Making the heroes series better
I personally think some changes need to be made with any new heroes game coming out. I love the heroes series but their is something that could be better. For example a great way to add some interesting new things would be making the option to spectialize towns. IM talking about where each town would have a focus say, rangers, spells, melee units, economy (resources) etc. I hate how when completed, all town of a faction look the same. I also would like to be able to exchange the recruitment growth of the unit based on the towns spec. Like instead of having 100 peasants if your towns spec. is archery, you can exchange them for archers or marksmen. Im not talking about using the training grounds, i just think it should be like this. If your spec is rangers and you have a town based on ranging and you have a barracks and a archers tower u should be able to channel the pop growth from the barracks to the archers tower. Say 10 footmen for 13 or 14 archers. Something like this is needed to make homm more interesting.

Yea the towns more or less follow a similar building plan which can get really repetitive...

Not that similar, depending on the type of map you may prefer to get a blacksmith for warmachines early, upgrade something instead of building more dwellings, sacrifice dwellings for mage guild etc. The early building can change and effectively as well.
As for the units I don't really mind especially now that we will have alternate upgrades. However your idea has merits Being able to specialize on a specific part of the army, maybe research on magic or become more effective on its economy could make it more interesting. Instead on the now random town specializations we could instead make a choice with more interesting options instead of getting a wood bonues etc.

Your ideas are very intresting, but I think the alternative upgrades will give the variety you are looking for.
I just can't imagine magical Inferno town, or offensive Academy town.
Every town has its own properties. Some use ranged attacks as a main weapon (like Sylvan) and some use melee attacks (like Inferno). It would be too weird to have everything mixed.
