just be a bad choice
Quote: I don't like school uniforms and uniforms generally but if u ask me if i want uniforms at least in school i would say yes.
If kids don't wear uniforms in public schools like in my country, teasing all the time each other about what clothes they were.If some kids don't wear famous trademarks they get teased by everyone. It's so bad.
It may sounds not a big deal to us,but when u are kid it's much more different. If your parents don't have the money or don't want to spend so many money to buy u an "adidas" and buy u an "abidas" u get badly teasing.U don't want to go to school again.Too complexes.
So i prefer uniforms at schools and yes for me are needed.
I can't believe you people accept school uniforms as ok, or even think it's good! Do you realize how many people fought to get rid of those bull**** dress codes? That was a major fight between parents and kids and the school system that took a lot of years to win. And you people willingly throw away what others fought to gain?
And getting made fun of by stuck-up snobs because you don't wear designer clothes is no excuse.....it's one more thing to fight against.
There's no way in hell I'd wear a tie to school! I'd wear jeans and they'd have to physically pick me up and throw me out if they didn't like it. (and then I'd turn around and go back in)

It's tradition. I have to wear a tie and all that, similar to that uniform actually, but its an old fashioned school and you have to do it if you want to go there.
If you didn't wear uniform you couldn't come to the school.
They say its because no uniform leads to distractions and complications and discrimination when coming to school but it's really just being stubborn and sticking with tradition.
Soon enough they'll change. Reluctantly.
One of my old schools didn't have uniform and it worked fine..

I like uniforms in schools, although in Aust they are compusory so I have never really known anything else. I really can't find an argument against uniforms that is really convincing.
What's your argument?

Exactly!
I've heard of some schools in the US talking about requiring uniforms, but I don't know if any have actually done it. I'm pretty sure none of the schools around my area have them. And there weren't any in California when I lived there.
One thing I think is cool is that old beat up blue jeans full of holes is becoming popular again. As far as I know that's what the kids are wearing to school.
One of the stupidest dress codes was requiring girls to wear dresses to school even in the winter when it was -20 outside.
From the response of people at HC, it sounds like uniforms are MUCH more common than I would have expected. I thought we broke down all those barriers more than a few decades ago.
As far as distraction. Who could possibly think clearly with one of those nooses around their neck???

Well, what amuses me is that people who object uniforms the most already look the same alltogether - cuz they follow fashion instead. It's so ridiculous when 10 identically dressed (except the colours) guys say "uniforms gonna kill our uniqueness"
Btw, I had to wear a "uniform" in my secondary school. It was just a grey, ugly vest, oh well. Fortunately had to wear no uniforms in high school

They might look the same, but they do it by choice.
Quote: I really can't find an argument against uniforms that is really convincing.
It's very simple:
1) Uniforms suck.
2) There's no good reason to wear them.
3) If someone doesn't want to wear them they shouldn't have to.
To be honest, I'm totally and completely shocked that so many schools seem to require uniforms. If I had a kid in one of those schools, this is something I'd be willing to go to jail fighting. (it wouldn't be my first time)

They mean distraction as in spending time before school deciding what to wear, having to keep buying clothes to wear to school etc.
It's just a ridiculous old rule, but oh well. I can live with it

I remember when they first got rid of the dress codes at my school (1970-71 year). Two things happened. First, everyone suddenly started dressing differently. Second, well, there wasn't a second thing. It made no difference in student performance.
I guess I shouldn't imply that they got rid of the dress code completely, they just loosened up on the rules quite a bit. I mean we were still required to wear clothes and shoes. (I cheated on the shoes part by cutting the bottoms out of my shoes so I could go barefoot with only the tops of the shoes showing)
Then mini-skirts got popular. Nice! And then hotpants got popular. OMG, those hotpants just made a guy drool! Back then that was like soft porn walking around the halls of the school.

Uniforms in rich countries(or should I say in countries where people are rich?) is not a huge problem they are just a esthetical problem.(luckily they aren't needed in Finland though)
In poor countries where education would otherwise be free the uniforms are too expensive so poor people won't be able to afford them and go to school.
They really are the ULTIMATE EVIL!!. We must protect ourselves from it and repel the ULTIMATE EVIL!!.
(Sorry about that I've been playing too much Star Control 2 and just couldn't resist)

Excellent Discussion Binabik
School uniforms is very much a relevant and important debate to have on all levels in all areas of the world. In my mind I think the idea of school uniforms can be helpful in many specific circumstances and disconcerting in many others.
I believe that there are many children whose environment and atmosphere for childhood is the definitive essence of what it means to live in utter chaos. For example, a child whose mother is single and working with no father or otherwise responsible male role model figure in their life might find a serious lack of discipline all too common. Children who lack discipline and the understanding of team-oriented concepts need other venues of exposure for the greater good of society.
Here in our country individualism is extremely important only to the point of peace-time endeavors. Let's say a great atrocity/tragedy were to happen and we were to suddenly be invaded or nuked or hit by massive catastrophic natural forces. During these historic disastrous circumstances people need to come together, form ranks, fall in line, act for the greater good, and show that while they are all individuals .... they would still come together in the support of your fellow human beings and countrymen and women. The showing and turnout of persons for such things is an excellent indicator of the greatness of a people toward all of their beliefs, customs, and reputation.
The child who has never known the concept of "team" or humanitarian oragnizational skills and brotherhood/sisterhood will likely continue to want to be selfish during such situations in my opinion. Children who have never been shown the benefits of societal espri de corp might be much less likely to get involved at the appropriate time out of ignorance.
However, those concerns are for a very specific type of child. Those circumstances are not at all representative of even half of any population. I would say they're a minority of low occurance spread thinly throughout ours and other countries' population. The percentage might be much higher where the reigning government is nothing more than a continuous string of warlords struggling for power.
For most persons in this day and age I would say that school uniforms inhibit individualism rather than help it. The individual is important in our society for a plethora of reasons. I'm sure you can elaborate greatly on individualism. Your were wrought of the individualism age were you not? As you said, these matters were discussed, debated, and fought over long ago. Today we reap the benefits of such idealogical battles, most of which are good and healthy in my opinion.

I had uniforms for 8 years. Now, my new school has none. Trust me, I can give you an argument against uniforms.
Wearing your own clothes really helps "define" who you are, as opposed to legions of same-looking conformity.

The problem with wearing normal cloths to school is this.
If you are poor, the other "richer" kids might pick on you, because you have poor clothes.
Sure, wearing normal clothes is awesome, but the less rich kids will be picked on because they have poorer clothes.
School uniforms all look the same, so you can't pick on someone who has the same uniform as you.

Yeah that's true William, but...
The uniforms aren't really the source of the problem, they're simply the focus of it. Where you have uniforms, the problem (bullying) is just displaced to other things, not eliminated.

Poor kids don't get picked on for having poorer clothes..
If it did happen in a few schools (have to be pretty dodgy schools) those kids would have been bullied regardless. At least they'd be more comfortable while being bashed up.
Money really doesn't make a difference.
I mean, there was one really rich kid who liked to show it, and always wore these Gucci sunglasses to school. People called him gootch lol.
