Daily "steroids"
Coffee.
Coke.
Energy drinks.
Even ciggaretes.
We use them to "wake" us in the morning. We use them to get those wheels working. We use them to get some of the frustration in the background.
Some of us directly admit: "We have a dependancy on coffee! We neeeeeeed coffeee!" .
Some of us state: "I can give up whenever I want."
But there are still that hold on: "Hell with coffee. It's the devil's work. Impale the producers."
All that even though studies have shown on the long run, all go bad on our health.( I hope Corribus doesn't see this topic - he will bash me 3 times to the ground )
I don't know if all of these are true, but some hell sure are.... I am experiencing them myself!

As long as I've really started to study and put my brain to work ( meaning 6th grade) i started to drink coffee. By the 12th grade I had blood in coffee, not coffee in blood in my veins . This year i turned to coke.
Energy drinks.. I had a few of those too. I like the taste alot. But can't seem to figure out if they work on me. Must be a placebo effect involved also?
We all heard of the famous Red Bull( I think). But for those of you who don't know it contains Taurine. But don't think someone is milking the bulls .
Some parents are strict when it comes for their children to drink this stuff. But still, they can't stop themselves from drinking it. My parents tried that on me. But just a little at first.
Nowdays children seem to drink more coffee (and alchohol) even more then their parents. And they grow up with this need. Maybe it's my opinion based only on the IT sector, and the others don't suffer this. You go in a lunch break in an IT office and you'll probably see alot of people in their 20's drinking their coffees and having their cigs. If you ask them why do they do it instead of drinking some orange juice mostly they will say :" get me up in the morning". But it's been 4 hours since morning
So...
Do you think coffee and all those derivates are wrong?
If so, you still consume them?
You feel addicted to them?
And the top question...
If your child needs to stay up all night to work on projects, do you let him consume the above?

Definitely wrong!!!!

I did drink tons of Coke for some time, but all that sugar has a tendency of making you fat, so I stopped. I donīt drink any of this right now.
You feel addicted to them?
No.
What combination of the above types of products do you use?
Well, if that counts, I like to drink Mate de Coca (Coke leaves tea), but this is more due to its taste. Ok, ok, it also has a kind of relaxing effect that at the same time makes your mind more concentrated.
And the top question...

Up to a certain age: hell no!!!

That depends on how much you use them. If you like my friend that you have been swallowing coffein pills and washing them down with red bull and coffee, than yes it is wrong. But if you use it occasionally and it works for you than it is not a problem.
I do not use any of them because personally they don't work on me. I tried several times with coffee but it just made me go to sleep.
Addiction --> no
If the kid uses it for his neeeds. This depends on age of the kid b/c they could be detremental to the kid's health. But once again if it works than why not.

Well, this is a good point. People have problems like this. It's sad, really.
Personally, I don't need anything to get me up in the morning. I just drink tea and that's just a habit. I can get by without it. I know, because sometimes there isn't any tea and it doesn't matter. I'm definetely not addicted to it.
Coffee I drink about twice per month and in the middle of the day. No addiction there.
Coke I buy when I have the chance and I'm thirsty or I'd just like something to drink and when I happen to be able to afford any...Basically, I drink it about once a month
I don't use energy drinks. I don't have the need. I'm naturally a very energetic person
But that's just me
Quote: Do you think coffee and all those derivates are wrong?
Not really...As long as it's sensible and there's no addiction... Fine by me
Quote: If your child needs to stay up all night to work on projects, do you let him consume the above?
Depends upon the age, really, but I'm not anyone to speak. I know nothing of parenthood. Still, I'd say the same thing as above, except none for under 12 years old...
Good job, Shai! No religion or politics involved...

I'm an abstainer (Beer tastes like cat piss to me.. :-X), I don't smoke (I hate the smell), and I don't even drink coffee, cuz I dislike its taste. Bah, I'm weird. No, I mean he has to do some hell of a BIG homework or class assigment and it's really impossible to do it without staying up all night.
Actually this what started me into coffeine and coffee based products. Had alot of stuff to do so I had to stay up.
And that evolved into that nice feeling when you drink your coffee in the morning and watch the sun rising. (although that happens quite rare ). Mostly I have to drink my coffee in front of the computer while working on stuff, or on the run in a break at university.
Just curious... I am the only coffeine based working guy around here?
I thought with all that promotion in movies from US showing scenes of people geting on a great talk at a coffee, many people like and are dependent on coffee.
And while we are at it.... Any heavy smokers around here? I live with a "walking fog" ( not you friend of gunnar) that is my brother who smokes 1 pack of cigs a day. And have another brother who also smokes a pack a day.
I smoked back in high-school, but not heavily. Then one day i decided to quit. And now if I have even on full ciggar I'm almost heading for some heavy puking.

caffiene drinks have heaps more in them than coffee. I'm more worried about preteens and young teens who drink these like lolly water than anything else. Excess coffee will kill you, uhuh. So will life. addit: of course I'm not meaning smoking - of course that is gonna kill you - duhr.
Personally I would need to take such a megadose of caffiene for it to help me stay awake that I think it would be damaging to my body ohh yeah.
Anything in moderation is ok.
Stress is a big killer - you should be organising your life so that it isn't making you feel the need to dope up on coffee {isn't that just psychological - do you really get high...} just to study for an exam.
blah blah
man I need to stop procrastinating here

I hate coffee, and cocke as well. And I really don't like chocolate. I have a general problem with cofeine and cocoa.
Regarding the waking up - keeping you going - effect of coffee, if I have something to work on/study/read etc. and I feel sleepy, I will go to bed. I will never work when I am tired just because there is some drink made of some plant that keeps me going.
Feeling sleepy is your body's way of saying you're tired! Go to BED!

You wont keep working because your tired? Even if its 11pm at night, you havent fully completed the most important assignment of the course, or you have a major exam the next day, you would go to bed rather then finish your work? Your body may not agree with your decision to stay up, but sometimes, you dont have a choice. What if its 3am in the morning, your at the hospital because a loved one was in an accident, youd rather sleep then be by their side?
Also there is the issue of going out, im not sure of your age, but i love staying out into the early hours of the morning; because its fun to socialise. Even though my body would rather be in bed asleep, i drink alcohol, caffeine, sugar, watever i need to keep going.
Caffeine is a natural alkaloid; in other words its a natural aphrodisiac which helps your body speed up or lack of a better phrase wake up lol.. There is nothing wrong with drinking coffee to stay awake, drinking soft drink, sugar, watever you can get your hands on. It may not be healthy to repeatedly stay awake, sleep deprevation is even a form of torture! I regularly absorb caffeine into the body, via coffee, caffeine tablets, or even energy drinks. It gets your mind at its fastest, and helps you move on with your day. Sometimes i get up waaay too early because of work or watever, and if i dont drink a coffee or something, il be yawning, lethargic, and tired all day at work. However one coffee, and im energetic and can concentrate for longer periods of time.
Using outside influences to help the body react quicker and improve lifestyle is not a bad thing; rather it should be embraced! I may be wrong but i doubt there has ever been conclusive evidence that proves caffeine and the like to be harmful to the body, unless in extreme doses(im not talking illicit drugs or the like here)
Thanks.

I meant I am against using stimulents to keep yourself awake for work. No, if a loved one would suffer from an accident I would stay by them as long as it takes - but come to think of it, in such an extreme condition the mind will not even let you realize your body may be tired; you will never feel fatigue in such situations - . But yes, if I have to work, or have an exam, and I feel sleepy, I will always go to bed. Work or school are not worth depriving myself of sleep.
As for the going out part, I have had times in my life (and still do) when night is just a short dark period in the day. Meaning that I get almost no sleep when I'm out enjoyng myself.

It sounds like you are a fairly heavy caffiene user {you even take tablets right}.
I really find it hard to believe that one coffee can do this for you. I may be wrong of course, and I'm not calling you a liar, it is just hard to believe. If you are talking about having one in the morning - are you eating at the same time? Because food can have the same benefit (breakfast) of starting your metab.
As for no evidence of caffiene damaging your body, lemmie have a look around. I have it in my head that it attacks the kidneys... can't put my finger on it though.
The whole "it's a natural substance it can't be bad" always makes me laugh. There are plenty of toxins in nature that can kill us .

I agree, let them do as they wish with their bodies. I drink alcohol and caffiene so can't talk - anything in moderation is fine {I don't drink caffiene to get high though...}
Anyway, like I said my main concern is young kids consuming high doses of caffiene in "energy" drinks. I see them everday have these as their only breakfast and it isn't healthy. Not only is it replacing nutrient rich foods with a short lived 'buzz', it raises blood pressure and prevents antistress hormones in the blood so they are wired - a stressful state to be in.
Also, caffiene inhibits iron absorbtion if taken with a meal, causes dehydration through water loss, and increases excretion of calcium and magnesium. Many children ingest insuffiecient amounts of calcium as it is, and we all know its importance for nerve function and bones.
blah blah
but you are right - a breakfast bong is maybe nearly as damaging *shrugs*, at least it gives them the munchies - just need to pack some healthy snacks to send along with it huh.
joking 'course.
whatever, I'm avoiding housework..........
