Maybe...
...it's a reaction by 3DO.
Maybe they are tired of the whole fantasy genre and it is a "in your face" to all the would-be adventurers out there.
Maybe they are poking fun, subconsiously, at there own creation.
Maybe the artistic director would rather be designing the next futuristic rpg.
Maybe 3DO needs a holiday...it isn't fantasy....
hmmm...come to think of it there was a game out years ago called Fantasy General. The term "fantasy" in this game was not restricted to Tolkinesque creatures...there were many robotic creations.
Maybe the creators want a free hand to include anything "fantastic".
Personally, I think it's ok...but the sunnies have to go

The whole idea of Dragon Golems is wrong. It is the step towards Bike Kings riding motorbikes swinging a chainsaw.
All respect for the team trying to develop the game - also using imagination instead of only myths, but this looks like an idea that should have been sacrificed in the process of making the game. Surely they have had a lot of laughs and big wide eyes over these DG dudes, but sometimes you have to kill your darlings in order to preserve the spirit of the game.
HMM4 is probably so far in the process that significant changes are not possible, but I really hope that the HMM4 team will change their minds and develop the atmosphere of the game intact instead of making it into Lego monsters.

Pardon me, but I donn't know which side I should go for, against or for.
Well, I actually wish for it to stay(except for the glasses) because, yes it is beyond fantasy, and that's really creative. I think it'd be alright for it to stay in the game, as long as there's some story to it. I mean, you can't judge it's close-up look until you know the story, maybe it's really a robot linked to the story? You never know. But anyway, because of my liking of things with dragon in its name, I like the Dragon Golem.
I don't think it's going way too far making basically a robot dragon. I only think it's way too far if 3do makes a heap of robotic creatures that fight alongside mythical creatures.

I agree with Jenova and Holger...
Jenova's messages could be written by me (almost, I would have longer and duller ones).
Yes, dumb them.
Golems are animated through magic I believe...
I would partly understand some mild steammachine stuff but not any naga-tanks...

I honestly reckon that the dragon golems look pretty cool...
well apart from the dude sitting on it... i admit that he should be taken away.. but all in all, after reading the other posts, i still reckon that the dragon golems are a very inuative and refreshing idea...

If the dragon golem makes mechanical or robotic noises (when moving or attacking) then that's it, I'm going to kill it first thing. In every battle.

Betcha 50 bucks it does. Maybe it's 3do's revenge for the forge Personally I hate it.. the idea and concept is great, and the artwork itself is beyond excellent, but I would rather have it not driven by a person, and less springs, joints and air compressors and more magically animated metal. It just doesn't fit in right, because although Diamond golems are essentially the same concept, the diamond golems had no working gears and air compressors and screws and nails... just my two cents, and Jenova, if it makes robotic noises, I'll beg for the team at Homm 3.5 to find a way to edit it out j/k. Anyways, lots of good thoughts here.

one thing to remember is that pictures like the big one are just artist renditions. The actual unit looks quite different when it is a tiny thing on the battlefield. You can't see the springs, and other things it looks more like just a dragon statue with a guy riding on it.

In my opinion, the Academy should have the Crystal Dragon instead. The Dragon Golem should stay but as a misc creature. I just don't like the way NWC misuse the term "golem". The Golem Dragon are supposedly called "Automaton Dragons" instead, due to its mechanical nature.

Yeah...Ilike the sound of magically animated metal. Maybe the same as the pic except it should have basically metal that floats!
The geek might be alright if his glasses are off...
I still like the idea of an animated rock dragon wouldn't that be kool?

Actually, LL, the Crystal Dragons are Dragon Golems(technically). I guess NWC wanted to really improve on them........ahhh, but are they going too far? I'd repeat what I said earlier, but I'm too lazy to type that right now.

I really don't think they were trying to change Crystal Dragons, I think they just wanted to expand on the number of possibilities of how a Dragon can look. Or did they just want to make different types of Golems?
From what I know, the Dragon Golem is going to be a really powerful creature, because it's counterpart Titan is already a shooter.
Anyway the look would suit a real Forge town

Darktitan, there is a difference between fantasy and myth. The manticore is myth but the dragon golem is fantasy.
Actually, is manticore both?

I think it is possible to have a likeable Dragon Golem in the HOMM series. But I also think it is a very thin line that the Dragon Golem walks to be a usable creature. As I found in my technology thread, I learned that the HOMM series is heavily dependant on a specific set of game characteristics. These requirments dictate that the common gamer fan of this series is in fact not pleased with too much technology in the game. This would then lead the responsibility of the HOMM gaming programmer to ensure that he/she does not cross the line. This thin line can be easily drawn out by actually reading the feedback of the fans. There is a plethora of detailed lines drawn on what the fans want exactly. I thik the Dragon golem represents the line itself. And after having listened and read much of the fan-based feedback I would surmise that the Dragon Golem can only be a successful component of the HOMM series if certain parts of its own mechanical nature were left to the imagination. And I think the imagination would tend to lean toward magical enchantments rather than a complex system of technologically advanced inner workings.
Edit: please check out the alternate dragon thread entitled "Dragon Utopian Alignment" for an excellent source of dragon-related discussions:
