Begging for mercy....
Wow I am full of ideas tonight, lol! Guess I'll spam this whole place to hell with my ranting and raving (must be the absence of coffee lol!).
Attacking a wandering monster stack currently involves a quick message with the monsters either fleeing or fighting until the death. Few people allow a fleeing enemy to get away, because the logic goes that if they're weaker than you, then they'll be easy kills and therefore, worth the experience....
So same old fight to the death stuff right?
What if in HoMM4 they introduced a new mercy feature for wandering creatures? That engaging them in battle only lasts up until a certain point before the creatures understand the hopelessness of their plight and instead of fighting on (and inevitably, dying!) they choose to beg for mercy instead?
So what does begging for mercy involve? Well for one thing, they can bribe their way out of death, much like an opponent does when they wish to surrender. Or they (what's left of them) can offer to join your army.
Few things are so suicidal that they'd fight you right to the death. Everything values it's life to some degree, so it's unrealistic to expect the last ten pikemen to fight your angels to the death. So at some point, they surrender and ask for your mercy or try and bribe their way out of dying...
WHat's more is that if these 'wanderers' offer to surrender and join your army, they are NOT put under the influence of your hero. They fight under automatic guidance (much like mercenary troops) and attack who they please, if anyone at all. Of course this individualism may only last a few days at most before they become fully integrated into your armies as real joiners. Up until that point, however, they are not able to be combined with original hero army stacks because they are outsiders and not yet considered trustworthy...
Even more interesting is the idea that perhaps these mercy-granted creatures can (before they integrate into your Hero army proper) decide during a battle to rebel and attack your OWN army whilst fighting. WHat would you do with a stack of creatures that halfway into a battle, decide that they no longer owed any fealty to you and turned...

That would be very interesting - reminds me of Master of Orion, where you can take over colonies, but the colonists can rebel before they're integrated into your empire and revert to their old allegiance.

There's been some similar suggestions a while ago. What I would want is an option for the creatures to pay for safe passage. You mention surrendering, although it's pretty much the same thing. One of them happens before combat while the other is an in-combat option.
The reason for adding it lies along the lines that a Good aligned player cannot really afford to pass up the XP the monsters will give if you defeat them. Therefore, you always select to fight when they try to flee from you.
This doesn't make sense if you lead an army of haven troops and the fleeing monster is aligned to haven.
I'd want an option when monsters are begnning to disperse and flee between:
* Offer the monsters safe passage for a fee.
* Massacre them.
The surrender option during combat is pretty much the same thing.

Heroes has always been more of strategy game instead of RP game. So in general players will do what benefits them most.
What about if some creatures aren`t hostile at all? And would just let you pass through of adjacent hexes. Or even the hex where they are at the moment. But won`t disappear from map. They wouldn`t want to fight with you and wouldn`t join you and they wouldn`t even be guarding anything. (I`m sure this have been discussed already, but one must do what one can do to improve the idea ).
And what about creatures escaping from the battlefield?
They would take some losses in escaping but might succeed in attempt. And the rest of the creatures would appear in the map far away from your hero (let`s say 10 hexes) or they are hiding in woods couple turns and then come back to haunt you. But if you encounter them in battle second time their morale will be lower and they will escape more likely.
One more thing is that certain troops would join some players and fight some. Like Angels would join Haven hero but fight Necropolis. Maybe it could be made so that they attack even Haven player`s Necromancer.
