Nativity and Map Passability
Here goes another silly idea for HOMM4, lol!
There are so many map blockages in Homm3 that I lament the ability not to be able to move armies into mountain ranges and forests and through hills and stuff. Volcanic lava flows and all sorts of things impede upon logistical progress and serve to be nothing more than bricks on the screen (they may as well be!).
So what would it take (apart from FLYING) to be able to move through a forest? Would it take a certain racial hero to be able to do such a thing? What if it were possible with certain hero types?
I think this may have been discussed before a long long time ago (I'm not even sure it was here), but imagine the possibility of being able to move heroes INTO previously forbidden terrain. They can be hidden from view to all except you and their 'colour pixel' on the world view map could be invisible. The only thing which would give these terrain specialist heroes away would be their colour flag on the adventure map (which you'd have to look for pretty hard). Having a partially hidden hero moving through terrain that the opponent regards as impassable would add a whole new element to strategy and scouting and the map as a whole. No longer would the bricks that look like trees be impassable and no longer would there be such an outcry over a spell like fly being banned in maps.
Of course for such 'native hero' ability, your armies would suffer a huge loss of movement (imagine the time it would take to move through dense forests or across snow capped mountain ranges!) but potentially the risk of coming across 'native terrain' creatures that are not found anywhere else on the map. Add to this the potential loss of morale at the logistical nightmare of moving through super harsh terrain and you come to the conclusion that a feature like this is not benefit-only. It has some equally weighty drawbacks that counter the benefits of stealth movement, which makes it somewhat of a balance...

Not a bad idea. I suppose pathfinding could come into the equation. Perhaps if your party is all dwarves you could climb the mountains or something (though that isn't exactly practical). You can already do this with dimension door, a very powerful spell in H2. Once an enemy warlock has it, be prepared for them to move from half the map into your territory and conquer some unguarded mines and towns.. Scary stuff.
But seriously, if you took away the effects of mountains and other barriers, there wouldn't really be any point in having them in the first place. It may as well be obstacle free. The barriers lend some strategy to the game as you can't just simply sneak over a mountain range and take over your neighbor's land. You would have to go the long way through a horde of Titans and Bone Dragons or something. There's tactical reasons why they are there.
