I also thought it was useless,but you can spot your enemies easily with scouting.Now,back to the Clash between Deemer and Solmyr Solmyr's Chain Lint. can be useful,very useful but not in the early game.it can hit your troops as well,and its damage gets smaller for every creature that is struck by it.
Deemer's Meteor Shower is guaranteed to hit only your enemies,and it's damage remains the same.Also,Deemer can have high spellpower at an early level.

Day 1-2 = Solmyr, Day 3+ = Deemer. Those are fun to play with on small maps I've had quite a few games of Deemer vrs Solmyr on those.
Edit: I'd also add Ciele to the list. She can give a hard time to both of the above.

I would definetly go for deemer!
Sorcery is a skill I don't like at all, advances scouting rocks, even more if you have it on your starting hero.
Fruther more, If you get earth magic, you can meteorshower/magic arrow until you are out of mana, than you pay a visit to your castle, take some ranged build a mana vortex, and out again to smash everything.
Deemer and Solmyr are among the best heroes around, but Deemer got it all

Solmyr is Better (Realy, More powerful), because he allready has chain lightning at day 1 of the game. I don't understand why some people choose heroes with special abilities like Bless, Stone Skin, Shield...
A level 4 spell is much more effective

It is? How often can Solmyr cast chainlightning in the first days? 1 time a battle? maybe 2 times? What does he do if he faces only ONE stack of enemies? If he faces golems?
A speciality which helps your own troops is always preferable to specialities which harm opponent/enemy, because you can rely on it more often...

It is? How often can Solmyr cast chainlightning in the first days? 1 time a battle? maybe 2 times? What does he do if he faces only ONE stack of enemies? If he faces golems?
A speciality which helps your own troops is always preferable to specialities which harm opponent/enemy, because you can rely on it more often...
That's why my favorite Castle hero is the Prayer specialist
I allways try to find a hero with sorcery bonus, like Malekith, Zydar, Sandro, Gird and custom scripted heroes

Deemer can cast meteor shower on single stack for example, but the thing that I like most is the advanced scouting he starts with (really valuable for a starting hero), and the possibility, being dungeon, to build a mana vortex when you are out of mana: that way, you would save precious time (no need to rest in town) and you'll have extra mana for extra meteor-showers. They can make quite a difference in the start!
And he's like the HoMM2 warlocks, wisdom and advanced scouting!

I just think that Solmyr is more useful for me, because I always give all my troops to the starting hero and the first days I build only creature dwellings. So I allways have a powerful starting hero and in most cases I meet creatures combined to many stacks. For Every case I carry a couple of golems in 3 - 4 slots to reduse the damage if the enemy stacks are less than 4.

I always choose Solmyr over any another!!!
but it may be something that i play Solmyr on WoG
I always pick the rule with random monsters helping wandering monsters (so my CL is much more useful vs critters)
also in WoG you have comander and a henchman so it makes CL more precious (and to mention if opponent have war machines there are many better chances to use that spell)
Also as I always play hotseat (Single is not enough fun, network is killer for WoG) he uses extended speciality of autocast magic arrow at no cost at some chance, which is not priceless
However in WoG there are more good heroes - not mention about Lyonis starts with Learning (the skill for exp) as i always check the extended Learning even if I play Solmyr as always
but Christian with Ogre Leader is real ASSASIN with his little balista, even more if ballista is leveled (war machines 1 script allows that) not to mention if Warfare is enabled using Christian is sure like cheat
(however I never choosen Warfare script on because it looks like cheat even without war machine specialists)
analogically with aid tent specialist with the Aid tent specialled commander, and even more - because you mainly have no units losses due to Aid tent Ressurection
