What a man what a man, no not the song...
Epicurus had a wonderful quote that if we could really dilute it down to simpler form would play a huge role in repairing some of societies mishaps; "One must not be possessed by pleasure, but must possess the pleasures." Epicurus lived pleasantly among friends and adhered to a life that was beyond serene and simplistic. We as a war filled, politic controlled, and a society that lives among a controlled environment that really has none , could gain some great insight from this philosophy.
We can find a way to slide the philosophy of the Epicureans into our society that has learned to live under the materialistic acid cloud that has taken over. We stop finding pleasure in the mindsets of those that thrive off of nothing that really matters e.g. money, sex, material items, and other pleasures that have been over used. If we could make people understand that working for each other and paying the man is not what defines us as people, this would be a huge stepping stone to recovery.
We need to work for the one thing that the Epicureans promote and that is food, shelter and a joy for living. Think about how much more bonded we, as families would become. No more hours in front of the T.V. letting the make believe characters shape our children's mind and ethics as well as directing their moral compass. I know that we as parents are in charge of this task but when you have to keep up with unnecessary inflation and everyday expenses we have to have two incomes. This takes away from that valuable time with our children. What if none of this was ever introduced and we still had Mrs. Ingalls baking bread and talking about life with our children while waiting for the man to come home with the dinner? I know that this seems a bit much to comprehend however, if we could would we not make it this way or at least pull some of the value system from that? To get a whole society to conform to this idea would be impossible and looked at as some sort of cult. However baby steps on the stones of a true morally dieing country would be a hell of a start.

Eh ....
I'm not sure if this is one of your more clearly written pieces. I think I understand what you're getting at Violent_Flower, but I'm not sure if others will. I noticed you are using references that some people might not understand like "Mrs Ingles". Even some of the other American members might not know that this is in reference to an old t.v. show, "Little House on the Prairie". I had trouble finding what it was you were trying to discuss. The title seemed confusing to me. I think you are trying to discuss modern American (specifically) family values? And you are describing some of your concerns with you being a single mother? Was your main concern the current t.v. shows and cartoons that your children watch?

This had nothing to do with me being a single mother just to do with the lack of time that we have to spend with our children anymore in general. Epicurus is the "What a man" I was referring to. I like his way of thinking and some of his philosophy.
I was not trying to write some over the top in depth thought. I was just saying that some of his quotes (which for those that don't know any of them here is a site you can go to http://www.epicurus.net/ ) are right on for me. I was not looking even for a response just writing down some thoughts. In reference to Mrs. Ingalls, it is not my objective on here to write so that everyone on all borders of the world can understand; if one finds some of his thoughts interesting well then they can do research themselves and then respond to it.
Quote: Was your main concern the current t.v. shows and cartoons that your children watch?
Sure there are some concerns about that however, it was his idealisms about life that I would like to slip into todays society. There was a different connection before technology and not that it is a negative additive for people today because it has opened several doors. In the same note it has also closed certain doors and anyone that keeps one blind eye open can see this deterioration.
So you would have to go and read about his philosophy to understand where I'm coming from.
